Average Days

Part 1

Ulti's Notes:

Welcome to the second segment of Kirby Adventure, Average Days! It was actually originally titled "The Plan", which I then retitled to Average Days for Unaverage Puffs, and then after a few years I went back and shortened it, because just Average Days flowed off of the tongue better.

This one introduces more of the idea of what the Kirby Adventure Squad is, beyond the 9 characters we've already seen. I had it in my mind to make it a full-on organization, mostly because of some police procedural dramas that I was watching around the time of creating KA. The predominant one of inspiration being the navy cop show NCIS, which heavily influenced the early relationship between Kirby and the new character Director Hali here. I even mention it in some original author comments, I believe.

Hali (named quite similarly to the Bionicle named Gali) was a rough character for a very long while in Kirby Adventure, mostly because I never quite knew what exactly to do with her. She had a weirdly adversarial relationship with most of the characters for a while, and frankly, I think the main problem just comes from the fact that I never really... had her DO anything. I called her a Director for the KAS, but that job title kinda wound up being meaningless, outside of the general vibe of "she's the boss". In retrospect, the necessities of the role in an in-universe sense should have been more evident, but she rarely does that much leadership or corraling, nor does she have any outside agencies to interact with or anything. Ultimately, I think I simply bit off a bit too much to chew.

Also, the original page's line of "I'll try not to get too wild" was a line I took from one of the physical Order of the Stick bonus books, in basically this exact same concept of someone's earnings being whittled down by the boss. Obviously, when revising the page, I wanted to actually write my own content, so I fixed the plagiarism, thankfully.

Original Author's Comment:

New segment, new character, new... newness, I guess. That brown Kirby you see is the director of the Kirby Adventure Squad as a whole. And it's a girl. Yes.

And no, Keito is not evil. He's just... ambitious. And you'd do that too if all you get from working is 10 coins, or dama. By the way, the name 'dama' for coins was created by my friend Hobbez. Although I didn't exactly ask his permission for it's use, uh I mean, cookies. :P

The brown Kirby leading being Kirby's squad is just wrong on so many levels. I mean, isn't Kirby the leader?

Kirby is the leader of a specific division of the Kirby Adventure Squad. The Director is the leader of the entire Squad and all of the divisions. What's wrong about that?

It kind of reminds me of Power Rangers SPD, where the main team we see is the "B-Squad." Of course, there, the "A-Squad" Rangers were WILLINGLY EVIL. Which is AWESOME, because usually they're either created to be evil or brainwashed.

All right, random Power Rangers reference out of the way, the fact that they only get a small portion of the reward also reminds me of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2. Seriously, even after you GRADUATE from the guild, the ONLY difference is that you don't have to STAY there and you can change the team leader! You DON'T GET A HIGHER PAY AT ALL! RRRRRRGH!
...Sorry.

Ultizeta

I made a new batch of KA page remakes, so let's talk what changed! Here, I fixed some text bubbles, and modified dialogue to steal less jokes from Order of the Stick.

Part 2

Ulti's Notes:

The original version of this page was done during a time when I was still trying to figure out what I wanted Keito to be, and so I experimented with this sort of... "loveable scamp" type character? Someone who does obviously-wrong things but is well-liked enough to be forgiven. It didn't really work out, and the concept was dropped as I realized his more loveable-goofball potential. It's good that I did, because rooting for someone who randomly embezzles from his friends would've been quite awkward, which is why in the (default) revised version, I instead actively rewrote the dialogue to make his actions more well-intended and not just very well-thought-out.

Original Author's Comment:

08/10/10
So Keito's off the hook and Caiya's got on it. What will happen to the money? If Caiya think's it's a doughnut, then it's fate is sealed, but we don't know that yet. Or rather, you don't know that. I do.

Ultizeta
05/18/17
Did I seriously consider these "cliffhangers" and not "jokes"? C'mon, they're not mutually exclusive ideas, past me.

Anyways, I reworked dialogue here to make more sense given Keito's characterization as well as Raize's handling of the situation. I also fixed the larger text in the last panel to look better.

Part 3

Ulti's Notes:

God, the whole 'alternate personality' aspect of Caiya was a fucking trainwreck, let me tell you what. This was my method of diverging from the aforementioned "dumb, food-obsessed, hyperactive idiot" tropes that Caiya had displayed during The First Mission. It's... not a TERRIBLE idea, in theory? But it's supremely poorly executed on both fronts.

There's no real rhyme or reason to her personality shifts, aside from a general occasional vibe of "she'll often fall asleep and swap personalities during that" that I sometimes adhere to and other times don't. It's never made clear how much the other sides of her personality remember/understand from their other side. There's no real world parallel to the phenomenon, which didn't stop me from occasionally trying to tie it into actual Personality Disorders or Schizophrenia in some older author comments that I no longer stand by fully. It's... just kind of embarrassing.

Not that this side of Caiya is a problem on her own, no, in fact this is the "main" version of Caiya that I quickly found myself preferring to write. She was intelligent, witty, adventurous, fun-loving, she was an ideal character for the comic. It just didn't feel great after a while to have her 'dumb personality' tacked on, and it took even longer for me to actually delve into what that might mean for her as a character.

Given how much I wound up utilizing the 'smart presonality' for Caiya, though, it retroactively really makes Keito and Raize look like morons for "always forgetting" that she's got two personalities.

Original Author's Comment:

08/13/10
I did say Caiya can be intelligent. But I changed the rules: She has multiple personalities, so can either be stupid, or smart. Not a very good combination.

Part 4

Ulti's Notes:

Behold, my ability to stretch out sprites in Photoshop. Truly, I was an unparalleled master of my craft. Please feel free to ignore the fact that I took a wall, randomly decided "the characters can walk through this wall for no reason, and it will randomly teleport them into a completely different area". It won't do you any good to question it.

Wake here introduces another aspect of the KAS that came from the police procedural inspiration: additional teams. The main idea was that Kirby led Division A of the KAS, and there would be other Divisions of smaller teams of Kirbies that would go on their own separate missions. This would allow the KAS to feel like a bigger and more formal organization, and expand the side character cast to a point where I could potentially tell stories with even more characters.

In practice, it doesn't achieve all of that, but I do at least still think the ways in which it made the organization feel a bit more formal and larger were beneficial to the vibe I was setting up, and there were a lot of stories I was able to tell thanks to me setting up the KAS as a larger organization this early.

The entire layout of this page changed! I also fixed panel 4, which originally was partially transparent for some reason. Finally, the dialogue was fixed here to make the joke at the end make more sense, as well as no longer imply random secrecy.

Part 5

Ulti's Notes:

Kirby is shown here using a traditional copy ability in that flashback joke panel. That's the Paint Ability, a rare power from Kirby Super Star, but more importantly, it subtly sets up one small aspect that often went overlooked in Kirby Adventure. While most of the Kirby characters (but not all of them) had their one single Stored Ability that they could use, the main, pink Kirby not only had a Stored Ability (of which we will see later) but also access to all abilities via his traditional Copy Abilities, a la the games.

Original Author's Comment:

08/20/10
Sometimes comic ideas come to me on a whim. I couldn't find any good 'advanced' backdrops from Super Star Ultra and so resorted to using a Canvas Curse backdrop. I noticed it was dark and drabby, so made Kirby notice it too. Then I had the idea of Hali painting it. Which made me think of Paint Kirby. Which created this mess. And so on. But I like it. A lot. Fifth panel made me laugh as I was making it because it was so NEON.

ALSO, I updated the cast page to make it look more official. Tell me what you think of the new Kirby Adventure Squad Member Files!

Hali, knowing of Keito's ambition, was bringing Kirby to her office. She wanted to know why Kirby gave Keito the money to split among Division A, when she knew that Kirby knew of Keito's ambition as well. Part 6

Ulti's Notes:

One major benefit of me going back to early comics at a point where I was making comics MUCH later was that I was able to sneak in little gags like this when remaking pages that were originally lackluster, as sort of retroactive references/call-forwards. Needless to say, expect ninjitsu and living plants to get referenced again in the future of the comic.

Also, to potentially help put into a bit of perspective how long ago this all was for me: between the previous page and now, I did my first ever Let's Play of Mega Man 2 on YouTube. Crazy, huh?

Original Author's Comment:

10/21/10
Guess who's baaaaack?

It's me, idiots.

Anyway, sorry about the very long wait. I felt this comic was getting out of hand, and I needed to decide what to do with it. In the end, I decided to make it what it was originally intended to be: just a random comic with the same characters who do random things. Hardly any plots, none of them major, that'll be all.

So if you don't like that, you can unfav this and I won't care. It's my decision.

On the comic itself now, I've changed the sequence's name from 'The Plan' to 'Average Days For Unaverage Puffs'. The reason for this is just to give the characters more spotlight, give you more time to become familiar with them. I'll also use their names more often. This way, I hope that the characters become recognizable.

On this particular comic, we scene change from Kirby and Hali to this group. The comic shows more of Kaxo's destructive personality, but it was mostly done for laughs.

With that, I bid you good day.

We came across a tribe of living plants today. Then Kaxo blew them up.

Part 7

Ulti's Notes:

Saia's Stored Ability, shown in a very un-flashy manner here, is the Parasol ability. In the Kirby games, it's a surprisingly useful power, as it can used as a battering melee attack as well as a shield to block explosives and incoming projectiles. In the air, it also allows Kirby to float gently down, like a parachute. This versatility makes it one of the better powers in the Kirby series, despite appearances.

It felt fitting to give it to Saia, given the feminine mother-hen vibe I wanted to give her character. This is about the time I started to figure that out for her, rather than the initial well-meaning ditz she was displayed as.

Original Author's Comment:

10/22/10
Ummm, right.

Randomness aside, yes that IS the Kirby we saw in The First Mission - Part 17. His big plan was ruined by an umbrella to the face.

Part 7A

Ulti's Notes:

This was probably the scene that most needed to be shown via a brand new bonus comic. I made this one on 1/13/21, and it was pivotal because without this page, the scenes with Hali and Kirby were infamously dropped and never followed-up-on.

My past self had decided that whatever route I was leading up to, it didn't feel interesting and I wanted to just go back to goofy antics, rather than having a serious discussion between Hali and Kirby. And then I stopped doing goofy antics and started taking the comic at least a little more seriously by the time of the next segment, so it just ultimately felt exceedingly awkward to have started set up for a conversation, never followed through on it, and focused on entirely other things instead. Making this bonus page let me correct things by at least allowing the build-up to have felt like it was meaning something.

And hey, I still managed to make it silly on some level, so take that, past Ulti.

Part 8

Ulti's Notes:

Arglabjaljglagjg

If Shat'l was my biggest mistake in a grander picture, according to one of my previous Notes sections, this set of 2 comic pages was probably my biggest mistake in a microcosm. I really, genuinely, absolutely, never should have made these two pages, and I sorely regretted it even only a few pages later.

The main issue with them being the big fourth wall break on Shat'l's part, which I only barely managed to tone down in the revised version of the comic, and also the fact that it allowed Shadik to "speak". Yeah, he's not technically speaking, and that was the excuse I was able to roll with in order to feel like I still had some bit of integrity with Shadik's silence, but... it really just may as well have been speaking, for all intents and purposes. This one small scene really hindered the effect of Shadik's silence as a character, and I was pretty glad that at the very least, most readers forgot this ever even happened.

Now, one could ask, if I was going back later in the comic's lifespan and making revised versions of these pages, why didn't I just rewrite this or omit it entirely? And the answer to that, for me, was integrity. I wanted to maintain the original intent of Kirby Adventure as much as possible, while mostly just cleaning it up. While there were some personality tweaks and dialogue changes or additions, I really didn't want to just actively rewrite that much, even to cover up massive mistakes like this.

It'd be one thing to change some dialogue to make a bit more sense like I did for many other pages, but omitting an entire scene or completely changing it up feels like it would've been a bit of a step too far for me. Even for bad things like this, I wanted to preserve the general way in which I was writing from back then. This was a thing that happened in Kirby Adventure, and there was no getting around that fact for me, so I just instead tried to make it as presentable as I could, instead of ignoring it.

Original Author's Comment:

11/25/10

I needed to go somewhere with Shat'l and Shadik, and this was the only thing I could think of.

Not sure if I spelt 'Apocalypse' correctly.

Also, brand new banner! :D

RUN FOR YOUR LIVES IT'S A SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE

Part 10

Ulti's Notes:

When I eventually include the character of Meta Knight in these comics, who himself is a slightly darker blue character than this dark blue Kirby is, I used that darker blue for his text bubble and people complained that it was nearly unreadable. Eventually, I conceded the point and stopped being stubborn, and went back and made revised comic pages in every page Meta Knight spoke in to fix his speech bubble color.

I bring that up here because, evidently, I never thought that this blue Kirby's text bubbles were ALSO too dark to read, so unfortunately, this is the color they're gonna be the entire time of the comic. It's not quite as bad as MK's original text bubbles, but man... hindsight is 20/20, isn't it?

"Thank the gods"? I thought he'd say something a bit more Kirby-related, like "Thank N.O.V.A."

That just proves to show why kirbies don't make the best villains.

NOVA isn't really a god. The Kirby series doesn't really have gods, the closest I can think of is 02. But this Kirby isn't evil enough to worship a dead white eyeball.

Even tho the subject's dropped, I still need to do this:
02 is basicly an after life image of the original 0. It looks like an angel, until you make it angry, or reveal it's cactus butt thing.
0 is a giant eyeball with another eyeball in it.
they both have red eyeballs...bloody...

Part 12

Ulti's Notes:

The Pep Brew was the original name for a common health-restoring item in the Kirby games. It's been since renamed to simply being called an Energy Drink, but I'll always prefer the name of a Pep Brew. Anyways, while it's not really anything more than a typical healing item like most other foods in the Kirby games, here I elected to make it quite sugary, in order to give it that extra 'pep' like the name might suggest.

Of course, characters getting a sugar high isn't a new joke, especially when it comes to normally-stoic characters, but this at least helped me continue down the line of Saia trying to be motherly and look out for her fellow squadmates.

Yeah, this one's REALLY random considering, in the last strip, Raize had just been scared by Caiya outside the base, and here, Saya is chasing a hyper Raise THROUGH the base... Just an odd continuity thing that would bug me if this comic wasn't INTENDED to be random.

Ultizeta
05/18/17
I updated the punchline on this strip so that it worked a little better. Vezo seemed a bit too mean agreeing with Blue Kirby here originally.

Part 13

Ulti's Notes:

Given how I was showing the very vague layout of the Kirby Adventure Squad Headquarters these past few comics, it's honestly quite questionable how in the heck Saia chased a sugar-crazed Raize all the way back to Green Greens during all of this, especially since they'd have needed to climb that whole wooden base section and come out of that hut there, then turned back around in order for Raize to faceplant into that specific wall. If I were to redo this, I'd likely have put this pair in a different location for this page, just to avoid somebody like Me-14-Years-Later overly-nitpicking it, lol.

Original Author's Comment:

hm... something I've been meaning to ask... if you were to give all 10 (11 if you count the evil one) puffballs a kirby ability, which would they have?

Ultimate Yoshi
12/04/10
I actually have given most of them Stored copy Abilities (see The First Mission Part 12), which can be seen on the KAS Member Files page.

Or for convienient purposes, here they are:
Kirby - Sword
Keito (yellow) - Beam
Caiya (blue) - Ice
Kaxo (red) - Fire
Saia (purple) - Parasol
Raize (green) - Plasma
Vezo (orange) - Cutter

Hali, Shat'l, and Shadik don't have Stored Abilities, but if they did, I'd make them something among the lines of Stone, Mirror, and Crash (respectively). The dark blue Kirby has a Stored Ability, but I'm not gonna reveal that yet.

Kirbysmith [DJ]
12/05/10
@locoroco1:
Yes, but according to his profile, it's not a Copy ability per se. The same could be said for Shat'l and her psychic powers.

On a side note, I think "Shadik" sounds too much like "Shadic."

Ultimate Yoshi

What was I even thinking when it came to the original version of this page's layout? So horizontal for absolutely no reason. I fixed that this time.

I also fixed the punchline, since Raize literally never does this again.

Part 13A

Ulti's Notes:

When trying to figure out where to put another bonus comic into the Average Days segment on 1/13/21, since I was still aiming to make 2 bonus pages per segment, I initially wasn't sure where I could put one. The last page, though, actually made me realize a tiny plot inconsistency I could patch up.

Kaxo was on guard duty during the "BUU!!!" page, but when Saia was chasing Raize, he was nowhere to be seen. So, I came up with a comic that could explain where he went. I THINK the original intent, based on the segment name, was that these comic pages were all taking place across several days, but after a lot of real life time passed, I tended to view Average Days as only one day of in-universe time. This was mostly because of the capture of the blue Kirby, who I didn't want to have spent multiple days sitting in his cage. So, because of that, Kaxo's disappearing act was a small plot hole that I could now patch up.

This was the final bonus page I wound up making, and I never did any more than this. So, in a weird way, this was the very last Kirby Adventure page I ever made. Funny how things work out, huh?
