Tomorrow's Wind

Part 1

Ulti's Notes:

The credits theme of the original Kirby's Dream Land has been officially titled "A New Wind for Tomorrow". This credits theme was reused for the Spring Breeze subgame of Kirby Super Star and the remake. In the remake of Super Star Ultra specifically, the cutscenes of the game all got named in the Theater mode, and the Spring Breeze credits cutscene was similarly-titled as "Tomorrow's Wind".

Since Kirby Adventure was Super Star Ultra themed, using the name Tomorrow's Wind felt like a very fitting epilogue segment title.

Kaxo talking about 'gem fruits' is a reference to the free-to-start spin-off title, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe. Gem apples were a form of currency in-game that could either be harvested over the course of several days, or paid for in-bulk with real world currency. The game was relatively new at the time, so it was a small little nod that I was able to give to it here.

Original Author's Comment:

Part 2

Ulti's Notes:

The epilogue was going to be the last time I ever got to use these characters, so I tried to spend it with as many memorable characters as I could. Satomi was not one of them, but given that she was a character provided from my first art contest winner, the aura around that felt like I ought to give one small tribute, even if the owner of the character hadn't been around for like 5 years by this point. Satomi wanting to settle to become a 'storyteller' was a reference to the user, Story Teller Astralle.

Ulti's Notes:

At the end of Master of Puppets, Not-Raize suggested wanting to explore the Mirror World. I used that as an opportunity to include him and Shadow Kirby hanging out when Fune and Nameless got dropped off, seeing as that plot thread needed a bit of minor resolvement still.

Original Author's Comment:

Part 4

Ulti's Notes:

In the days before the Puyo Puyo franchise from Sega was being localized as-is, it had a few weird variations in the west as the puzzle game got adapted into reskinned versions based on other video game properties. On the Sega Genesis, we had Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and on the SNES, we got Kirby's Avalanche. So, in a weird way, Puyo Puyo is somewhat related to Kirby as a result.

These blobs in the final panel are Puyo blobs, but since Puyo Puyo was localized as "Avalanche", that's why Bandy refers to it as a game of Avalanche here. It was incredibly wacky and silly, and inspired by a recent playthrough I did of the game during a livestreamed marathon of various early Kirby games around the time. But it also befit the silliness of the Waddle Dees and of Captain Stitch, both of whom were fun enough that I wanted to revisit one final time.

Original Author's Comment:

This may or may not have been inspired by my recent escapades in my Kirby Livestream Marathon that I've been doing on Twitch.

Part 5

Ulti's Notes:

After all the failed dimension hopping, it felt fitting to end that mini-saga with a final, successful dimension hop, and also provide the direct reason why the characters wanted to bad to reach the Kirby's Dream Adventure world again.

BattleStarX would later reference this in his comic later, by having Kaaby start speaking a very stilted English, since nobody here in this dimension speaks the Poyoese language and she needed to communicate properly eventually. The KDA page that introduced this can be seen in the Bonuses section of the site.

Original Author's Comment:

06/14/17
Even in a different dimension, if you mess with her stuff, you won't be safe from an angry Kaaby.

Also, Kirby 2018 on Switch. That is all.

Part 6

Ulti's Notes:

None of the characters truly realize that Caiya's negative emotions towards Kirby were artifically placed there, but the important part to Caiya is that they felt real. Even when she got called out on it and was able to out-logic herself back into being reasonable, the fact that she spent a bit of time being so angry and not realizing it hurts her still.

And from personal experience, I can confirm that it's very easy to feel emotions that you don't actually consciously realize you're feeling, and to let those get the better of you until they get called out and you become aware of them.

Kirby giving Caiya a pep talk was a nice mirror to how often Caiya gave Kirby pep talks in previous epilogue segments. They really came a long way, in the end, and despite this rough patch, they'll always be friends.

Part 7

Ulti's Notes:

Had the comic taken its original trajectory, it's doubtful that this apology would have ever occurred, or at least certainly not so soon or in this fashion. But it wouldn't have felt right to keep the characters at odds with each other for a true epilogue, and thus both wind up being a bit more forgiving than they would have been in a different kind of story.

Part 9

Ulti's Notes:

Vezo's knowledge and association with robots was part of a mysterious backstory I had been intending to delve deeper into, but due to the cut content, a greater expansion of it was something I couldn't really squeeze in naturally. Thus, this page was my way of at least addressing a bit of it, but to an extent, the degree to which it didn't matter winds up justifying Vezo's own mindset of wanting to make these mysterious backstory elements not part of his character. It's weirdly meta if you think about it like that.

Original Author's Comment:

06/26/17
Vezo gets an extra epilogue page because he's SPECIAL and I really needed to at least spend SOME time providing a bit of payoff for the random bits of secrecy I've peppered into segments like Master of Puppets, Technical Difficulties, and Helping Hand.

Part 11

Original Author's Comment:

07/15/17
Shat'l's new coloration was originally, way back when, meant to be a bright gold. This was changed for a few reasons. The obvious one is to avoid the whole "yellow Kirbies die" meme from showing up once again, while secondarily related to that is that with Keito having been rather golden himself, I didn't want Shat'l turning gold to feel like he's acting as a "color replacement" or something.

Finally, I had new Shat'l-related colors that I was interested in using now anyway, which is what I went with. What does that mean, you may ask? Well, because his new colors that you see here are based on Létas's color palette from the KAS Project I did a few months ago. They look rather good on a Kirby, if I do say so myself.

Anyways, I also went ahead and did a lot of KA page updates between the previous update and now. Meet The KAS, The Beginning..., and From Dream Adventures have all now been fully re-updated, including lots of color fixing, typo-changing, and panel-layout reorganization. Go check them out if you're interested.

Part 12

Ulti's Notes:

Here's your explicit confirmation: Zykan was a reincarnated Galacta Knight.

Original Author's Comment:

07/17/17
As I've said numerous times, it might be worth going back through pages of the comic and paying close attention to what certain characters say.

I've updated a few parts of the site now that I've recolored From Dream Adventures. For one thing, all the crossover characters have been removed from the cast page, due to honestly not really being that necessary, but also because I didn't want to have to recolor the cast pages for the early KDA characters anyway. Secondly and more obviously, I've redone the segment select buttons on the comic pages. Chapter 5 is now its own separate entity with all three segments of it represented, and the From Dream Adventures button was properly recolored as well. All is now good in the world.
I'll be working on a few more old page updates before making a new KA page next time, too.

Part 14

Ulti's Notes:

This was the last vignette-style page of the epilogue, so I decided to do one last bit of self-referential comedy. All of the things Shadik spits up here were either directly seen to be eaten by him (the Bugzzy from The Beginning, the Shotzo from To the Tower, and the Waddle Dee from The First Mission) or imply an off-screen consumption during another segment (a Jungle Bomb from Tree to Tree and a Spideroo from Pay Day). The comic's history meant a lot to me, through all its ups and downs.

Original Author's Comment:

And yeah. That's one big pile of people. I wonder if Kirby barfs... It probably would restore 3/4 of the population in Dreamland.

Part 15

Ulti's Notes:

With where I was at in Kirby Adventure, I knew there was only one real proper way to end the comic: to have the story keep going, even if the comic didn't. The Squad wasn't disbanded or defeated, everybody's still friends, they're all still adventuring together, so an "And the story goes on..." moment felt the most appropriate.

To that extent, the best way I felt to illustrate that was to tie the ending into the next Kirby game in my "timeline is chronological release order" methodology. After the two spin-off platformers of Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby Mass Attack being the two games that got their stories represented in some fashion in the comic, the next game to release was 2011's Kirby's Return to Dream Land. So, the last few pages of the comic were made as an adaptation of the intro cutscene of KRtDL, with the Squad instead of Kirby and other friends.

Meanwhile, for this page in particular, Kirby's reference to jumping at picnics is to the end-of-stage minigame of Kirby 64, where Kirby would jump onto a picnic spread and have to aim for a particular food or item.

Part 20

Ulti's Notes:

Smack Jeeves Webcomic Hosting allowed for small blurbs for webcomic descriptions, ideally meant to entice a reader to check out your comic. The description for Kirby Adventure's was written right at the start of the comic, in 2010, and reads exactly the same as what was written underneath the banner on the About page on this website:

"Meet the Kirby Adventure Squad: a group of Kirbies who take requests from random clients and attempt to complete them! And mostly fail miserably!"

Except for the very first few years, until about 2013-ish, there was also a "Huzzah!" at the end of it, afterwards. I later removed it cause it felt a bit silly to have on the description.

When ending the comic... it was a moment of genius, I think, to repurpose those lines into character dialogue, cut huzzah and all, as a bit of a send-off. Similarly, Kirby's and Vezo's lines in the second-to-last panel equally reference the very first page of the comic, and how far the characters have come since then. It all came full circle, and the story continues on...

And with that, that's the end of Kirby Adventure. If you read through all of this here and now, thanks for giving it a shot, and hopefully all my 2024 insights into content from 2010 to 2017 was engaging, and the annotations helpful for providing context and information. I'm really glad I get to have Kirby Adventure in existence once again, as it still means a lot to me all these years later, and I'm still proud of it all in the end. If you'd like to, feel free to keep reading to see my original 2017 wrap-up thoughts, but for now, I've got bonus pages to write HTML for.

Original Author's Comment:

08/12/17
And so, it has come to this. The story may be over, but the adventure continues in spirit and in imagination.
It's up to you guys to envision what happens to the Squad in Return to Dream Land and Triple Deluxe and Rainbow Curse and Planet Robobot and Kirby for Switch 2018 and whatever comes afterwards.

That can be true about more than just these particular characters and comic, really. The level to which I've inspired other content is still surprising to me, and I know it will continue to inspire in the future no matter what happens. Through all the good and the bad, Kirby Adventure is a bit of a sprite comic icon now, if I may say so myself. Like, I'm not trying to sound full of myself, it just IS one of the more well known sprite comics here on Smack Jeeves, and undeniably the most popular Kirby comic in general. Maybe I didn't pioneer anything or innovate strongly, or even have the best plot or characters or spritework, but people are still aware of the comic. They're still fans of it, so clearly I was doing something right these past seven years.

Seven and a half years... It really feels like it hasn't been that long. I stop and think to myself how Technical Difficulties was three years ago, and yet it feels like it was just yesterday to me. I think that while my past self would have been surprised, confused, and maybe even disappointed in how certain plot elements turned out, he'd also have been really happy to see that I saw the comic through to fruition, and fulfilled most of the plot points necessary and conceived.

There would be a lot I would change if I were to redo this comic, and I don't think that surprises anybody considering how much I've made known how I dislike the way most of the comic's writing was handled. However, the biggest change I would say that the comic needed was to not start in medias res.

What that means is, basically, throughout the comic, most all of the characters were flat. Very few actual developmental changes occurred, with most "character development" just being adding more detail to their character traits rather than actually CHANGING the characters. This is due in part to everything being "normal" for these characters. The status quo was the nine of them going on missions, and they all knew each other for years. There was no room for development because of this, and most of the characters who change and develop ended up being side characters like Gigi, NAVO, Ryka, Talzo, Hali, etc. Honestly, it's impressive I was able to write likable characters the way I did with how flat they all kind of are. Granted, flat characterization isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's almost unavoidable, the problem is really just that ALL OF MY MAIN CHARACTERS ended up accidentally being this way. This was also part of why it felt like a good idea to kill off Keito, it shook up that status quo even just a little bit.

So, were I to redo things, I would have done either one of two things: Option one is start the comic sooner in the timeline. The KAS has just formed, they just beat Galacta Knight a few days ago, these characters are still getting used to one another, and thus they have their wacky hijinks without that status quo, thus allowing the characters to develop into the ones we know at the end of the comic naturally by interacting with each other and learning. Option two would be to focus the entire comic around Vezo, the only real newcomer of the group by technicality. While he never quite acted like it in certain ways, the story goes that he's only been a member for six months, so he'd be the most unfamiliar with the status quo and the other characters. Thus, by focusing on him specifically, we'd learn about the other characters THROUGH him, which would allow for flat characters to feel more naturally interesting as well, and make their depth feel not as forced, not to mention their development could also come from how they treat and trust Vezo.

But that's all negativity, really. Sometimes I focus too much on that. If that's the number one thing I would change, then what is it that I'm most proud of with Kirby Adventure? Honestly, I would go with the humor. My best segments, even earlier on, were the times I focused on just telling silly stories riddled with jokes. Technical Difficulties is still, I think, my best handled segment, and one of the most well-done things about Darkness Rising was the silliness of Dark Matter. When it came down to the major plot points, I felt I handled their seriousness fine, though less so earlier on in segments like The Beginning, but the biggest success would definitely be the comedy, I feel. Each character had their own flaws and traits that worked off each other nicely, and almost any one of them could be paired up with another for interesting results. My cast was large enough to have many different pair options that I was able to utilize, but small enough that we got to see repeat pairs fairly often as well, and I think that worked out well. Even segments like Pay Day and C Central, segments that I don't think were as good as they could have been had I focused properly on what I needed to, still turned out good because they had much more of a humor aspect than earlier counterparts to them like Helping Hand and Division Addition. I got better with the humor as time went on, and I really would say that I'm very proud of some of the jokes that I got to tell here.

So... where do we go from here? Well, Kirby Adventure is officially concluded at this point. No more pages, no more revamps, no side comics or spin-offs, nothing is planned and nothing is expected or desired, really. I want to move on from this old project and keep things fresh and new for myself. The closest thing you guys would get is if, in like five or six years or so, I decide to actually take my random KAS Project where I turned the KA cast into anthro animals and make it into some sort of spiritual successor, but even then, I doubt it'd be anywhere similar to this.

Now that Kirby Adventure is finished, I can draw my focus elsewhere. I've been keeping up with my personal Let's Plays on YouTube, occasional livestreams on Twitch, and art of both SFW and NSFW variety, easily while working on these last few segments of KA, but the one thing I wasn't doing was working on other comics. Anyone remember Shards of Krino?

That old CYOA comic is currently getting a reboot of its own in the works, and if you had it favorited and paid attention to the news (or just follow me on Twitter), you'll have seen a bit of a sneak preview of some changes. The plan is to figure out a good way for me personally to adapt my current drawing methods into making art-based comics, and then hopefully get some pages of the new Krino out before the end of September, but honestly I would expect the end of October or the middle of November to be more realistic. The only real block for me is figuring out the best method of drawing it, because I've already got character designs, a base story, and the new direction that I want to take it all figured out, (It's not going to be a CYOA anymore, by the way) so I don't see it taking any longer than that, but hey, I've procrastinated before, so who knows? There's no hard deadline, so we'll see what happens.

You'll have to keep an eye on the original Krino comic in order to see when the new one comes out, though, as there's no active site for the new one yet, and I certainly won't be able to announce it here to any worthwhile effect. Either that or follow me on Twitter or pay close attention to my Smack Jeeves profile. You can keep up to date on my goings-on in those locations, as well as looking at my other content if you're interested by checking out my YouTube channel and my Twitch page for streams.

Either way, this has been quite the long project, hasn't it? I'm really quite glad, in the end, that it turned out the way it did, and that so many people enjoyed it. So thank you to everyone for reading, whether you had an account and favorited or were just a guest passing by once or twice. Thank you to everyone who commented, even when it was spam, random roleplaying, or harsh critique. Thanks especially to anyone who sent in fan art at any point, for making it feel like I was making something really special to people. Thanks to LoneAlchemist, DestructionSeries, Peardian, Bimblesnaff, Djoing, and SuperScratchKat, who all in one way or another helped inspire or teach certain elements or skills that resulted in the product we have today. Thanks to KingCorp and D00D64 for their reviews of the comic so long ago. Thanks to Jarkes, FP, tekern, DarkNut255, Fusion Kirby, Drawkey, MarioKong, Story Teller Astralle, Alienoid, and CapedLuigisYoshi for their cameo appearances and art contest winnings, for without any of them the comic would have definitely not been the same. Special thanks to BattleStarX and Gigi19972010, who worked with me on crossovers and were both simultaneous rivals and inspirations in their own ways. Extra special thanks to Torkirby and Nashew, who mainly helped out a lot behind the scenes as people to bounce ideas off of directly and helped inspire and build confidence and interest. And finally, while it may seem a bit silly, thanks of course to Masahiro Sakurai, Satoru Iwata, HAL Laboratory Inc, and Nintendo, for creating the Kirby franchise (of which this entire comic and premise was based on), and providing my childhood and even adulthood with joy and fun, and not taking down this comic even though it's a violation of their rightful intellectual property.

It's been fun, everyone. I've been Ultizeta, and I'm finally signing out.
Kirby Adventure is completed.

I have to say, I'm really going to miss this comic. This was one of the first comics I read when I found SJ and, even if it does have some flaws, it still remains my favorite. You can say what you will about the comic, but SOMETHING about it has to have been good for it to attract so many readers. Look at how many people were sad and outraged when Keito died. I think it speaks to your writing ability that you were able to make a comic with a concept such as this so enjoyable. I look forward to your future projects now that they'll be your own original ideas and not based off an existing franchise.

Now, I came into this comic in its latter years - around when Master Green first showed up, I believe? But I still got invested pretty quickly, and I had fun the whole way through. Heck, it's probably in some way influential on my own Kirby work, even if I couldn't pinpoint in what way exactly. Thank you so much for finishing this. So many people just leave without warning in a hiatus. I'm glad you saw it through to the end, and I enjoyed reading it.

Good luck with future projects.

Dear Creators
This has been one of my favorite online comics to read. It's been really enjoyable to watch your characters triumph over the many different adventures, trials, and enemies they encountered. You did a really good job developing your characters, creating a substantial backstory, and making me both laugh and (almost) cry. I wish it didn't have to come to an end, but I'm thankful for what you've been willing to create over all these years. Thank you. Sincerely
Sudux
P.S. Now I'm really curious to see how the KAS would take Magalor's betrayal.

However, I still can't believe you killed of Keito. He was my favorite member of the team.

Since people are still commenting I think it would be nice if I gave my two cents in with my experience with the comic.
I'm not sure when I would say I started reading the comic I think I was about 10? I know you were in the middle of making the "To the Tower" arc and I have to say I was gripped from there. As a guest I'd sit by the sidelines and watch this adventure grow (you might possibly find my old comments in past pages but I wouldn't be able to confirm if they were mine or not). For me this comic is really one of the bigger parts of my inspiration to become a comic artist, the characters although they weren't the deepest, really resonated with me and I enjoyed seeing their life from their naive starts to their often divisive or satisfying ends.
At first I was a bit miffed about you wanting to get to the end already so you can move onto greater things, and there wasn't really anything I could say or do to change your mind so I just accepted it and made the most of what you did supply for closure. Which at the end I was pretty satisfied. This comic will probably subconsciously inspire me for a long time, and I'd like to thank you for taking the time and what effort you put into making these pages to give us all a story to enjoy and I hope this comic is only the beginning to possible possible projects that you'll make in the future.
I'm sure I'm leaving out some crucial feelings in this post but I don't think it's necessary to say anymore praise for this comic.

Just finished reading through this series for the second time... It's just that good. It really is too bad the comic had to end. It's my favorite webcomic (in other words, basically the only webcomic I've actually ever cared about). This comic has inspired me to consider creating my own strip of the same genre at some point. Thanks for the hard work you've put into this.

Um, hi? I know it is pretty late, probably should have commented much earlier than that. I don't think anyone will notice me at this point. I am very sorry what I said about the image thing when I was a guest at that time. Very sorry (face turns red of embarrassment). But I have to say that this was a very great comic. It was fun to read and it had a lot of adventures. This comic was also pretty hilarious too. I started reading this on September 2017, which was a month after you finished it. I have to say that you did a really great job making this, even though the comic went on hiatus for just about two times, one of which that the comic missed its 5th anniversary. I will forgive you for that. I also have to say that you are a very skilled artist, like the 300th page was a good example of your art. Speaking of art, this comic also has an awesome web page. There had been quite a few good fan art on the fan art page. Those fans did a fairly good job. You have created a pretty charming cast in which they explored through marvelous adventures and encounter obstacles. Those crossover segments were fascinating stories, but I have to be very honest with you, I don't think there is a real reason to have two crossovers with the same comic. I am not mad or upset or anything, just saying. It is totally fine. I want to give one little downside about this comic. It is just the time when you killed off a main character, Keito. I am not sure if that was the really best choice since the squad definitely won't look the same without him and it was kind of dark. It is generally hard to deal with death of a good friend. Many fans were really upset about this, but at least you put effort to keep the story going. You have done an impressive work, though, to keep the story for over 7 years. That definitely seemed like a while. It is a little sad to see this comic end, but hey, at least it had a good conclusion. It will take a lot of imagination to know what will happen to the squad next. Well, I am going to say this again, this was a very great comic, and I am not flattering, I am telling the truth. It inspired many fans to create their own comics. Well done for finishing this and thank you for creating this. Good luck on doing stuff you need to do! ;)
