My original conceit for Kirby Adventure's pacing was that, within each Chapter (aka, set of 4 to 6 segments), there would be one major, story-related segment that focused on the KAS vs Talzo's Gang. In Chapter 1, it was Escape! In Chapter 2, it was Jetting Across the Ice. Chapter 3's was technically Division Addition. Now, here in Chapter 4, we get to Infiltration, the much-anticipated next time there was a confrontation between the two groups.

Due to a sort of television-esque pacing and format for the comic, story-related beats happen far less frequently than they really ought to have, and many segments tend to wind up feeling like filler in comparison. It was something that bothered a LOT of people while actively reading the comic, originally, and I can see where they're coming from in retrospect. Were I to reimagine the story, a lot of the sillier segments would have more involvement or relation to an ongoing quest of some sort, since I think that'd tie things together more strongly than a lot of the random or unrelated missions that the KAS would go on.

Regardless of pacing, though, this segment wound up being quite the impactful one, and it's a treat to read, in my humble and totally unbiased opinion.

Welcome, one and all, to the brand new Kirby Adventure! Some of you have seen it already, but regardless, let me officially introduce you to the newly redesigned Kirby Adventure website!! I spent the past four days straight working on this, and I must say it was time well spent.

The biggest change, I believe, would be the fact that the middle section of the site has been lengthened. With it wider than before, what does this mean? It means I can go back to doing comics that are three panels wide again! Now that they no longer break the layout, I'll be using panel layouts like this more often. Heck, the last time I did a six-paneler like this was comic 367! For some reason, it took me until Master of Puppets to realize that vertically aligning was better with the old layout. Now, not so much.

You guys, however, would likely argue the most telling difference is the updated menu! I've been using the same buttons for all that menu stuff since 2010, so it was high time for an upgrade! For the most part, they're all basically the same with just visual improvements, however, some things did change about them! On the top menu, Shadik and Saia's buttons got switched, and Hali got replaced by Ryka. The next comic and latest comic buttons' arrows got color-swapped as well, and all the arrows were given borders and embossing.

The change that took the longest to create were the brand new segment select buttons! Now organized by chapter, the special new layout I created for them took ages to code properly, but I got it working! It's just as functional as it was before, but now it looks way nicer, there's more variety in it, and you even get little teasers for upcoming segments! Let the speculation commence!


Now, the comic pages aren't the only thing that have changed! For one thing, new characters have been added to the cast page! I also changed those images' host site from Photobucket to Smack Jeeves, meaning that all the cast pages now function properly rather than Photobucket screwing up the links!

The Links page has also been updated! I did away with the custom banners I had made due to them being too much of a hassle, I rewrote every description, and I've even added a ton of new comics! If you want to have your comic put up on the page, hit up the latest news post I made about that!

Finally, even the Fan Art page got a total redesign! The buttons now actually label who drew the image, a much-needed addition if you ask me, and some of the buttons have more appropriate cropped sections used. The art contest entries are also better organized, and all the 3rd contest entries were added. What's more, there are three completely new pictures on the page, one by CaymamCruncher and the other two by Spicyice101!

So yeah! It was a lot of work, but definitely well-worth it! I may not have the best comic ever, but it's undeniable that I put a lot of effort into this thing.



As far as this new segment goes, I think you guys will enjoy it. It's going exactly where you probably think it's going.

Talzo runs into the exact same problem I have as a writer: needing to take down Shat'l so that the entire storyline can be justified. If he's a psychic and can see into the future, that basically automatically jeopardizes anything you try to get past him. So I just kinda hand-waved it away by giving Kiina another mirror rod that conveniently also blocked Shat'l's future sight long enough for him to be kicked in the face.

Three years between appearances meant that the characters in Talzo's Gang wound undergo some significant characterization upgrades since their one other appearance in Jetting Across the Ice. It's actually really funny in retrospect how impactful Infiltration was at making Kiina, NAVO, and Zykan into interesting and beloved characters in the comic. I don't think anyone really cared about them after JAtI, but that's ALL about to change quite rapidly.

Back in Jetting Across The Ice, I hated writing NAVO. I think I figured out what I was doing wrong with him, and am now looking forward to his madness.


Talzo's actions towards Gigi will be explained, don't worry. He does know what exactly he just did so it's not as if he didn't recognize her.


And yes, that IS indeed a new character in the last panel! That Wheelie there is a new member of Talzo's group, and he is in fact Alienoid's contest-winning character! His name will be revealed next comic.

Now that the Wheelie has appeared, though, the segment select button for Infiltration has been fully revealed, too!

Whirr the Wheelie, a living tire vehicle, was a character given to me by Alienoid, the winner of the third fan art contest I held at the time. Whirr joins the ranks of Division D leader Satomi and Gigi herself as fan-submitted characters, which mattered a tiny bit more after I previously closed off cameo submissions.

Admittedly, he's the least impactful member of Talzo's Gang, but the puns were at least fun, and actually due to my tendencies to write broadly in advance and then refine the details in-the-moment, the camaraderie that NAVO and Keito shared in this jokery led me down an unexpected path. That wouldn't have likely happened without Whirr.

Zykan was extremely basic in JAtI, but then again, so were most of that gang. When reintroducing the characters here, I tried to narrow in on what aspects would make them more interesting antagonists.

For NAVO, it was to add to his silliness, rather than having him be obnoxiously annoying. For Kiina, it was to add to her logic and reasonability, making her not just the most pragmatic but also the least villainous (and, to an extent, the most tragic due to her missing past with Vezo).

For Zykan, on the other hand, it was to stretch his knighthood into a mockery, and turn him into an enigmatic warlord, of sorts. He's got an aura of mystery about him from his eloquent speech patterns, reflected in his unique knowledge of the orb artifacts and reverence he gives to them, but he's also extremely ruthless now, which you'll come to see.

In case you're confused, Raize didn't sit there and watch Vezo stab the teleporter with his cutter. In the last panel, he's just walked up to Vezo in the aftermath.

Kiina's quick on the draw to incapacitate Shadik, but not quick enough to catch a fleeing Vezo, it seems. At least she's learned from her previous encounter not to underestimate him.

This is also the second time Kiina has captured Kirbies simply by telling them to wait. They're so gullible.

This was a line of thought that got Hali a LOT of flack from readers, mostly from people calling her an idiot. Meanwhile, I really did think that this kind of overconfidence and overreliance made perfect sense for her.

I'd already established that the KAS had been around for 8 years by now, and even though there was an indeterminate amount of time before Shat'l joined and Hali was made Director, that's still probably like at least 6 years (if not longer) of Hali and Shat'l working together on the KAS. Shat'l has currently never actively been incorrect about a prediction, and as we saw from the Necrodeus Kirby Mass Attack stuff back in Pay Day, Shat'l CAN foresee disasters or major struggles.

The implication from Hali here is that Shat'l has previously warned of major disasters preemptively and prevented them, and thus by NOT warning of anything now, any perceived danger won't actually result in any consequences that would be worth noting. Thus, Hali remains unconcerned, despite Vezo's very-real fears.

It's a hubris that comes from Hali truly not imagining that anything could have stopped Shat'l from seeing into the future, and trusting him a little bit TOO much. Which, on another hand, could probably explain why Aika is so fed up with Shat'l's predictions: her own boss relies on that information too heavily.

The difference between Raize and Hali, two characters who otherwise are pretty alike in terms of logic and strategy, is that Raize has a stronger empathetic side. He's not these characters' boss, he's their friend. Regardless of what he may think about Shat'l's predictions, he's not willing to just stand there doing nothing while his friends are in danger.

Hali isn't stupid. This is just one of those thing that are obvious to the reader but not the characters. I mean, how often does Shat'l ever get out? How often does he ever get in a situation where he could be hurt? Shat'l, being physically weak, knows how to take care of himself and stay out of such situations, which is why Hali trusts him not to get hurt.

At least, I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

A large part of Gigi's character was contrasting how she's treated at the KAS, especially by Ryka and Neona, vs how she's treated in Talzo's Gang. Her feelings of being ignored are only amplified by how much she ISN'T ignored by her new friends.

Jarkes: Convulted and unnecessary city/ruins overworld with people in it for some reason? Check. Horrible camera and wonky controls? Check. Horrendous plot that really makes no sense? Check. The only real difference between Adventure and '06 that I can tell so far is that Adventure doesn't have any horribly broken boss battles, just pathetically easy ones.

@X : Crap its happening again.

Back in the Helping Hand segment, I included Navo the Capsule J2, who was very grumpy and uninterested in things. When I did so, the idea was that he was the 'true' Navo, and that the Capsule J1 NAVO who we had met in JAtI was an earlier model intended to be scrapped. That was my way of making NAVO a bit more interesting after he was obnoxiously random initially.

After Helping Hand hardly addressed the multiple-Navo question, it basically became dormant until right now, which was when I was able to address a more interesting aspect of such a backstory: Sure, it was a bit intriguing that there were two Navo's, but if there WERE two of them, and this NAVO was meant to be scrapped but was rescued from the scrapheap by the villains so that they could use him... how would NAVO actually FEEL about that?

This, combined with the goofiness of Whirr puns from earlier, led me down a path of NAVO redemption. Giving him a much more endearing personality that all stems from wanting to both just Exist, while also being Appreciated, meant that him meeting Keito, a verifiable goofball with a lot of charm, was a match made in heaven.

And Shadik is in earshot of ALLLL of this.

One of the most important things for me to figure out was the characters' goal here. Talzo originally attacked the KAS to try to kill Hali, and then later once he was in a group, wound up specifically trying to go after Kirby. However, at the end of JAtI, the MSG Boss told him to go after the Squad members instead. Thus, I took ahold of that line of thought and worked that into the plan behind Infiltration: Targetting the Squad members while Kirby wasn't around to protect them.

The presentation of this wasn't quite up-to-snuff, but most of the dialogue here is an unseen-flashback/continuation to the JAtI confrontation between MSG and Talzo. Basically, expanding on the "target the squadmembers" plan. I didn't want to cause massive death or anything, so instead I narrowed in on what I thought would hurt a character like Kirby most: not killing his friends, but making his friends turn against him.

As a result, the plan behind this essentially became Talzo using MSG's magic powers to... well, you'll see.

In case you don't get it...
All the dialogue in panels 1-3 that isn't Caiya's takes place right at the end of Jetting Across The Ice - Part 50, hence the identical dialogue of "MSG" from that comic appearing in panel 1. Panel 4 is a cutaway to that exact scene as the conversation between MSG and Talzo that we're reading about now was taking place. Talzo's one line in the actual present, panel 5, is a continuation of MSG's final sentence from the pseudo-flashback panel.

Hopefully all that made sense before reading, I tried my best to convey that but hey, if I failed, at least I can say that I did try, and now you have that written explanation.

What this will mean for Caiya, on the other hand? You'll just have to wait and see.

As I worked out what I wanted to do with Infiltration, early on I pretty quickly decided to kill off NAVO. He was the character I liked the least back in JAtI, and I figured it'd add to Zykan's ruthlessness to show him quickly dispatch a former ally without hesitation.

The path to getting there was unanticipated from a finer-details viewpoint, but this was always the intended result, to have Zykan stab a turncoat NAVO, who just wanted to be liked. While perhaps a bit quick for NAVO's overall appearance rate, it would still give both NAVO and Zykan a lot more memorability to them. So, even when I wound up loving NAVO way more in this segment, the sacrifice still felt worth it, for Zykan.

An update on the Links page: I've decided upon a few new rules for comics to be put up on there. #1, if a comic fails to update for three months, it will be removed until a new update and request for linkage is provided. #2, I need a banner before being able to link anything. #3, you need to already be following Kirby Adventure AND stick around. No links just for pure advertising or for moochers who favorite and then abandon the comic once the comic is up.

These rules will be put into place tomorrow, so any comics that are currently on the Links page that haven't updated in three months are indeed going to go poof. The one exception to that rule will be any comics that have actually concluded and thus cannot update any longer, or any of my comics, since, y'know, they're mine. I have that privilege, and besides, it's obvious which comic I'm referring to anyway.

Clearly, Kirby's going to find out about Talzo, and it's a logical connection to assume then that Gigi isn't all that she seems if Kirby sees her not in a cage. And while there would be ways for Gigi to lie her way past any suspicion, she's not thinking too clearly at the moment and took the action that would give her the least amount of effort to cover up in the fastest amount of time.

Huh, I just noticed Shat'l is missing in the last panel. Is this because Shat'l also turned invisible or you just forgot?

I still intended on killing NAVO, of course, but because I had already set up the idea that any time NAVO blew up, he would be recreated back at Evil Gang HQ, both myself and Zykan would have to find some other way of destroying NAVO. This, of course, gave Keito enough time to try to swoop in to save his new friend.

Even if NAVO was gonna die regardless, I couldn't just have Keito sit there and let it happen. Plus, this gave me the bonus of catharsis after Master of Puppets, when Keito flung the Spark Orb into combat as a projectile. Now, in his first instance of using his Stored Ability since then, he's combined the power of that orb with his own Beam ability, and enhanced his strengths. That's what I call a callback.

This was a very cathartic comic to make, especially after I had the idea for Keito to twist Zykan's line from 20 parts ago against him.

And thus began the meme of yellow dying.

The plan was always for NAVO to die in this segment, but because I always write in-the-moment, sometimes even the broad strokes of a plan can change. It depends on if something feels 'right' in the moment, but for a decision THIS monumental, it was something I had to deliberate on for a long while. And by that, I mean entire single night, lol

Switching the plan, specifically because of the arrangement of characters I had and was expecting to use, and having Zykan rub it in Keito's face by using a line from The Beginning that Keito used on Kirby during his own arena fight (about not turning one's back on an opponent) was just so utterly delicious that I couldn't resist the cold hard logic behind why it would happen.

Zykan, being as ruthless as he was, wouldn't pass up an opportunity to rid themselves of an opponent, and he plays dirty. He has no honor, despite his proclaimed knighthood. Kirby would be a distraction, Keito would be vulnerable... and future plans could still go forward minus one main character.

I think it was the boldness of the idea that really ultimately sold me on it. Kirby Adventure being such a goofy comic for so long led a lot of the characters to being beloved, so it was interesting to put them into stressful situations like here, and actively threaten them. But any tension would be lost if it felt like they had some sort of 'main character protection'. Murdering Keito in this way not only led Zykan to instantly skyrocketing to "main villain of the comic" status (and also instantly-love-to-hate-him status), but it also meant that the villains could truly be taken seriously. There WAS a legitimate threat, because if a main character could just straight-up die, who's to say another one couldn't also bite the dust too?

It's a rather significant pivot from the rest of the comic's tone, but it's an important one that I think still ultimately holds up. I've always enjoyed the idea of starting off simple and enjoyable, and slowly pulling back the curtain once people start to really care about the characters I've created. This wasn't quite a slow pull back of the curtain and more like I kicked the table over, but still, point stands, it's effective at getting one to really care about the characters, and it heavily boosts investment, I find. It's something I love to do, and maybe it's never gonna be quite this drastic again (truly, there ARE some pacing and tonal issues with the idea in retrospect, since it was such a whim idea), but the core idea of sneakily getting people to care is my lifeblood as a writer.

It was funny to me how initially coy I was about revealing that Keito had, in fact, died. So many readers kept holding out hope that being stabbed bodily through the entire head/torso/whatever-Kirbies-have WASN'T fatal.

A lot has happened in the past nine days. Two new Skrawlers videos, as well as a Skrawlers extra have come out, I've had more time to work on new reviews, my Let's Play of Luigi's Mansion finished and the full playlist can be seen here, Kirby Adventure finally received a second "professional" review since the one back in 2011 and can be read here if you so desire, I got Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (still haven't beaten it, no spoilers plz), and also it became March.

But on the plus side, Saia has finally become un-metal-ized!

Well, to be entirely honest, I'd prefer these names to any "generic" ones. It shows that you put a lot of thinking into your comic, since instead of just going "Yeah, let's name him Bob 'cause I'm too lazy to think up a better name," you actually put some thought into the name selections.

The 'Resentment Beam' thingy that Talzo did was planned by the villains to affect all of the squadmembers, one-by-one, but Talzo only got around to using it on Caiya before the whole NAVO interruption occured. This aspect was always planned, because after showcasing Caiya and Kirby frequently being supportive and close to one another in earlier segment conclusions, having them suddenly be at odds was gonna be a fun change of pace that I felt would have the most impact, as far as affecting Kirby's friendships was concerned.

The idea was basically that MSG's powers forced a feeling of resentment towards Kirby into Caiya, which was artificial but fueled in part by real emotions Caiya had. Thus, her brain logics-out a reason for her to be mad at Kirby, and uses that justification for her newfound hostility that she doesn't even realize she has. As for the plan, it would ideally eventually create an unmendable rift between Kirby and Caiya, and break Kirby's spirit and make him easier to overcome and destroy.

@Guest: Keito is my second favorite character in the whole series.

It just makes more sense to kill him off. When a character dies in an anime I like, I get really upset but I understand that it progresses the plot and can overall leave a better impact to the story.

Keito has always been a character that I thought needed more importance to the story and much more character development and personality considering the fact that he's second command, and this can show it in a non-obvious indirect way.

I want to make Keito possibly a better character by wanting him killed off, not hate him and want him to die for no good reason.

Here I was, hoping for some Kirby/Caiya fluff when he returns...

After so long of hating having to get around Shat'l's psychic powers, I used Infiltration as a reason to nerf him, essentially. Using my whim moment of killing Keito granted me a perfect opportunity to have Shat'l's powers no longer be perfectly reliable. It wasn't really his fault, it was because I made him this way, and I really had to course-correct him somehow.

It gets a reasoning later, but for now, it's just important to accept that he can't 100% see the future anymore, and that's to everything's benefit.


Well, except for Keito's benefit.

A key thing about Talzo as a villain was that I had, by this point, worked out his motivation and backstory in full. While it's not yet shown in-comic, the details of the backstory made it so that it didn't quite make sense for him to be the Main Antagonist. (MSG doesn't count, despite being the 'big boss', because his passiveness means that he doesn't quite have the impact needed to be a truly Main Antagonist in that sense.)

As a result of both Talzo being more understood by myself, and also evolving Zykan from a generic warrior into a bloodthirsty, enigmatic champion of evil, meant that there was inevitably going to be a status quo change for the baddies. Talzo had to be usurped, and killing Keito certainly did the job in that regard. This page here was mostly just a formality.

I personally think he should've killed off a less important character if anything. But this is still a great webcomic, I just hope that none of the other main characters end up dying. But I honestly hope that sometime in the next few chapters (Yes, I mean chapter 5-6), he's killed, or gotten rid of somehow. This comment is too long.

Kiina's backstory once again comes into light here, with the revelation that Kiina's lost memories were specifically the fault of Zykan and MSG's meddlings. It was previously unclear whether it was because of the villains, or something unrelated had happened to Kiina and they simply took advantage of her like they did NAVO. But now, it was just a little bit of cherry-on-top for their atrocities. In one fell swoop, Zykan showed how disloyal all of the villains were, and punished them accordingly for it.

I have a theory. In "Technical Difficulties," Kaxo finds a special coin. In Kirby Squeak Squad, that same coin summoned the ghost mini bosses along with unlocking the ghost power. I believe that Kaxo will somehow use the coin to turn Keito into a ghost, being with them in spirit, Kaxo will be able to see all ghosts since he has the coin, or Keito will become fully revived with the help of someone else.

@Keeby1234: If you wanted a reply, you should work on asking better questions. Suggesting that a villain should die isn't really all that worth replying to, because it's a fairly shallow thing to say. Meanwhile, asking something about Zykan getting character development is a much more interesting question that will therefore be more likely to get a response.

You can't complain about only being replied to when you make a good comment, because that applies to everyone. Regardless of if they're guests or "major commenters" (most of those people in your list aren't, myself included. They're just people who comment a lot.) If you get upset about it, it only makes you look bad, and other people will be less interested in what you have to say.

I'm not trying to be harsh or standoffish, if it comes off that way. This is general advice that a lot of people on SmackJeeves have to learn over time. If you look at early comments by Shard, me, or anyone else here, chances are their comments aren't really as interesting either (the reason we still have "first!" comments and the like is because these things get passed on to others who think it's okay). They learned to think about what they say and make comments that are worth reading. Learning this sort of thing is key to going anywhere on the Internet, really.

(This also applies to the people who keep complaining about the lack of updates. Looking at you, Fattino.)

Sapar: You have a very good point on that, and I agree. People shouldn't expect to be hotshots if they only post stuff like "update" (other guests and me ironically), "zycan should die", or "I like keito, why did he die?" It kinda peeves me and others that most people expect that just because they posted a comment, someone should reply just to acnoledge it.
On the other hand, us guests are guests for a reason, and that's the fact that the internet is a place you need to get used to. So even though you weren't, going too harsh on newbies is rude and cruel. We don't know.
And one last thing: I'm not expecting a reply for this, nor am I going to complain about it too much, but 31 days is a lot to ask for with sprite comics. I know I just ranted about posting "update already" messages, but still. This is a great comic, and you kinda left us on a cliffhanger. I am finished now.

You, however, have made some good points. Due to guests usually being people who are too young to create an account, some people expect stupid comments from them. @WaddleDeeKing: If your favorite comic is taking a while, there's always the rest of SmackJeeves. Kirby Adventure isn't the ONLY Kirby comic, and when it has competition like 20TK and Dream Adventures it's tough to say which one is even the best. There's nothing wrong with branching out.

In any case, 31 days is far from the worst unannounced hiatus of any comic, or even this comic in particular. If you take a look at Two Evil Scientists, you'll see that it gathered a very large following and became very good....and then the author just disappeared from the face of the earth.

It's perfectly okay to be worried about a comic's update schedule, it shows that you actually care about where the plot is headed. But its better to just keep those thoughts to yourself, because usually you're just going to come off sounding whiny. There's always a REASON why the author isn't updating, after all- maybe they're depressed, or they lost their computer, or they got grounded. Pestering them about updating will just aggravate them and make things worse, potentially causing them to delay their next update even more out of lost movitation or just plain spite. I'm glad to see that you, at least, have a bit more control.

(Final note: Guests still have to get used to the Internet, but that doesn't mean us accountees don't. I won't name names, but I can think of several people off the top of my head who have accounts don't have any idea what they're doing with them.)

@X and Sapar: Sapar does have a point about generalisation. I have realised from past experiences that some people want accounts on websites they like, but when they do they have nothing to do on it execp continue posting on comics like this with a new picture above their comment.
Also, there are some guests that have been guests for years and know the internet well, and the others have no/little knowledge of the internet as they just came on possibly a few months ago. Unfortunately, some members of the former option act like they are from the latter, and that happens enough to make all guests seem like internet newbies. I myself am an internoob, but I understand your common sense, Sapar. I probably follow the same type of logic.
And X, Sapar probably didn't mean to be insulting. If he was, I would be sorry for you. But most guests usually post maximum 3 words in each post, and even though you don't, generalisation usually sets in. If this site is anything like GameFaqs I will get grounded on the spot. Apparenty the site is too innapropriate. She gave me a huge lecture.
She can tell if I tried to get an account because she linked her email to mine, so whatever i get sent, it gets sent to mom. Which really didn't help when I tried to register on SmashPedia, and it sent me a "blah blah blah please confirm your new account on our website", which lead to the lecture.
So, since I can't use my email to make an account, no account. And that sucks, since I just drew 2 more drawings yesterday and they were good (I believe).

@Light: I'm not really a huge fan of this "Zykan is more powerful than everyone thing". He's just a side villain sir kibble to me. The fact that he never stood out as powerful before really makes this whole thing just seem unnatural. Why can't the main bad guys just stay main bad guys for once?

Idk where the whole plot is really going from here. I'm guessing something with Keito will happen soon, some kind of tribute to him or something. I just hope there aren't anymore unnecessary plot twists just for the sake of catching you off guard.

So, we all know Keito's dead, right? Here are my theories on him. 1: Remember Not-Keito? He would've joined the Squad, but then there would be two of them. That problem doesn't exist anymore. 2: The Ghost Medal Kaxo got from Daroach could revive him.OR turn him into a ghost, I guess. 3: The most farfetched of them. Way back in Jetting Across The Ice, Caiya mentioned that Shat'l mentioned a Life Orb being the most dangerous of the orbs. With a name like that, it HAS to help Keito in some way. As for the whereabouts of this orb, I don't know, but I have a guess that Banai and Xyxxa might be able to help. If you are reading this (congrats, you read comments all the way down here), check near the end of Tree to Tree. Take note of what Kirby gives the duo. Of course there's always the possibility that it was just a random treasure, but then again, it might not be...

I've been thinking and I've come up with a theory about Zykan.

So what if...

GALACTA KNIGHT?

After being killed by Kirby, Galacta Knight was resurrected by the Mysterious Shadowy Guy and converted into Zykan.

It's a bit far-fetched but it does make a bit of sense once you think about it. Both Zykan and Galacta seem to have a lust for battle and a bias against yellow kirbies.

Redkirby: I have a few ideas but I'd have to take a look back at the panels we had of him first.
Edit:Looking back at His eyes and measuring their height and width by pixels I can deduce that It's probably a kirby or a relative of the kirby species. The red eyes suggest an evil character obviously. Maybe a shadow character? We don't have many sprites of Dark Meta Knight maskless but it is a possibility. Another suspect is Shadow Kirby I don't recall if we've seen him in the comic so it's a stretch but still possible. Finally I'm guessing it's probably a custom character original to Kirbys Adventure .This is the most likely assumption given every character except Kirby (and to an extent Keeby) in this comic is an original character.

While looking at the comic in question, I do notice however that the place Talzo is in has red swirls whenever "He" speaks and they are focusing from the top/center off screen to the left. but in the last panel the background is pitch black when The Red Eyes guy is speaking and is coming from directly behind Talzo... Holy Crap! Someone else is MSG the Red Eyes are a different character! Even the speech bubbles are different!

Light and Shadow: I disagree. You said maskless DMK, and only with his mask does DMK have red eyes. Also, there are a lot of non-creative characters in the comic. Dedede, Meta and Galacta Knight, Daroch and Spinni, and Wiz are directly from the games, with maybe a slight personality change.

@WaddleDeeKing: Mysterious Shadow Guy came before Not-Kaxo as Not-Kaxo came from Master of Puppets. Well after we get our first glimpse at the people Talzo follows back in Jetting Across The Ice(for reference, I will consider Red Eyes separate from MSG until proven otherwise). Second I forgot about those guys(strange since I played every game they were in) but I was looking at the size of the eyes and how far apart they were which is quite similar proportionally to that of a kirby's eyes so they are ruled out anyway. Magolor could fit the bill, there's even pixel art of him KSS style but, his eyes are yellow unless in his boss form. Dark Meta Knight (just checked his official artwork) is apparently yellow-eyed also. huh. Not many red -eyed kirby-like characters are there? Looking at file images on the Kirby Wiki possible suspects are Magolor (boss form), Galacta Knight (possible revenge for earlier?), and Paintcia DX from Triple Deluxe. I only looked at suspects I knew had red eyes. If I missed anybody be sure to point them out.

Light and Shadow: The events of Kirby's Return To Dreamland don't appear to have happened yet in this comic, and even if they did, Magolor was de-powered at the end of the game. Galacta Knight is a very likely suspect, he indirectly caused the KAS to be formed and was killed quite brutally by Kirby. However, I see two problems with that theory. First of all, he's dead. Second of all, the shadowy powers that MSG uses seem different from Galacta Knight's abilities. He could be using some sort of object as the source of his powers, but in Infiltration! part 18, we see him refer to them as [his] powers. Paintia DX would be kind of out of the left field, don't you think? Also, Kirby Triple Deluxe came out after Mr. Red-Eyes' first appearance, so yeah. @WaddleDeeKing: Marx seems like a pretty good suspect actually, considering that he hasn't shown up yet as Marx Soul. But, his eyes don't really match up to MSG's eyes. Of course, as Light and Shadow stated above, the Red Eyes could be a separate entity from MSG. That doesn't seem very likely though, as when Talzo is remembering his conversation with MSG, the "Stick to it or else" is in the same speech bubble as the rest of MSG's dialogue. There isn't really much evidence to support or deny MSG being Zero Three, so it could be a possibility. MSG's speech bubbles are white, and Zero is white, but that's really the only evidence I can think of to support it.

Wait, what if MSG is Wiz? Wiz possesses a bunch of magical powers. His eyes are yellow, though, but this is a world where puffballs ride around on stars and fight fat penguin kings and stuff so Wiz changing the color of eyes doesn't seem that unlikely. However, Wiz's character profile states he doesn't show his eyes anymore, and MSG shows his red-eyes at end of Jetting Across The Ice Part 50.

So far the most likely theory seems to be that Mr. Red-Eyes is an OC.

Redkirby: Many of my suggestions are far-flung. My point was to find out who the guy with the red eyes and black speech bubble were by process of elimination.
A quite possible theory that we have overlooked though is that the white text box is not MSG's regular voice. It could be that when he projects his voice across the entire room it turns white to signify he's speaking out loud and then it changes to black when he speaks directly behind Talzo. This would explain why the line "Stick to it or else" came from both text boxes (black when he is first told the line, white when recalling the line). I'm still guessing that either Red Eyes or MSG is a shadow character due to the dark colors (red and black) and shadowy powers that affect the mind (Dark mind? no he has to be dead because of Amazing Mirror). Something we're missing however is in Infiltration part 18, MSG specifically states that he doesn't want to kill any kirbys as that will anger Kirby. Rather he wants to use them to hurt Kirby almost like he wants to psychologically torture the poor guy.

Despite all of Zykan's manuevers, though, he still wasn't technically the leader of the operations. Much as he fancied himself that, and I imagine that had he the opportunity, he would absolutely aim to usurp the MSG as well, Zykan still knows his limitations. The MSG brought him back from the dead, so there was some clear powerscaling difference between the two that even Zykan knew better than to directly oppose.

So, uh, hi. It's been a while, hasn't it? Much longer than I anticipated, honestly.

What can I really say? I lost my motivation for a while, and then when I started working on comic-related content again, I was focused on stuff that wasn't this. Honestly, the only reason I found the time to make this comic was the fact that I noticed that we hit a special milestone for Kirby Adventure: 500 fans!

So, thanks guys! It's great to see so many of you guys like my dumb little Kirby sprite comic that I started on a whim.

Anyways, I'll admit that the hiatus I talked about in the latest news post isn't quite over. I'm going to likely make page 600 sometime soon, but after that, there'll be another hiatus. This time, it's not because of motivation, though. I've just got too much to work on, honestly, and the idea I have for the next segment is so grand that I want to be able to truly focus on it and make it as good as I can, and I can't do that when also mass-recording videos, working on the kinks and beginnings of my new comic, and the biggest thing of all: getting started at college. So, yeah, I don't have the time necessary right now to work on the extensive pages that I have planned.

I won't be entirely gone, though. I just won't be working with Kirby Adventure specifically. I'll still be uploading frequent Let's Plays (since the last page, I've done serieses of Spyro: A Hero's Tail, a co-op run of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, and I've just started up one on Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. There are also weekly updates every thursday for The Skrawlers, and I'm also decently active on Twitter and tumblr. I've also been working hard on a brand new comic, a Choose Your Own Adventure starring my own original world and characters called Shards of Krino, so you can follow that and have a part in the story if you're interested.

As far as the Fan Art Contest that I started goes, I'll extend the deadline of it to September 7th, giving you guys 5 more weeks to draw something for that if you're interested, or make a new image if you've improved artistically in the past five months. I don't have very many submissions for it, so there's a good chance of winning if you enter!

Anyway, glad to see you're back, Ulti, if only for a couple comics. You are right, college takes priority over this, although hopefully you'll get through your first year better than I will. If I may, I'd like to emphasize the importance of social skills, as the lack of such was one of the main things making my first year harder than it needed to be. It seems you have a good grip on that though, but if you don't, I recommend seeing what you can do about that. Either way, good luck.

@WaddleDeeKing: If the Character was in Kirby he counts the only ones that don't count are cameos from other games. Like I said The Hands count because they were bosses in AM. Whereas the cameos from Kirby 3 would not even if the animations imply laughter. So yeah he counts.

Original Comic Revised Comic

I think one of the largest losses as far as Keito's death was concerned was his relationship with Caiya. Due to their frequent friendship and closeness, as well as some of the subtle shipping potential I had inserted into a few pages, such as Master of Puppets, there was a real close connection between the two that was perhaps a bit more than just friends. The loss of Keito, combined with her newly-forced resentment of Kirby, was gonna be prime material for drama in upcoming writing.

But that's for the next few segments. For now, it was time to mourn. I couldn't end the segment without a proper burial for Keito, that's for sure.

So... time for the write-up on this chapter. I'm sure a lot of you want to read this one this time around. I just hope that I can accurately reflect my thought process given that I started this segment almost a year ago. That's what happens when I go on hiatuses, I suppose.



The base concept of Infiltration came from all the way back in Jetting Across The Ice. With that segment, I planned to have a pattern of "Talzo segments" that involve his group of bad guys appearing once per chapter. This sort of got screwed up in the long run, though, because of the Talzo segment for Chapter 3. I consider it to be Division Addition, but it's more of a stretch, and wasn't really what you guys wanted out of Talzo segments. Combining that fact with the fact that my segments were getting longer and more of them were appearing in-between meant that you guys had to wait way longer than you probably should for this major story progression. Sorry about that.

Speaking of Division Addition, I had also always planned for Gigi's spy-hood to lead into Infiltration. Gigi would personally infiltrate the KAS, learn some secrets and better info about the Squad (which she acquired by talking to Ryka), and then letting the gang know when would be a good time to strike. Gigi finding out about Kirby's vacation was the critical moment in C Central that led into Infiltration's plot.

I originally actually planned to have Talzo figure out about Kirby's vacation in the beginning of Infiltration, but I found the tie-in of C Central to Infiltration was too good to not do, and it gave me more time in Infiltration to do things.

Shat'l's role in Infiltration was extremely tough. I've been having a lot of problems lately writing around Shat'l's psychic abilities, and I find it hard to write comprehensible plots that don't have too many holes related to his future sight. I had a problem writing in Shat'l, so I gave Talzo the same problem and told him to fix it. Thus, I sort of cheated with limiting his psychic powers as per usual with Kiina's mirrors, and Talzo kicked him unconscious right from the very get go. Talzo's plan needed to work this time, and Shat'l was a huge barrier to both me and him.

Speaking of Shat'l, this is jumping a bit, but about him being wrong when it came to Keito: This is part of a plan that I'll just be upfront about. I need to really limit Shat'l's abilities in the future. Is there a reason for it? I'll be able to figure something out in the future, perhaps, but at the moment, it's literally just to make him less useful so I don't have to constantly write around him. He won't have as accurate info about the future anymore, and that's that. I don't care if it's bad writing, I really regret having a psychic character to begin with and I want to try and fix the issues he's been plaguing me with.

Anyways, let's talk about Whirr. As I mentioned, he was the contest-winning character from Alienoid, but to be honest, I had some admitted issues with him. Really, it's just that the personality Alienoid wrote for me with didn't lead him to have a very active presence in a large group, but I tried to give him one anyway. I don't think it worked too well, but I gave it a go. Hopefully his writing wasn't TOO bad. At the very least, it gave me some great opportunities for jokes.

A lot of people complained about Hali's reactions to Vezo's story. In her defense, Shat'l HAS always been right and on the ready in advance, so the fact that Shat'l was wrong for once and didn't see what would be happening here, it was something that not only not worth considering, but would be completely asinine for her to do given what she knew. How many times has the group been in bad situations before but Shat'l didn't really say anything truly bad would result? Hali had no way of knowing this would be any different. Should she have still helped out, though? It probably wouldn't have made a difference. One could say that it was her faith in Shat'l that caused Keito's demise, but in her mind, whether or not she helped, Shat'l would've seen her decision and what resulted from it. Her first instinct was to not worry, and so she stuck with it because to her, it wouldn't have mattered anyway.

Raize, on the other hand, had the same faith in Shat'l, but still felt he had a duty to take action when he heard how bad it was. They have different levels of faith in that regard, where Hali is compliant to accept things as fate, Raize acknowledges fate but will still try and do whatever he can. Vezo, in contrast, doesn't really care about what Shat'l says or doesn't say. He is a purely action sort of guy, where he sees what is going on and doesn't care what is fated to happen. The dynamic between the three clashed pretty strongly for a few comics, and I found it very interesting to write.

Talzo and Kiina in this segment were written in a much more kind light than they had been in the past, I feel. Kiina especially was shown to be much less violent and rational compared to the others, and Talzo's sympathy shone through far more than it had in the past. He's got a grudge against Hali, but basically explicitly says he's only going with this plan because of the MSG. The real question is why Talzo is with the MSG, but that'll be a question answered for another day.

Kiina being reprogrammed finally gets truly confirmed here, as well, as previously it was just speculation by Vezo. We won't be seeing this current Kiina anymore, though, because of Zykan's revisions. A lot of characterizations are going to be affected because of this chapter.

I'm glad I got to finally follow through on MSG's plan back from Jetting Across The Ice. Talzo basically filled Caiya with feelings of resentment towards Kirby, which will be hopefully noticable in future interactions, and it's why she was angry at Kirby at the end of the segment. It didn't make her evil or anything, remember, MSG's ultimate goal is to make Kirby suffer, and what better way to do that than to make his friends turn against him?

Side note: My Kirbyverse uses the metric system, despite me being American. Why? Because it makes far more sense than anything America uses. The end.

Kirby returning at the end of Infiltration was the entire reason why I had Pay Day where it was. Kirby not being at the base gave the opportunity for Infiltration to happen at all, and I knew that it would create the great scene where everything is going the villain's way and then suddenly, hope arrives in the form of Kirby. I needed Kirby to take a vacation, and realized how easily that would factor in to having Mass Attack's story. Since I already had Epic Yarn back in the segment-that-shall-not-be-named, Mass Attack being next was not only accurate to my games-timeline but would allow a future Return To Dream Land chapter to occur even sooner and it fit in so well with the plan I had in mind. And as such, I sent Kirby off to the Popopo Islands in a set-up segment and used that to fuel the plot of Infiltration.

Okay, time to talk about the three major characters in this segment: Keito, NAVO, and Zykan.

I knew from the get-go that I would be utilizing NAVO and Zykan in these new ways, as I was unhappy with their appearance in Jetting Across The Ice. Zykan felt generic and NAVO was extremely annoying to me, but I had ideas on how to rework them.

Zykan previously had knowledge of the Seven Orbs, which to me implied that he was smarter and more ancient than he seemed. His use of calling MSG "master" when he got frozen also made him seem somewhat regal. The idea of a villain who was truly ruthless and heartless but guised it under chivalry and regality intrigued me, and that's what Zykan became in this segment. He claims to be honorable, but really, he's just evil to the core.

NAVO didn't start out as being shown as sympathetic in the initial workings of the segment, but he was insane in the new ways right from the get-go. His madness was far too repetitive back when I originally wrote him, and there really was no substance. I took the near blank slate I wrote in 2011 and gave it more life. I finally got to explain the whole NAVO-Navo issue, and gave him real emotions behind the insanity. It made him feel more real and enjoyable.

It's all thanks to the Whirr puns that led to Keito and NAVO making a connection. The Whirr puns were thought of on the spot, as I figured Keito's sense of humor would have him say that. When I was doing the resulting reaction panels, I was wondering what to do. I originally had all of them reacting negatively and Keito simply responding to their negativity with the totally whirr-th it pun. Before finalizing it, though, I had the idea of NAVO quipping back. I loved the idea, and so included it. I didn't realize how many ideas it would give me, though.

It was the punchline of NAVO and Keito continuing to pun on Whirr even when Keito was a prisoner that led to the connection between the two of them being made. I figure that Keito was mostly looking to get out of the cage, but still meant everything he said, and truly intended to help NAVO out after everything was okay. Keito still recognized NAVO as a bad guy, but after the connection was made between the two, which was basically spontaneous because it felt right for the characters, I decided to go even further.

It was this connection that led me to a new idea, one that would've been considered pretty shocking:
What if NAVO was killed at the end of the segment?

Yeah, that was my original plan. After the blossoming friendship, I realized how Zykan didn't have any post in the base and could easily end up hearing NAVO's traitorous plans and actions. Zykan killing NAVO would add some shock value, make people upset after growing to like NAVO, and show more of Zykan's ruthless nature. It was a win-win scenario. The fact that Zykan stabbed NAVO first was a left-over of that idea.

That stabbing was actually originally meant to kill him, but I had the idea to drag his death out a little bit longer with more dialogue to help emphasize some of the points and connections I wanted to make and show.

It also gave me the chance to show what happened with the Spark Orb after Master of Puppets, and I loved the chance to reference the old joke of him throwing the orb at Not-Caiya's face.

The Spark Orb comic was the last comic where I was going to be using my NAVO dies idea. It was literally the night before the next page, where I was thinking about positioning of the base and the characters, what would be the most logical way to kill NAVO.

I thought about the positions of Zykan, Keito, and NAVO, as well as where the room they were in was. I soon realized that Kirby, who had just entered the base, would be showing up very soon on the left side of the room, and would come across Zykan and Keito. However, I had just cornered Zykan, and so Kirby wouldn't really notice him when he initially entered. This led to the truly shocking idea: Kirby entering the room would likely distract Keito enough that Zykan could sneak attack him to get out of being cornered. What if this ended up killing Keito?

Of course, an idea THAT radical was something I had to ponder for ages, but every way I looked at it, it not only made perfect sense, but it would be such a good story element to include. I wanted Zykan to look truly evil, right? It made sense for Zykan to take out the immediate threat, right? It wouldn't affect much of my future plans, right? Right. I also needed a way to get the villains out of the base quickly, and the threat of a pissed off Kirby and NAVO would be fantastic for getting the entire group together. NAVO could break the floor, something Keito couldn't do if I stuck with killing NAVO. Everything about it worked so well with what I wanted with Kirby Adventure, and in the end, my reluctance to kill off a main character, one of my FAVORITE characters no less, was overshadowed by the sheer amount of story weight it would add.

So, yes, I came up with killing Keito mid-segment, the night before the comic, on a total whim. It's just how I write, I guess.

The reactions to Keito dying were... interesting, to say the least. A lot of people were sort of underwhelmed from the initial stabbing, this turned into extreme anger and hatred towards me when people realized it was fatal, and later a lot of you guys are in denial about the whole thing or believe there's gonna be a way to bring him back. All I'll say for right now is that I don't plan on making Keito come back from the dead. Doesn't mean I won't have another whim idea in the future that I'll use, but I'm not planning anything at all.

I enjoyed figuring out how all the characters would react to this, though. That's what this funeral page is for. I feel like it helps work out their characterizations a little bit more.


So... yeah, that's Infiltration. Sorry the conclusion to this took so long, but hopefully the finished segment was worth the wait.

Just a reminder that the art contest ends on September 7th, in a bit more than two weeks! I'd start drawing now just so you remember, because there probably won't be another comic update in-between now and then. Make a note, do something if you plan on entering, because this is going to be the final end-date for this contest. No more exceptions.

The next segment of Kirby Adventure is going to be really big, just so you know. I've been planning out for a really long while, more than I usually do for segments. It won't come out immediately, though. I've got college and other stuff to work on, so it's gonna be a while before I feel like I'm truly ready to make the commitment that the segment is going to take. Just know that it'll really be worth it when it comes out, so the wait will be worth it. I want to make it the best segment I can.

As for now, though, I've been Ultimate Yoshi, and I am finally signing out of Infiltration. Hope you enjoyed it.

Overall, I do commend you for killing off a main character, and I do think that it is a great way to push the story in a new direction, but I have this nagging feeling that Keito was a bit of an odd choice. I think it's mostly how you killed the biggest comic relief character right when the comic is making a big push towards a darker mood gives me this "well he has to die now, the comic's getting serious" idea in the back of my mind, even when I know it's not the case. Still, I like to see you push for a further serious tone, and I feel that these past few comics have been significantly better than Keeby's death back in "The Beginning". I hope Zykan is shoved face-first into a pike for this.

...I also think Raize's quote hit me the hardest. Right in the memories.

Ultimate Yoshi: I can't say I liked this chapter, because this one wasn't to be liked, but I see its importance, Hali was annoying for actually beliveing more on what Shat'l didn't saw than what the others saw, but was understandable, and Keito will be missed, but I see you're maturing as an author, and that's good to see!

But if Zykan doesn't dies I eventually I will get really angry.

Gotta say....well done here, Ulti. Never in a million years would I have expected to see THIS chapter coming, and watching events unfold gave me a sort of bittersweet feeling. I think we're all gonna miss Keito, but his loss opens a bold new path for this comic to take.

I look forward to seeing where it leads.

Ultimate Yoshi: I really like how this comic has grown from when I first started reading it. Keep up the good work.
On a side note, may I suggest the idea that Shat'l's psychic powers are weakening or are blocked by the powers of MSG? that could help you work around the "Shat'l's power has to be limited to avoid plot holes" issue.

Call me evil or something, Keito's death surprised me, but didn't bother me all too much.
I really do like how his death unfolded character development and plot though.
This chapter is my 2nd favorite

Interesting, though, how the thought of Keito's death was more spontaneous than the possibility/plan of NAVO's.

I might have to find previous comics because I don't know/recall what MSG stands for (if that abbreviation was revealed). Yikes… =

DarkMario1000: MSG just stands for Mysterious Shadow Guy. That's what everyone calls the guy directing Talzo's group since his name hasn't been revealed yet.

DarkMario1000: You have MSG as Mysterious Shadow Guy and someone I've decided was a separate character currently known as Red Eyes. Red Eyes can be seen towards the end of Jetting Across The Ice and I consider him different because both have different text boxes, when MSG speaks there's a red spiral pattern that appears in the background whereas there is no such pattern when Red Eyes speaks, and the only thing linking the two together is one line that they both said.

I literally just discovered this webcomic three days ago and have since read through the whole thing. Ryka and Caiya are my favorites (DONUTS AND SODA FTW) but all the characters are really enjoyable, even if I have trouble keeping track of all the names sometimes. ;^^ Anyways... The last time I cried this hard over a webcomic was when Brawl in the Family ended last year. RIP KEITO YOU WERE AWESOME DX

@Mina: Not exactly... Not-Keito, both Navos, Pyra, and Lycor are still alive. Perhaps it is only a matter of time before they, too, fall...

Now that I think about it, since NAVO was orginally going to die, there was no way all yellow people could have survived this chapter.

I was kinda expecting Shadik to sacrifice himself in some freak accident to save the team, but Keito? I wasn't expecting that. Anyway...

Keito was a good soul and a great member of the KAS. I had good times with Keito, especially during the Magic Sock Incident (Tear In the Fabric). May he be in our hearts forever. -_-

@Planetbox: Interesting. According to the wikipedia article, that anime has two versions. The original Japanese one which is a supernatural horror show, and the English dub which replaced most of the original dialogue with a more Dark Comedy centered script as well as much ad-libbing.

Redkirby: Just think about it. Has Shat'l ever been on a mission with them? Yeah, yeah, I get it, he's fragile or something, but he's been hurt multiple times, and there's never been a big crisis. He could just be saying that so he can stay at the base while they're all gone, possibly obtaining secret info and getting the opportunity to return back to his lair.

Also, the fact that he couldn't vision Keito dying seems a bit odd to me. Ulti stated that he wants his power to be weakened, but Shat'l could have just lied about that so the squad wouldn't have any warning of the attack.

Just the way Shat'l is being presented recently just seems...suspicious. Don't forget the fact that MSG's text box is White.

Years later… I finally come back and read this.
I can understand why you did that, but… this doesn't regain any trust I had lost in that moment of anger.
That said, I'll just be binge-reading the pages I missed from now on, because I AM still curious about it.
