The First Mission
Part 1
Part 2
Ulti's Notes:
Several of the small ideas immediately presented here are more worth annotating when they get given proper focus, seeing as I do wind up trying to explain several of the concepts myself. You know, like a real writer would strive to do.
Not that I wasn't a real writer, but I was certainly inexperienced, so all things considered, it's impressive at all that I would wind up trying to explain things. This whole First Mission segment was meant to provide an introduction to the cast of characters I had set up, and looking back on it, it's honestly not too bad.
Many characters get introduced across a couple of pages, and at this early point, most of them just had one or two main personality traits. Given that I was a novice, and that I was working with very similar characters that were only otherwise different by their color, I aimed to try to make their personalities very specific and narrow in order to help identify them a bit better. If someone saw this and went "okay, the orange one is inexperienced", then I did my job.

Part 3
Ulti's Notes:
You can see the degree to which I was focusing on "introduce simple concepts as immediately as possible" with pages like this. Caiya here is given three immediately-identifiable traits: sleepiness, hyperactiveness (which, ultimately gives an interesting bipolar vibe), and an interest in donuts. All things considered, it's not too bad.
The tricky one here to deal with is Keito, who doesn't really get much from this introduction other than mentioning he's the second-in-command under Kirby. He always was the most complicated character of the main bunch, but I think that's mostly because unlike the others, he never quite had an obvious trait to go off of. He had a personality, sure, but it took a while for it to become defined compared to the others starting out rather one-note and in-your-face.
While I'm here, I may as well also get into some of the real meat of the behind-the-scenes vibes. From what I can remember of the character creation, a lot of the concepts for the various main Kirby recolors all came from other Kirby comics I was reading around the time. I certainly wasn't the first to make Kirby sprite comics, and I had been reading them on the Kirby's Rainbow Resort fan website years before hearing about Smack Jeeves. Several character concept ideas were... 'borrowed', shall we put it nicely, from things I had read, though I never tried to quite just be a 100% copy. More like... 75%-ish.
This relates to Keito specifically because of a relatively-popular Kirby fan character from another comic (and animation) series at the time. I believe it was created by the user LoneAlchemist, and known as StrikeForce Squad (you can see some random other user on Page 1's comments call Kirby Adventure a rip-off of it. Looking back, they weren't that wrong despite my initial objections.)
In StrikeForce Squad, the main Kirby there had a best friend named Saito, who was a yellow-colored Kirby. Now, that Saito got a tanuki tail and wings due to some magical mishaps, and his personality differed quite a lot, but when I made my OWN yellow Kirby, I couldn't get the name Saito out of my mind, so I changed a few letters around and came up with Keito. That's actually why I pronounce Keito "kai-toh" and not "key-toh" like I see most people read it as. It's because I formed the name out of the base 'Saito' and didn't consider how other people might read it. Not that pronunciation matters that much, but hey, it's fun trivia facts.
As another trivia fact, when doing the KAS Project and renaming some of the characters, the new iteration of Keito got renamed to Saido, both because I had a lot of characters whose names started with 'K' and that caused them to blend together, but also as a homage to that original namesake (while still not keeping it identical).

Ulti's Notes:
Since he doesn't show up for a while, let's discuss Shat'l here.
I would probably consider Shat'l to be my biggest mistake of Kirby Adventure, looking back. I wrote him in as an advisor to Kirby and the rest of the Adventure Squad, as this sort of mentor-like, trustworthy character. Almost father-figure-ly, really. His biggest personality traits are being wise and calm, and offering up advice. And none of that is a bad thing, per se, but then you get into the psychic abilities I gave him, and he starts to fall apart and break the narrative cohesion of the comic.
Because I made him psychic, I used that as an excuse to keep him out of the action due to physical frailty, which helped me keep the 9-character cast to a bit more manageable levels (especially since most story segments don't tend to involve all 9 of them anyway). But because he's psychic, it becomes a really difficult justification for what he can and can't predict. I gave him too much omniscience, his knowledge was too accurate and reliable. Not only can he read minds, he can see the future perfectly, and it just becomes a massive plot hole in basically every circumstance.
There are times when I try to address it, but really, the best way to deal with it would've just not to give him the ability to see the future. All I can recommend as you go forward is to not think about Shat'l too much, because you'll likely just get frustrated otherwise.
As another fun bit of trivia, though, Shat'l is arguably also the entire reason why Kirby Adventure started. BattleStarX, who was in all of my comments sections if you've read those, was the author of KSSU-styled SJ comic Kirby's Dream Adventure, and I read that comic for 6 months before the start of KA.
BSX is colorblind and had Photoshop recoloring issues, which affected the color palettes of his many Kirby characters. At one point, he tried to make a white-colored Kirby, but failed at it miserably, so in an attempt to help, I made him an entire sprite sheet of a white-colored Kirby for him to use. He didn't take it, but now I had a white-colored Kirby sprite sheet, so I figured "why not make more and make my own comic?" And the rest was history.

Ulti's Notes:
The next pairing of characters introduced here are Saia and Raize. And frankly, it doesn't wind up being the most accurate introduction, especially for Saia. She's depicted as a bit of a well-meaning ditz, which doesn't last super long. She's more of a motherly, caring figure with a great sense of responsibility. Eventually, it comes into vision, it just takes a bit of time.
Meanwhile, Raize is generally a straight-man in terms of comedy, so he works here. He's a character who tends to be more in the background, as he eventually gains a strong sense of planning and strategy, but for now, he mostly starts as another Keito in a sense. It's just not super noticeable considering Keito and Raize haven't shared screentime, and won't for a bit.
If you read any of Yoshi & Kirby: The Originals, this is also something that got referenced near the end of that comic. At the time, Y&K was still considered my 'main' comic, though Kirby Adventure would quickly usurp that after a couple 10s of pages.
In the Kirby series, Warp Stars are floating objects that Kirby finds and pilots. They're somewhat magical, somewhat technological, but they're always depicted as Kirby's preferred vehicle of choice, so I used one here for Saia to drive.

Part 6
Ulti's Notes:
Kaxo, the angry red Kirby, is such a "Kirby sprite comic" trope that it isn't even funny. Aggressive, violent, and often unnecessarily so, it's just a series of traits. Using these traits, though, allowed me to eventually write something more interesting with the character, because it forced me to analyze why exactly someone would act like that. Especially, as with my desire, if they weren't actually a bad or sociopathic character. Hidden depths to a character is always interesting, so I guess I had those basic traits to thank for that.
Vezo, being the inexperienced newbie, was a good candidate to pair up with Kaxo during this introduction segment, because the aggressive bully style of Kaxo felt like a very appropriate rival for the geeky Vezo. It's a trope that writes itself.
The creatures that Kaxo is beating up are Waddle Doos and a Bronto Burt. The latter is a bug-like critter, and the former is a one-eyed creature who is a stronger counterpart to Waddle Dees (which we still haven't seen yet).

@CapedLuigisYoshi:
The point is not to change the content itself but to preserve the original ideas (with only a few exceptions) and mainly upgrade the visuals to better fit the rest of the comic. Rewriting pages to fix characterization issues (especially with Kaxo and Saia) would harm the integrity of the improvement, I feel, as well as affect the legacy of the comic itself. They're not remakes, they're just upgrades, to make the pages look more like how current fans more used to the current visuals may remember them rather than what they actually looked like in their original, less-than-stellar visuals.

Ulti's Notes:
Shadik was directly inspired by a similar character in BattleStarX's Kirby's Dream Adventure comic. They're both gray-colored Kirby characters who are mostly-mute, and physically stronger than their peers. Unlike BattleStarX's version of the concept, though, I decided to push the concepts a bit further. Shadik wasn't just mostly-mute, but entirely mute and never spoke at all, and I gave him extra abilities beyond just physical strength.
In order to justify him being stronger, I decided to make Shadik into a Shadow Kirby, which is a concept from the game Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. That game involved a Mirror World that had contemporary counterparts from most characters in Dream Land. Kirby himself had a black-colored copy known as Shadow Kirby in the game, who was mischievous but friendly. When I turned Kirby into a species in Kirby Adventure, it felt fitting to do the same to Shadow Kirby, so as a result, there was (in theory) multiple Shadow Kirbies.
In reality, Shadik (and eventually The Original Shadow Kirby) are the only ones ever shown or mentioned in the comic, but the principle is still effective enough.
So, with Shadik being a Shadow Kirby, that made it feel right to have him be stronger, in a sort of D&D-esque "Dark Elf" sort of vibe. I also gave him shadow-jumping powers, an idea I'm pretty sure I borrowed from a minor character in the Order of the Stick, who was a ninja that could teleport from shadow to shadow. For Shadik, I just allowed him to conjure up shadows at will, essentially giving him a form of teleportation, called Shadow Jumping.
I always used to say that Shadik wasn't much of a character, but I think that does him a disservice. He's not as defined as other characters since he doesn't speak, and emoting was difficult for him due to the limited visuals of sprites, but to say that he had no characterization and was basically a plot device wasn't really correct of my past self either. He's very straight-forward and operates at his own level, and tends to be good for reaction-fodder when the other characters are acting wacky. He's the ultimate straight man in a sense, though he had his fair share of mischievous moments too. His silence did also make it easier to keep him around in group scenes, though, which helped trim my main cast down from 9 to essentially 7 and a half, which was quite helpful.

Shadik is a Kirby of few words. But he still likes eating anything that bothers him.
Edit: Sweet, a Cast page! Note the section called 'Stored Ability' on each profile. That's essentially a Squeak Squad-based power that allows them to call on that specific ability at will. :)

Ulti's Notes:
Ah hello now, what's this? This is the first of 4 completely new, never-before-shared bonus comics I made for this archive reupload!
I made this on 12/24/19, since I had the ideas for a complete reupload a LONG while ago. (For a reminder, the comic originally ended in 2017.) The original plan was to insert 2 new pages into every single segment, but I only got around to making pages for the first two segments of the comic.
I didn't finish the idea because, honestly, I just never felt motivated to do so. Retroactively inserting new work into a finished project didn't ever feel quite right, and I was doing so at a point where I still felt like I should probably be moving on from Kirby Adventure.
That isn't to say the bonus pages will be problematic, though, far from it. This one, in particular, allowed me to do a small bit of fleshing out of Kaxo and Vezo's scene here that was missing in the original run of pages. In a sense, the bonus pages I DID get around to making were probably the most important 4 to make, since these first few comic segments were the loosest ones that could stand to have a newly-added scene or two.

Ulti's Notes:
I didn't mention it earlier because of focusing on talking about Shadik, but these guys are Waddle Dees, finally. They're the most common resident of Dream Land, and are often used as the most basic enemy creature in the games. They're the Kirby series' version of the Goomba, though they're also often friendly enough that one or several will happily help out Kirby. Often, they're depicted as being the minions and guards of King Dedede.
The head guard of Dedede's forces, as well as one of Kirby's best friends in-canon, is this Waddle Dee with a blue bandanna on his head, creatively known as Bandana Waddle Dee (or Bandana Dee). Starting in 2011's Kirby's Return to Dream Land, he became a mainstay character in the Kirby series, but his first appearance was as a side character in 2008's Kirby Super Star Ultra, the game where these sprites are all from.
This was written before KRtDL even existed, so there wasn't really much familiarity between Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee here. Though, given my alternate take on the history and characterization of everything, I'm not sure I would've even done much with Bandana Dee and Kirby at this time. Worst-case, I probably would've just used two regular Dees instead of making one Bandana.

Ulti's Notes:
The original conception of this segment was just "throw characters at the wall and see what sticks". Very quickly, that lost steam for me, and I started to flounder a bit in terms of joke-telling and pacing. While not necessarily bad, it's noticeable to me (and even to me back then) that there was something 'off' about what I was writing.
Looking back, I think it was just me lacking a direction and just writing whatever I thought of at the time. I didn't have a great plan for what to do with Keito and Caiya here, for instance, but I knew that I should write a new page for them since it had been several pages since they were last shown off, and this was meant to be an introduction for my cast, so I didn't want them to be neglected. Problem was, I had no clue what to do with them next, so I just tried to make something on-the-fly, and this was the result.
Later, I would refine my writing style such that I always had the broadstrokes of plot planned out, but the more minute details and moment-to-moment dialogue would be off-the-cuff and written as I made each panel. This is a writing method that's worked out so well for me that I still do it to this day, even with things like Leo the Magician. But at the time in 2010, I was doing everything on the fly, and that made it difficult to always write strong ideas. But hey, that's the learning process for you.

Ulti's Notes:
Caiya was another mistake of my early writing choices, I would argue. Or, at least, partially. We'll get to it, but for now, she's just... dumb as a rock, basically. It's nothing that hasn't been seen before, and it's something that I wasn't really adding to or saying anything with. The joke of 'dumb hungry character hallucinates something as food' is nothing special, but luckily, I pretty quickly realize a way I can do something different with Caiya by the next segment.
Now may be a good time to mention how Kirby in the games has a voracious appetite. Part of the gimmick of Kirby, if you're unfamiliar, is just that he eats everything he encounters by inhaling them into his mouth. This includes food to blocks to living creatures. The inside of his mouth is often considered a void or some other sort of dimension in canon, and past the very first game, eating special creatures will also grant Kirby special abilities too.
Given that I expanded Kirby into an entire species for Kirby Adventure, it only made sense to also maintain that aspect of how Kirby works, though surprisingly enough, characters eating things doesn't come into play very often, if at all. Shadik and Caiya tend to really be the only two who do anything related to sucking things up, and mostly that's due to Shadik. Not even the actual Kirby character in the comic does much inhaling. Ah well.

@SuperKirby64:
1. The Anime can not be considered canon. At all. It's really it's own series of Kirby.
2. In the Anime's final episode, Kirby eats his warpstar in a dream and becomes Star ROD Kirby.
So, yeah.

So why isnt THAT Kirby changed into Star Rod Kirby?
A. She/He Isnt main character enuuf.
B. She dosent have the power.
Or C. To early in the series.

Ulti's Notes:
Two main things to talk about here, and both are somewhat interesting topics! First, let's talk "Stored Abilities". This is a concept I made up for Kirby Adventure, but its rooted in a few actual Kirby games. My author comments would refer to it as "Squeak Squad-based", but it's not TOO much like what Kirby can do in Kirby Squeak Squad. That game would allow Kirby to store 5 different things in his stomach on the Touch Screen, to be activated at any point later. This included health, treasure chest collectibles, and relevantly for this, Copy Abilities.
Copy Abilities are the powers Kirby is most known for, that he can gain by inhaling and swallowing certain special enemies. Essentially, if anything has a notable or specialized power, such as 'fire' or 'swordsplay' or 'medicine', he can eat them to become things like Fire Kirby, Sword Kirby, or Doctor Kirby, just as a few examples.
This Stored Ability concept is more accurate to a mechanic in the Milky Way Wishes subgame in Kirby Super Star and Ultra. That subgame removed Kirby's ability to gain powers by swallowing things, and instead had Copy Abilities become permanent unlocks that you had to seek out within levels and obtain, and then you could activate any power at will. The main difference between Squeak Squad and Super Star is that Squeak Squad's were one-time-use powers you could store, while Super Star's were permanently available, though Kirby could only use one at a time.
The Stored Ability concept used for Kirby Adventure worked like Super Star's, but with the gimmick that every Kirby character who had a Stored Ability only had access to their one single ability. So Kaxo here can use Fire, but nothing else, and Vezo can use Cutter and nothing else. This limitation actually came about from another Kirby sprite comic I read from Kirby's Rainbow Resort, a comic by supercomputer276 by the name of The Superkirbies.
The Superkirbies was surprisingly influential on me, considering how few pages of it actually existed (only about 20 iirc). It involved a group of Kirby recolors who were a team of superheroes, and wouldn't you know it, they all had one single ability to their name and used their powers to help people in need. Sound familiar? Just wait, it gets better.
In The Superkirbies, the comic showed that their newest Kirby recruit was an orange Kirby who was youthful and inexperienced and looking to prove himself, but often got bullied by the other team members or ignored. His particular Copy Ability? The Cutter power. Sound familiar?
So yeah, Vezo here was basically a character cribbed from the Superkirbies, though like with all my copied/borrowed ideas, I fleshed him out in more unique ways going forward, they just started from the same initial blueprints. I was 13, I won't deny that I was a bit shameless. What matters more is that I strove to improve, and did so with aplomb.
While I'm talking about Vezo, now may also be a good time to mention my naming conventions. If you couldn't tell, nobody's really using names that are... well, human-sounding. Kaxo, Keito, Raize, Caiya, I was big on hard consonants and unfamiliar letters like 'x' and 'z'. It wasn't exactly unfitting, per se, but it did make it a lot more difficult to discern the characters' names, since they all used the same kind of convention. It's part of the reason why I renamed a lot of the characters when I did my KAS Project in 2017.
On that note, though, Vezo in particular is noteworthy because of where this naming convention originated. These kind of alien-sounding names came from my love of Bionicle toys around the time, and a lot of them had similar-sounding names to these Kirbies. Lehrak, Gali, Avak, Hakann, those are just a couple off the top of my head that I can recall, and you can see the similarities. I think I subconsciously realized that, too, because Vezo's name is one letter chopped off from two official Bionicle names: Vezok and Vezon are actual Bionicles. The more you know, eh?

This one was a lot of fun to write, since I made it up as I went along.
Hopefully you understand that Kaxo goaded Vezo into attacking him for the fun of it. He's just like that.
Also, yay for the first appearance of stored abilities! In case you missed my earlier post, the stored abilities are Squeak-Squad-based copy abilities that the Kirbies can activate at any time. Technically, it could also be based on Milky Way Wishes, except the Kirbies can only have one stored ability. To see the Kirbies' stored abilities, see the cast page.
Also also, in case you can't tell, Kaxo's line in the last panel is thought, not spoken aloud. That was the only way I could think of to do a thought. Meh, cloudy bubbles are harrrrd.

Ulti's Notes:
This comic was me doing my best to channel Belkar Bitterleaf from the Order of the Stick into Kaxo without actually directly quoting the character. Which, all things considered, is a step up for 2010-Ulti, given how previously I'd just rip quotes directly from OotS in some of my Yoshi & Kirby comics.

The benefit of introducing a character who can teleport and is no-nonsense is that when I felt I was meandering around too much and wanted to wrap things up, I could just have him grab the lost characters and forcibly regroup everybody. Ulti's Notes:
My writing style still tended to focus on goofiness often, which isn't too bad a fit for Kirby vibes in general. But knowing where Kirby Adventure goes in the future, this was definitely less of a "Kirby is cute and silly, so jokes like this fit it well!" vibe and more of a "lol I am 13 and very random, this is good humor at all times!" vibe. I'm just thankful that I grew up, as did my sense of humor.

Apparently Shadik hasn't gotten the memo to go to practice sessions for this... whatever it is. And this isn't the complete version. As you'll notice, Kaxo and Vezo aren't paying attention (mainly due to Vezo throwing Kaxo off of himself) and Shadik isn't in it.
Most of the time it took to make this was making that background in panel four. And it still looks hinky.

Ulti's Notes:
Especially considering that in Yoshi & Kirby, I had also just written a battle between King Dedede and a group of Kirby characters, I don't think that I had ever planned to actually have a major confrontation between King Dedede and the Kirby Adventure Squad here. This whole segment was never leading up to any sort of climax, just mostly being meandering meant to introduce the characters and overall concept of 'silly Kirby shenanigans'.
The problem is that, well, this WAS still the climax, and all of the comics basically leading up to nothing is definitely a bit lackluster. Then again, a fight scene that was 8 vs 1 would've definitely been too hectic, especially for me in 2010. So, a better idea probably would've just been to have this first mission be leading to something else, rather than an implied showdown with King Dedede here.
It's funny that I even involved Dedede to begin with, because spoilers, he doesn't really show up for most of the rest of the entire comic. I think I wanted to make the comic feel more closely-tied to Kirby themes from the beginning, but pretty quickly started to ignore the more common Kirby threads to either focus on nicher aspects of Kirby lore and canon, or on my own creations instead. In some ways, Kirby Adventure isn't even often THAT related to Kirby, which is amusing to think about.

Sorry to disappoint, but I feel this section has been dragging a bit too much. It'll be over next comic, so look forward to new mini-plots! :D

Part 16A
Ulti's Notes:
Another of my bonus pages that didn't exist originally! This one was made on 01/10/21, and depicts a much-needed closure scene for the Waddle Dee clients. It also allowed me to bridge the gap between the Waddle Dees' one-page original appearance, and when I bring them back nearly 500-ish pages later with goofier personalities. And who doesn't love creamy beans?
Part 17
Ulti's Notes:
I couldn't wrap up my first mini-story segment of the comic without trying to hook in readers with a mysterious cliffhanger, now could I? It's storytelling 101, basically.
This guy's deal was actually a bit in flux from original conception to final execution. I can't quite recall what his original story was, just that it was a bit different from what ultimately became his story in-comic. If you don't know what that is, though, I'm not gonna spoil it for you here, you'll have to read on for yourself!

We reach the end of the First Mission with a cliffhanger. This gives you lots of questions: who is this mysterious Kirby, and why does he/she want the Kirby Adventure Squad to fall? All will be revealed in time...

Yeah, who IS that guy?
Ulti's Notes:
Primarily, Kirby as a series stars this pink little puffball creature, named Kirby of course. He resides in the world of Dream Land on the Planet Popstar, inhabited by loads of colorful critters and wacky beings. The most common denizen of Dream Land are Waddle Dees, as mentioned above, which you'll see later. The self-proclaimed ruler of Dream Land is King Dedede, who is Kirby's friendly rival and is a large greedy penguin.
The location of Dream Land seen here is known as Green Greens, and is a typical grassy plains area that is the first stage of a few Kirby games. Most of this comic is based on Kirby Super Star Ultra, the Nintendo DS remake of Kirby Super Star. My general timeline for Kirby tends to follow the games' release order chronologically, so the events every Kirby game released prior to 2008 has already happened by the start of the comic. I'll discuss those when relevant.
As far as differences to accept, the most immediately-obvious one is that of the different Kirby recolors. A common trope of sprite comics at the time was to take a pre-existing character, change their colors, and call it a different character. This would happen often among inexperienced creators, and I was no exception back in 2010, but the advantage I had was that this was something that the Kirby games themselves would do during multiplayer games. Kirby already had a few non-canon yet official recolors, so in a way, all I did was take the concept from the game and turn these other Kirby recolors into an entire species and a bunch of named characters.
This, in turn, forms what I called the Kirby Adventure Squad: a group of entirely "original" characters that are all differently-colored Kirbies, who go out on missions to help those in need when requested. If you're familiar with it, think Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, essentially. The pink Kirby here is "the" Kirby, rather than an original creation, though his personality here is vastly different from anything seen in the games. For starters, he actually speaks full English, and is generally much more mature. Ultimately though, he's still a fun-loving and relaxed hero, but with added responsibility and more-visible sapience.
While the original comic page for this was made in 2010, much later down the line I elected to go back to a lot of my earlier pages and revise them a bit, to help make them more uniform and approachable. I have both the original page and revised page preserved, which you can toggle via the buttons as shown. This will be the case for any page that ever received a visual update at any point, though it will always default to the updated versions.
Original Author's Comment:
The first comic. This is a new thing for me (I've done a sprite comic, but not just a plain old Kirby comic), so it might not take off. But it might. For now, we have the first mission.

Uh, no, most of my palettes are from the colored abilities, like Plasma for Raize, Fire for Kaxo, Ice for Caiya, that sort of thing. I did make up Keito, Shat'l, and Saia's colors. Shadik and Vezo's palettes were taken from the Orange and Shadow spraypaints from Amazing Mirror/Squeak Squad.

@Sudux:
No. Not only would that, at that point, be blatant copying, but it's also always better to try and be more original with your ideas and put unique spins on them whenever possible, to keep your comic fresh and interesting to others. That isn't to say you can't be inspired by other Kirby comics, but doing the exact same thing or using the exact same character concepts as them is not a good idea at all.
