The Final Mission

Part 1

Ulti's Notes:

My original plan for Darkness Rising (once it became Darkness Rising) was to have one, big, mega-segment to conclude the comic. Right near where I ended Darkness Rising, I decided a more fitting organization would split the events up into separate segments, so now I had a new segment for the final battle. And now that I had that, well, of course I had to call back to what started it all. So the segment title AND opening scenes are direct callbacks to The First Mission from almost 7 years prior.

Maybe Kaxo just read the chapter title.

Kaxo's currently the "I got a bad feeling about this" guy from literally everything.

Part 2

Ulti's Notes:

One of the awkward things about Darkness Rising, and a lot of my important plans that had to be wrapped up, was that surprisingly enough, most of them hardly involved the core cast at all. I'm honestly not entirely sure WHY the main cast didn't really have much involvement in any of my plans, but that was likely because a lot of the plans were developed with the expectation of the Division A members encountering, discovering, and/or reacting to them.

Once I had to condense things and trim the fat in order to put it all into Darkness Rising, I no longer really had room for the core cast, though, so it took until now for these guys to even really show up and matter again, lol

But not telling the hero is a video game standard. After all, nobody bothered to tell Kirby that his strawberry shortcake WASN'T in that chest. Or that DeDeDe didn't actually do something. Or that he did and was doing it for the right reasons, for a cahnge.

Warpstar
11/04/16
Kirby's not the main chacter. Kaxo is. He's the first one who showed up. Or Raize.

What do you mean he's the leader?

Warpstar

Jarkes: Where was that? I never saw anything like that. The blame thing.

Ultizeta
11/13/16
Jarkes: Warpstar: It was mainly discussed privately than publicly, but the gist of it is that Gigi wasn't happy with the reveal of Not-Kaxo at the end of Such an Odd Eight, as she didn't like that she was using a fake Kaxo during the crossover and felt a bit insulted that I viewed the way she wrote Kaxo as so out-of-character that I turned him into a different character. There was a large debate between us as far as why I said Kaxo was extremely out-of-character in trying to murder Raven with the help of Larry. Gigi disagreed, pointing out scenes such as when Kaxo killed Mirror Kirby's pet during the first KDA crossover.

In the end, both of us should've handled things better. I should've let Gigi in on the real natures of all the characters rather than letting her rely just on the contents of the pages when some of the characterization still had yet to be revealed for the characters she was using, and then when she misdirected Kaxo's violent nature into apathetic sociopathy, I should've messaged her and tried to let her fix the issue herself rather than subverting her writing immediately after I got the character back. On her end, though, she was very adamant that she had written the character well, and wasn't happy with how I was reacting, especially since I also misused some of her characters too, the most notable of which being Grace/Daisy during the puppy-dog eyes scene that I ended up rewriting to try and better fit it into Gigi's characterization. That isn't to say she didn't accept any blame, though she was reluctant to admit it for a while if I recall correctly. Considering that was four years ago, though, I may not be.

The thing to take away from this though is that both Gigi and I did come away from that as better writers and people, and if nothing else, I was able to take a lot more care for both sides during the next crossover. I learned my lesson from the issues Gigi and I had, so I made sure to talk quite often with BSX about my plans and gave him a giant character sheet full of both on-screen and off-screen information about the characters he was using. I can't speak for Gigi personally if she learned lessons from that crossover (probably the lesson was "don't do crossovers") but I'm assuming she did too.

Part 3

Ulti's Notes:

One of the last major things I had to wrap up before the actual fight was the issue of the whole "Caiya was hit with a resentment beam" just a few segments prior. While it certainly didn't last as long as it was intended to, I still wanted to showcase it achieving something close to its intended purpose of trying to sow discourse within the Squad. So Caiya is unwilling to hear Kirby out or trust him due to the feelings she doesn't realize she's been forced to have, and this leads to multiple group arguments.

Original Author's Comment:

11/14/16
Looks like Miracle Matter's plan of weakening the bonds between the Squad members is working.

Oh, hi Hologram Keito.

Warpstar
12/23/16
Oh hey, happy belated birthday Ulti!

Part 5

Ulti's Notes:

It wouldn't have felt right to have a final sort of segment like this without Keito's involvement, despite his death. That, plus how I wasn't quite sure how to resolve the Caiya feelings issue, gave me fuel for using a magically-created projection of Keito to (once again) kill two birds with one stone.

I chose to have the Keito projection be less of a return of actual Keito, though, and more of a response to their comments at his funeral earlier. He's not the Keito they had, but the one they needed to hear from.

Original Author's Comment:

12/30/16
Stress, depression, and motivation issues worked in tandem to delay this page. Luckily, I had at least already announced a brief hiatus beforehand due to Thanksgiving break, it just ended up being several weeks longer than initially anticipated.

Dark Matter should just have him come back to visit every once in a while.

EDIT: TheJGamer:

You can edit your comments, you don't have to keep making new ones.

But I don't think it would be novel to do that, since I can't explain stories that good and it's better to read, since it tells more than I could.

Had to throw in one more sad scene before the new year didn't you Ulti?

Elemental Kirby
12/31/16
TheJGamer: Man, this is going to be hard, especially without revealing too much. TheJGamer, prepare yourself for a short explanation of the story.
*Gasp*
Kirby Adventure is as said at the description, " a group of Kirbies who take requests from random clients and attempt to complete them! And mostly fail miserably!"- Ultizeta. So this group of Kirbies are part of an organization that is supposed to assist and protect the beings of dreamland. From the cast section you can see that there are 4 divisions with other members. The main characters are assembled as Division A, they mostly complete the tasks sent to them and do this throughout most of the comic which includes battling villains and stopping troublemakers.

Now to better the explanation , I would need to reveal a slight more just for you to get a feel of it. Reply back if you're okay with a little spoilers (At least 1).

Nashew
12/31/16
I'm not crying you're crying.

CapedLuigisYoshi
12/31/16
That actually went a lot better than I was expecting.

...But in hindsight, it actually makes more sense - the group really needed a push like this to help dealing with Keito's death, since there's not enough time left in the comic for them to develop past it naturally.

Ultizeta: Well most people like to read most recent versions of comics, I did that the first time I read your comic, and it got me intrigued to start from the start but I only read one of the recent at the time so I don't know why TheJGamer is doing it but I guess, allow him.

guestuser

Part 7

Ulti's Notes:

Dark Matter's comments are a bit meta, in that they reference the idea of the redshirt trope. The more familiar an audience is with a character, the less likely they are to die, so it goes. Thus, nameless extras would feel like they're always on the chopping block. Viewing the comic from a story perspective (which Dark Matter is... ambiguously crazy enough to do so), Division B's relative unknown-ness would make them hardly any better than nameless extras. Think of it like how quickly I was willing to just exterminate most of the members of HAND.

Original Author's Comment:

Light and Shadow
01/04/17
Hypothetical scenario: Dark Matter vs. Miracle Matter. Who would win?

Elemental Kirby
01/04/17
Light and Shadow: Miracle Matter takes the win for power due to his ability to change power and element at will.
Dark Matter takes the win in health and durability, due to him taking a lot more hits than Miracle Matter.
But, Miracle Matter is supposed to be like a upgraded version of Dark Matter, and controls them so he has a win there.
Although Dark Matter has the most experience, and has great speed so he gets two points there.
Dark Matter would win.

I've had a lot of fun reading this 660-page comic! Now I'm 100% less confused! Hooray!

Thanks for making such an awesome comic, Ulti!

Waddle DeeDoo: That's Ninja.

EDIT: Wait a second. It's actually Stone!

Part 11

Ulti's Notes:

Kirby 64 had a gimmick where it had a small selection of copy abilities, but they could be combined together to make a wide variety of combo abilities. It's not traditional Kirby style, like a game like Kirby Super Star Ultra is.

As a result, I came up with a couple of new forms for Miracle Matter to take on, to fit the new environment he was in (and also give him vulnerabilities to some of the Kirby characters in the comic who had showcased abilities). Thus, this is a brand-new form for Miracle Matter that's meant to represent Fighter, as a large fist colored like a boxing glove. (It's actually just a recolored sprite of Master Hand, the Super Smash Bros. boss that also appeared in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror)

Original Author's Comment:

That's a new form for Miracle Matter to be taking. I wonder which ability it represents?

This is why Parasol is the best ability.

BattleStarX: Can you actually do that in the game?

CapedLuigisYoshi
01/31/17
Oh no, it's the dreaded Hand ability!

Clearly this was the true purpose of Zykan's excursion - obviously HAND was the only force that can stop Miracle Matter's Hand form, but now they're mostly dead.

a red clenched fist! i think i got it, guys.
it's the knuckles ability.

KirbyFighterDeluxe
01/31/17
It's that weird Throw ability from way back when.

Light and Shadow
01/31/17
Judging by how Miracle Matter is from Kirby 64 and this form is red I'd suggest something from the Fire Mix line. I'm leaning towards the Super Fireball or Flaming Arrow ability.

KirbyFighterDeluxe: Do you mean Backdrop?

BattleStarX
01/31/17
TheJGamer: If you're walking along, yes, the parasol will protect you from falling objects, like coconuts or enemies. And in some games, there is a parasol toss where you bounce an enemy on top of your parasol and then chuck them.

So this is completely within the bounds of the parasol power.

Nova Ozuka

Next thing you know, Talzo is going to show up and attack Miracle Matter.

There are two new pieces of fan art that I forgot to put up on the page until today, so go check out TheJGamer and BestBuilder101's work that's been added!

Something else that may be of interest to you guys is an art thing that I was working on for a week or so.
Introducing: the KAS Project!
For a while now, I haven't really been that happy with the whole "all of these characters I've created are tied to an IP that doesn't belong to me and most are just boring recolors of pre-existing characters and designs," so as a what-if scenario, I decided to redesign the 10 main characters of Kirby Adventure in a theoretical non-Kirby reboot of the comic. Now, that's not a thing that is actually happening, but it was still fun to try and actually reflect the characters' personalities in their designs for once and not have them all look the same with just a palette difference.

Smack Jeeves Comments Section:

Part 15

Ulti's Notes:

Green Greens has always been the traditional Kirby first-stage archetype (especially helped by the fact that it quite literally IS the first stage in any Kirby game). Kirby Super Star brought back Green Greens in the Spring Breeze subgame that mimicked the original Kirby's Dream Land and its levels, essentially remaking the game in the Super Star gameplay engine.

When Kirby Super Star got remade into Super Star Ultra, it added new subgames, one of which was Revenge of the King. RotK remixed Spring Breeze, making harder and "darker" versions of every stage/boss/etc. Purple Plants is, subsequently, the "darker" version of Green Greens found in RotK. Considering how often I had used Green Greens before, utilizing Purple Plants for the final battle felt a little bit more fitting.

Original Author's Comment:

04/10/17
At this point... I'm honestly not sure how to continue writing this final battle. I'm considering cutting it down compared to what I was originally thinking, mainly because of my continued-dwindling interest in working with sprites, and the sheer difficulty in conveying proper action sequences in sprite comic format anyway. What would you guys think if this battle against Miracle Matter doesn't last for too many more pages?

Smack Jeeves Comments Section:

Djoing
04/10/17
Maybe a montage?

TheJGamer
04/10/17
A Flash animation? Or maybe a series of hand-drawn panels?

littlekirby61524
04/11/17
I'm fine with you shortening this battle, considering how MM is, it'd be pretty repetitive with how things would go.

Redkirby
04/11/17
If you're uninterested in working with sprites, then you could maybe shift the comic's artstyle to something you're more comfortable with, like hand drawn art.

If you're worried about the final battle becoming boring or repetitive or something like that, then you could try making it more interesting, by maybe have Kirby's battle with Miracle Matter get entangled with Zykan and Meta Knight's duel. Or bring in some side characters, perhaps you have some of the past foes the KAS fought come in. And hey, I don't think we've seen Whirr this entire segment. What's HE doing?

In terms of shortening the fight, I really don't care, so long as the payoff is good. I hope it's not going to be like the end of the first DBZ Broly movie, where after tons of buildup, the villain is defeated in a really anti-climatic way.

Redkirby
04/11/17
Also, (I made this a separate comment because it isn't really related to my previous one) Kirby Adventure is currently on the verge of overtaking Bob and George as second longest sprite comic, to my knowledge. (Bob and George used to be the longest sprite comic, lasting over seven years, until recently Kirby's Dream Adventure beat it out). Granted, this comic has mostly lasted as long as it has due to delays, but it still is impressive that its stayed active on here for as long as it has.

KirbyFighterDeluxe
04/11/17
I feel like at this point advancing the plot would be a higher priority over well-built action scenes.

Warpstar
04/12/17
I don't know, maybe it would help if they wouldn't talk too much. Also, you might try putting in some elements like the warpstars. If not that, then add Miracle Matter's little pawns.

If you make it shorter, like a montage, it might not seem as good since there's a lot of other fights longer, like Talzo's escape, Master Green, and the meeting with the KAS and Miracle Matter's ... pawns.

Be creative, you know, like when characters from media think outside the box.

If you can, make the atmosphere more breath-taking. Unless it's too much.

Thenewdonut
04/12/17
TheJGamer: Or maybe have plasma dude charge up a huge laser and destroy the world as we know it?

Yeah I went a little to far there

Thenewdonut

guestuser
04/12/17
Maybe you could make it a little shorter and then add a montage at the end just so it's not as short, as just doing a regular montage

Hello Ultizeta, chat. It has been awhile, haven't been around since Division Addition ended. Glad to see you're still going strong forwards after all these years and decided to not abruptly kill off the comic. Your hard work and creativity (as well as BSX's and Gigi's) have inspired me on multiple occasions and I look forward to the conclusion, however it may turn out. Don't wear yourself out. Cheers. - FrostyYoshi

Part 16

Ulti's Notes:

Miracle Matter gained a Parasol-themed form here, which was based on the Drifter enemy from Kirby's Dream Land 2 that also granted the Parasol ability. It's basically just a small parasol with an eye on it, so for Miracle Matter's version, I enlarged it. Perhaps not the most creative form, but I mean hey, the canon form for Miracle Matter's Stone form is just a giant rock, too, so...

Original Author's Comment:

04/14/17
And thus, on that day, Ultizeta signed a new memetic law: Similar to how all Yellow Kirbies must eventually be murdered, all Purple Kirbies must secretly be ninjas.

Kaxo finally gets his long-awaited revenge. It must be so fulfilling.

I modeled Miracle Matter's Parasol form after the Drifter enemies of Kirby's Dream Land 2.

I think that's about all I have to say on this page.

Part 17

Ulti's Notes:

I really didn't have much to do with Whirr, so I elected to use Whirr to showcase one last bit of Zykan's cruelty. While Whirr wasn't exactly a passionate member of the group of villains, he was pretty efficient and didn't hesitate or question most of his orders. He was just uninterested in things.

Arguably, that should've made him the ideal minion for Zykan, a member of the group who doesn't question him, and isn't bad at his job, but the instant he's less-than-ideal (in that he's injured and needs assistance), Zykan sees him only as a liability. Zykan has no true loyalty to anything aside from himself, and in a sense that's his biggest downfall.

Speaking of Zykan, this was one of the biggest hints as to his true nature that I enjoyed playing quite coy about. Some people were unable to piece it together, or believed that because I never explicitly stated it in-comic that it wasn't true, so I'll leave you to ponder (or just read some other comments that figure it out lol), and I can and will be explicit when it comes down to it in the epilogue.

Also, Galacta Knight's eyes are actually a bit pinkish. Zykan's was a bit on the darker side.

Part 18

Ulti's Notes:

In Kirby 64, when you damage Miracle Matter and then it reverts back to its dice-looking form, some of its red eyes are blacked out. In a sense, it's representative of how much more damage you need to deal to the boss. So here, when briefly back in his default state, Miracle Matter is also missing some of his eyes due to the damage he's been dealt.

Part 19

Ulti's Notes:

One of the awkward things about the final fight here is that, due to retaining the nature of only allowing one ability at a time to attack Miracle Matter, it didn't translate very well to a comic compared to being a video game mechanic. The best way the format was able to function was, as you can see here, a montage.

While I do kinda wish I had picked out a better way to do a final showdown, I also don't quite mind that things got a little bit more comedic-oriented. While things got pretty dark for a while in the comic, due to the villains and all the deaths and whatnot, at the end of the day, Kirby Adventure still began its life as a comedy comic. And it never truly abandoned that, either, I liked being humorous.

So, in the end, it was still somewhat fitting that, despite all the dark themes and danger, things evened out in the end and were able to be gripping but also amusing. Maybe the tone didn't jive with everybody, I can accept that, it's FAR from perfect, but I think it's ultimately not too bad, really.

Also the Mirror form for Miracle Matter is also new, and was made simply to give Gigi a moment to help out.

Welp.

Come on, Miracle. Surely you've got forms that don't correspond directly to abilities the KAS already has. Like, try Jet? Or Stone again? Or Beam, since Keito's dead? I'd suggest Yo-yo but that'd probably prompt the GIMs to turn against you.

TheJGamer

CapedLuigisYoshi: Not sure if Stone's the best choice. Parasol's a hard counter for Stone, as we saw in Part 11.

Part 20

Ulti's Notes:

Miracle Matter and Dark Matter knowing each other is technically canon, if you view it in the sense of Miracle Matter being a commander of lesser Dark Matter beings in Kirby 64. The Dark Matters found in Kirby 64 are much simpler beings than the one in Kirby's Dream Land 2, though, which is who Kirby Adventure's Dark Matter is supposed to be. He's like the Bandana Waddle Dee of Waddle Dees, in a sense.

Miracle Matter calls Dark Matter the 'traitor swordsman' because the KDL2 Dark Matter has a swordsman form it takes (with this flying eyeball being its true form), and after the KA events gave it feelings, that made it traitorous to the Dark Matters under Miracle Matter/Zero's command.

Part 21

Ulti's Notes:

The "floppier hat" version of Sword here is the Ultra Sword ability, a Super Ability first seen in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Since in this comic's timeline, that game has yet to happen, this would be the first instance of this Kirby encountering the ability.

This idea, similar to that seen in other games and media, where the side characters and people who were helped all along the way during the adventure all come together to throw in emotional support for the main characters, was one that I had had since nearly the very conception of the MSG/Miracle Matter and all the main plot stuff. It's a really fun idea that allows people to remember everything that came beforehand, and holds nostalgic weight especially for something that takes 7 years to reach.

As an anniversary idea, it was practically perfect that it was already what I wanted to do anyway. The last time I celebrated the anniversary date of the comic while the comic was actively going was marked by this extra long comic featuring characters and references to nearly every single segment I could cram into it, including both crossovers (and both SIDES of each crossover to boot). It was fun and well-received, and I'm very proud of it.

Original Author's Comment:

05/02/17
If you find this development a bit silly, just remember that canonically, Kirby has previously beaten sentient shadow abominations of pure evil with a weapon formed from the happiness of 30 random Pop Star residents.

Happy 7th anniversary to Kirby Adventure, by the way. My how time flies.

For those wondering, I got permission to use both BattleStarX's and Gigi19972010's characters from Kirby's Dream Adventure and 20 Times Kirby respectively. Gigi wrote her characters' dialogue herself, while I wrote BSX's characters. I also made the panels myself, I just took extra care this time to make it in both authors' respective styles as best I could.

Part 22

Ulti's Notes:

Something that I recognized as being very clear, and that's fairly funny in the grand scheme of things, is how Miracle Matter really couldn't be the final foe the characters take down. He had an intimidating factor and presence, to be sure, there was no doubt about that. But especially due to being hidden in the shadows for most of the comic, Miracle Matter lacked that personal connection to readers, in a sense.

More importantly, he lacked the personal connection that Zykan had formed by murdering a main character and, like, a third of the side cast by this point. People wanted to see Zykan get defeated eagerly, so I knew that it was Zykan who had to be the true final boss, in a sense.

Part 23

Ulti's Notes:

Pay attention to the little sparks on Kiina and Yiel, they're important.

Raize's quip about the Soul's Revenge DX thing is a trend in more recent Kirby games, where final bosses have unexpected additional forms that they take on, especially in postgame bonus fights of dubious canonicity. They often get called things like "Marx Soul", "Dark Meta Knight's Revenge", et cetera. So it's me poking fun at Kirby trends.

OH NO IT'S ZYKAN

TheJGamer
05/16/17
Wait a second. I've got a theory.

So according to the "Cast" page, Kiina is in Talzo's gang, which Zykan is also a member of. NAVO is also in his gang.

However, Talzo betrayed evil by Shoryuken-ing Miracle Matter, which would essentially mean that the gang is dissolved, since Talzo is evil, which would mean that the gang works for MM. But Talzo's betrayal would essentially break the gang's motive.

Kiina was "fixed" by Zykan and all the evil ones. However, here she is, with the Kirbies when she was in Zykan's posse in Part 17. So Kiina must've betrayed the gang too.

NAVO is fighting against MM, which would also prove that HE'S also not part of Talzo's gang anymore.

That means that Zykan's the only one left. That could be why he's going on this killing rampage, going as far as letting Whirr die with a puncture and a horrible pun.

Zykan is the true villain. He's a cold-hearted Sir Kibble that is getting revenge on Talzo for essentially breaking up the gang.

Kirby's still got a big fight ahead of him. This comic isn't over just yet.

@Guest: Oh yeah, Zykan's gonna want those as well as the lives of the Kirbies.

Part 25

Ulti's Notes:

Something that I found funny at the time was how I accidentally made a perfect scenario between these two characters. Shadik always had shadowy powers, like his Shadow Jump teleportation, and then meanwhile, completely unrelated, I created Zykan and had him call himself a Knight of Shadows, and then in Darkness Rising gave him a Shadow Orb. A confrontation between the two was truly inevitable, even if I didn't realize it until, like, 5 pages prior to this one.

In addition, if you reread the page introducing the orbs in Jetting Across the Ice, you'd see that your orb count is inaccurate. Not that it really matters anyway considering the comic is going to be ending in approximately 25 more pages.

guestuser

Going to guess that Zykan is someone we know. Someone we've seen before in this comic, and the only one fitting to be the real final boss.

Part 26

Ulti's Notes:

Shadik didn't have an ability, so he wasn't really able to do much against Miracle Matter aside from transporting Gigi to the fight. This gave Shadik a moment to shine, especially fitting considering he's always been depicted as extra powerful and threatening.

Shadik speaking for the first time was something always planned. I restrained as much as I could for years, aside from the early blips where Shadik's thoughts were seen or broadcasted by Shat'l. Ideally, I would never have done those moments just to add extra weight to this moment here, but in the end, an appropriate amount of anticipation and build-up was found for this scene, even if surprisingly less people reacted to it than I expected.

It was, in a sense, my sort of "take that" sort of deal, because Shadik was my answer to BattleStarX's Karby, the gray silent Kirby seen in the KDA crossovers. And Karby had a line very early on in KDA's early pages, which disappointed me to see, because I felt like having a silent character speak was always made better when given both a lot of focus on them not speaking, and also waiting a REALLY long time for it to finally happen.

It was also a response to the character of Longshot from Avatar: The Last Airbender, a minor character who also is silent in his first appearance, and then only speaks up in his second right after another character is killed. As a kid, I never even realized the significance of Longshot speaking up, because he was such a minor character. Basically, Shadik's silence was entirely done out of spite, wanting to fulfill my own goals of seeing such a character archetype done "correctly". And then I didn't even do it ideally, because I was 13 when I started trying to write him, lmao.

I debated about going down this route in this condensed ending for a while, but ultimately determined it was more in canon Kirby's nature to do this anyway. Eldritch abominations? Just a friend in need of a good hug. Who cares if they tried to plunge Pop Star into eternal darkness in the past, so long as Kirby can have a picnic with them in the future?

Part 30

Ulti's Notes:

Defeating any boss in a Kirby game will almost always result in a little victory dance from Kirby and any friends he has with him at the time. Despite how dubiously I tended to follow actual Kirby canon, this was still meant to be a Kirby comic, so I couldn't resist following the tradition here. Plus, it made for a great wrap-up and segue into the epilogue. They'll get their rest, they earned it. And for now, they dance.

It's Kirby tradition.

Speaking of tradition, it's the end of the segment. Time for the end-of-segment write-up. There's not nearly as much to talk about as there was with Darkness Rising, but I still had some points to cover.

Calling Back

The biggest theme for me with The Final Mission was making it feel like an appropriate climax to the seven-year long running comic. There’s been a lot of history, good and bad, to go off of and give a definitive conclusion. A lot was riding on this segment’s success, basically, and part of my method for making it feel like a really good conclusion was by using a lot of bookends and call-backs.

This is first seen in the very first two pages, in fact, where I utilize Kaxo and Raize to basically recreate the first page of The First Mission in a new context. Kaxo is late, Raize calls him out, Saia is waiting for both of them, they arrive and Kirby starts an in-depth explanation, and then Kirby asks if they have questions. The biggest difference, ironically, is that this time, Vezo is actually allowed to ask his question.

There were other scattered callback sections as well, ranging from simple mentions such as when Kaxo talks about how nobody noticed when he got replaced during the large argument page, the return of the “No Jelly” battle cry, Saia calling back to Kibby’s “I’m a ninja” line, the return of Bwarr, Whirr’s puns coming back, etc.

This all eventually culminated in the sequence that defeated Miracle Matter, but I’ll get to that in a moment. First…

Resentment and Projections

I still had a few loose ends to tie up during The Final Mission that I didn’t get around to in Darkness Rising. One of these was the looming “Caiya got hit with that resentment beam in Infiltration” plot thread. I needed to address that sooner or later, so I felt doing it before the battle was going to be important.

I’ve mentioned how I cut out a lot of content from Kirby Adventure and reworked the conclusion to fit the new, faster timeframe. What I haven’t mentioned is that a lot of the same plot ideas that happened in this conclusion were always meant to be in the comic, just a bit differently handled. One of these was the pep talk before Miracle Matter attacked the base.

Originally, Kirby was going to have wanted to face the villain all on his own so as to not endanger the rest of the Squad members, but they would have talked him out of it. I changed that because there’s really no logical reason for that to happen in any version of KA that I’d be writing. Kirby made the Squad to fight bad guys and help people, so why would he suddenly not want them around? They CAN handle themselves and he’s seen that, so it never really made much sense, so instead I focused on something else entirely.

I turned Kirby’s wanting-to-go-it-alone into a widespread group argument, basically. Because of Darkness Rising’s plot structure, I wasn’t able to utilize a whole lot of the main cast members for a lot of it. I needed to address the loss of Keito and how it was actually affecting the group, and that’s what developed the argument idea. They’re all still grieving in their own way, and it led to a large degree of negativity. Thankfully, I had Dark Matter lend the characters a hand as well.

The Keito projection served the main goal of getting the characters to work together again and lower those grieving tensions, but also to help address Caiya’s lingering resentment effects. It was a bit of an anticlimactic way to resolve that issue, admittedly, but it’s still better than leaving it untouched or fixing it off-camera. At least now, we see that Keito’s projection defeats the resentment basically by urging Caiya to think logically, something she normally tries to do anyway.

The only other interesting thing I’ll say about Keito’s projection is that I tried to establish that it wasn’t really actually Keito in any large sense. He’s instead the idealized version of Keito from all the Squad members’ memories. What this means is that when writing the projection, I wasn’t thinking of it as Keito, but instead as basically someone who would say everything that the Squad members really needed to hear. If you compare the projection page to the funeral page for Keito at the end of Infiltration, you’ll notice that almost all of the projection’s comments to the Squad members are in response to what they say at Keito’s memorial and grave.

Ability Swap Battle

The tricky thing about writing for the final battle against Miracle Matter was dealing with the mechanics of the original Kirby 64 fight. Having to swap between different forms that can only be damaged by the same ability was initially exciting to me, since it meant to me that I would be able to give every KAS member their own moment in the spotlight.

The problem ended up becoming how simultaneously slow and fast-paced that felt. The individual moments just became “character beats up Miracle Matter for a few panels” but it was hard to maintain a decent pace with that. Eventually it just resulted in the semi-montage that we got in the final comic.

It was especially tricky to maintain Miracle Matter’s ominous characterization that he had when he was hidden in the shadows as the Mysterious Shadow Guy. When he was finally out in the open here, he was ultimately rather outclassed, and it made him feel paler in comparison. Even when he starts acting serious and dark again, it just quickly backfires on him. Eventually, I just accepted that aspect, for a very specific reason:

Kirby Adventure has never been THAT serious of a story. There are serious moments, for sure, but there’s always a strong degree of lightheartedness and humor to be found as well. It’s still a KIRBY comic, after all. Thus, I simply embraced having a more involved comedic final boss rather than solely a serious final battle. It fit better with the tone of the entire comic ending things with a mixture of seriousness and humor rather than focusing on one versus the other.

Back for the Finale

Ever since the beginning of the comic, I’ve had a general idea for the final battle segment. Even with the “03” idea for MSG, the final battle had similar ideas to what I ended up going with.

Originally, with the custom 03 character, he was going to reach into Kirby’s memories and create shadowy versions of all of Kirby’s biggest foes, aka basically all the old final bosses of each game, as well as a few other notable villains like Galacta Knight and Dyna Blade.

With so many different characters to fight against, Shat’l’s original psychic message was going to be asking for more direct help. Thus, characters would actually physically make their way to Green Greens to help defeat some of the shadow villains. Obviously, this didn’t exactly get retained, but I always liked the idea of after an entire comic of the Squad helping others, now in this final fight everyone else helps the Squad. It was a nice bit of closure.

Many of you noticed a parallel to certain other video games in that particular sequence. My response to that is: obviously. It’s not exactly an obscure trope, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and EarthBound are just two particularly noteworthy instances that are easy to take inspiration from. It’s not a rip-off when it’s an idea that isn’t solely from those particular video games.

Knight of Shadows

Arguably one of the most memorable characters in the entire comic now is Zykan, mainly due to how his character evolved in Infiltration. The interesting thing about him is how much the character actually changed between his appearances, especially with ideas that got cut out of the story.

In Jetting Across the Ice, none of Talzo’s group was really that fleshed out. Kiina was more confrontational, Zykan wasn’t very antagonistic or ruthless, and NAVO was incoherent and repetitive. Before they all returned in full force in Infiltration, their characterizations went through some modifications in my head for a good long while.

Zykan originally had a rather dark, yet rather unfitting, story behind him. The idea of him actually being an undead knight came from two specific ideas that combined into one: he refers to himself as a Knight of Shadows in JAtI, and… back in the earlier years of the comic, I had a passing idea of a side comic to Kirby Adventure that would be a crossover between KA and Doctor Who of all things, with Caiya traveling alongside the Doctor transformed into a Kirby.

Essentially, in Season 4 of the revived Doctor Who TV show, there’s an alien monster called the Vashta Nerada that are tiny, carnivorous creatures that live in shadows. In their episode, they eat a bunch of people and take control of their corpses by moving their spacesuits.

The idea that I had was that in one “Caiya travels in time with the Doctor” adventure, they would go into the past and run into Zykan himself, except he’d be a completely different person. Eventually in this adventure, Zykan would be killed by the Vashta Nerada, who would take control of his body within the Sir Kibble armor, and essentially become the current Zykan. Thus, an undead knight made of living shadows.

Of course, none of that ever happened. Even before my desires to cut down content from the comic, or before I lost interest in Doctor Who because of poor writing in newer seasons, I ultimately decided that the side-comic idea wouldn’t be very good. However, I still liked the idea of Zykan being an undead knight, so I decided to work that into a new angle.

When writing this newer finale, I had to figure out what I was going to do in relation to Zykan, though it wasn’t that hard to decide on the best course of action. People really wanted to see Zykan suffer after Infiltration and Darkness Rising. Unlike Miracle Matter, who was mainly just an “accepted” bad guy and had very little reader connection beyond being the mastermind behind most everything, Zykan actively committed more acts within the story that got readers riled up.

Thus, when figuring out how to write the ending, I knew immediately that Zykan would be taken care of after Miracle Matter. It would provide a stronger degree of closure, since Zykan was a stronger villain as a whole to most readers. I also very quickly figured out how to actually defeat Zykan…

Voice of the Voiceless

If there were any single moment in Kirby Adventure history that I wish I could just completely erase from existence, it would be the scene in Average Days when Shat’l makes Shadik’s thoughts visible to the reader. Why would I delete that scene? Because it slightly undermines the giant build-up that I had planned from the very start of the comic for Shadik’s first spoken lines.

The idea of voiceless characters speaking isn’t an unheard of one. The first time I ever saw this idea was in Avatar: The Last Airbender. There’s a character named Longshot, one of Jet’s cronies, who appears in two or three episodes in season 1 and 2. He never speaks throughout the rest of the episodes, but when Jet is killed beneath Lake Laogai, Longshot finally speaks up to convince Aang and the others to leave Jet behind, lying that “Jet would be fine.” It was an interesting moment, but one I barely even caught as a kid since Longshot is barely a noticeable character anyway, and I felt that a reveal like that could be a lot more noteworthy.

Then, after shamelessly ripping off half of my character concepts from Kirby’s Dream Adventure, I found myself with my own silent character in Shadik, who was modeled after the base idea of Karby. Later down the line, 20 Times Kirby began, which had its own silent character in the form of Grace. I paid close attention to how both Karby and Grace were handled, and admittedly found myself disappointed with the results.

Both characters had their own voice reveals, but both felt a bit underwhelming to me. Karby spoke rather early on in KDA, but I don’t hold that too against BSX since his comic isn’t even planned to begin with and focuses mostly on random comedy anyway. With Grace, however, Gigi set her up to start talking suddenly when the characters’ abilities get swapped. We later learned that she never speaks because she’s storing her power for her Bomb ability, so without the ability she had no reason to stay silent. It still felt underwhelming to me mainly because it just gets unnaturally verbose, much like a lot of 20 Times Kirby, and the shock of Grace talking quickly died due to walls of text. But that’s enough about other comics.

With Shadik, I wanted to do this kind of vocal reveal “right”. Technically, even when Shat’l makes his thoughts visible, Shadik isn’t actually speaking those lines, and since it was so long ago too, it doesn’t quite ruin the effect of years and years of silent build-up.

Originally, though, Shadik was planned to take on projection-Keito’s role of giving the group a pep talk when Kirby wanted to leave the rest of the Squad behind to face MSG. For the new plan, I ended up changing roles for things, however, and when I needed a way to take down Zykan, I figured out the solution to all my problems.

One connection I surprisingly never really made was that between Zykan and Shadik. Shadik, since day 1 basically, has always been in control of shadows enough to have a significant “shadow energy” that we can see whenever he Shadow Jumps to places. Zykan, meanwhile, was calling himself a knight of shadows since day 1 as well. Thus, a final confrontation between the two would be really interesting, and would provide the perfect opportunity for Shadik to finally have lines to deliver.

The final thing I’ll say about Zykan is that a lot of people started coming up with lots of different theories as to a secret identity of who Zykan might “actually be”. My only response to that is a recommendation to reread the comic, and pay close attention to character dialogue. You may notice some familiar lines.

Victory dance. Best way to end a boss battle.

Also, I still don't think this is the last we'll see of Zykan. There's still 20 pages to go and he's already come back once before...

Plus, if my theory about his true identity is true, then it would be too good of a plot to waste.
