Division Addition was the first of a couple of "side story" style segments that focused on an alternate cast outside of the Division A Kirbies. After setting up various Divisions in previous chapters, as well as all of Hand earlier, it was really high time that I actually DID do a story told around some of those groups.

Thus, Division Addition was born, and of the Chapter 3 Rough Patch, it's probably one of the best, if not the best segment in this section. It introduced a lot of fun themes and, while it was still a bit haphazard and I massively lost creative motivation midway through it, it ultimately holds up a lot better than its surrounding segments.

The Division C members here were a lot of fun to explore a bit after their brief appearances in Average Days and From Dream Adventures. This was the segment that really started to flesh things out for them a bit, as well as remind people who Neona, Wake, and Nameless were at all and what they might be a bit like.

Aika, if you don't recall, is the grumpy dark-purple Kirby who leads Division C.

Oh, by the way, I ended up getting Pokemon Black recently, mainly for the sake of trading with myself and starting a new game without erasing my White file (I've actually got quite a few Pokemon from events on White, and I don't want to lose them). I nicknamed most of my Pokemon after characters from your comics. ...AAAAND I just discovered that my main Water-type, Deska the Seismitoad, can't learn Waterfall OR Dive. It can't learn any Ice-type moves either, so maybe naming it after Deska wasn't the best character name for it. But seriously, why would it not be able to learn Waterfall? Dive I can sort of understand (it's a Water/Ground dual-type), but Waterfall? Really?

I'm not sure how I managed to misspell "division" in the original panel 2 of this page considering it's in the title of the segment, but yet past Ulti managed to.

Retroactively, it was a bit of a missed opportunity for me to properly involve Satomi for a change. A lot of this segment revolves around Ryka and Division D, so it would've been the perfect time to involve the Division D leader and make her fan origin feel worthwhile.

Instead, I once again sidelined her, which was a shame. But at the very least I didn't sidelike Ryka. After Meet the KAS was a bit boring for her, Division Addition was basically Ryka's resurrection arc, and it did absolute wonders for her.

With all of the females in this comic, Lycor is the only male shown. And he's unconscious.

While Division A only consists of two females out of nine members, Divisions B-D, plus everyone else, have seven females and four males. I feel like that makes up for the skewed gender ratio in the main cast.

Division Addition was written on-the-fly, like a lot of my writing was. I let the characters themselves dictate where things would go, as I had them interact with each other, and whatnot. This was what wound up keeping Neona around, since I figured she'd be chill enough to accept Ryka's soda offer.

Here, after engaging with a few of the characters, I realized that there was an opportunity here to do a bit of a Meet the KAS redux, where I could talk about a few of the extra side Kirbies. Was it a good idea? Not particularly, it's once again repeating that segment's issues of blatant exposition and infodumping, but on the other hand, I do at least very quickly realize that as well and move on.

The benefit of having a segment NOT be focused on infodumping like Meet the KAS was that I could re-shift the focus onto Gigi and how she was engaging with the Squad once I felt the infodumping was no longer enjoyable to read.

I JUST BEAT KIRBY'S ADVENTURE, 3D CLASSICS VERSION ON THE 3DS! ...The 3D part is only really noticeable at certain parts, like in the ending cutscene. Other than that, it's exactly the same as the original NES version, except with the "first you dot the circle" intro and a "2011" copyright date added to the title screen. Though I hear the 3D Classics version of Kid Icarus has more to it than the original NES version (chief among them a save feature...).

...You know, Nightmare's second form was a HECK of a lot easier than his first form, mainly because it's a lot more predictable and his attacks are easier to dodge. However, at the same time, he's a little bit harder to hit.

Ryka can use logic against others (but not all the time), it is fun to use logic against others (but not all the time)

The way that this segment really fleshed out Ryka, Neona, and Gigi, was extremely important in the end. Without Division Addition, they never would've become a trio. I really do love how their personalities formed and bounced off of each other because of this segment.

Ryka was the most defined of the trio thanks to Meet the KAS, with bits of goofiness like the blow-up doll and her soda interest. I used her questioning attitude that spawned from Meet the KAS to make her a very curious character, always interested in asking questions to people. I also emphasized her zaniness, without her becoming truly lolsorandom like FP did. As a result, she became super fun and goofy, with a few major quirks and expanded soda obsession, that helped drive plots and be the Heart of the trio.

Neona was picked out of the Division C members to be with Ryka mostly because she was also a girl, but with her one other trait simply being a disdain for waking up early, she was a lot more blank slate than the others. Thus, when I paired her with Ryka, Neona quickly became a snarky straightman archetype, grounding Ryka's growing zaniness with a hefty dose of bemused realism and smirks. She became playful and egged some of it on, knowing where to let loose while also being serious enough to be a good mid-point between the trio.

I brought in Gigi as a spy for the KAS because I thought it'd be interesting drama, and Gigi was the obvious pick because she was a villain the readers had seen, but the characters hadn't. The dramatic irony was better than creating a new character for the role, but what it did mean is that Gigi became overly important compared to other art contest winners' characters (like Satomi). It was accidental, but at the very least the imbalance of representation led to a fun character here.

Gigi, the character, very quickly became distinct entirely from Gigi, the person and fan. I rarely took the real Gigi into account when writing this Gigi, and she basically became my own character due to how much I wound up using her and creating just for her. There's a reason she's the only fan-created character, contest or cameo or otherwise, who made the jump from Kirby Adventure to the furry-based KAS Project concepts.

With Ryka being wacky and Neona being a chill middle-ground, Gigi's role in the trio became deadpan and serious. She's the mature one of the group, despite her antagonistic role. Her being a traitor had a very interesting looming effect on the relationship that was growing between the trio, and is probably one of the better-integrated aspects of the writing at this point.

It's a bit unclear here, because of the panel-by-panel structure here, but the gag here comes from Ryka moaning gibberish specifically in response to Neona continuing to talk. Like, in the sense that Ryka wouldn't be going on like this if they were ignoring her, thus Neona kept egging her on to get her to keep being silly.

It's not a bad joke, but it's one that would've worked better either with a bit of contrast (panels, perhaps, without Ryka moaning because of a pause in conversation, or maybe Ryka actively interrupting Neona's text bubbles), or it would've worked better in an audio-visual format like an animation. Ah well.

SOMEBODY CALL RAYMAN, BECAUSE RYKA IS A RABBID IN DISGUISE!

This sunglasses mouse is Spinni, and they're one of the Squeaks from Kirby Squeak Squad, a band of thieves that I've mentioned before in annotations. They're a bit of a ninja-esque member, and my personal favorite of the group, which is why I used them here.

Due to misinformation and lack of clarity at the time of 2012, there was a bit of debate around Spinni's canonical gender. Spinni is officially a male mouse, as confirmed by the English localization of 2011's Kirby Mass Attack, as well as the Japan-exclusive Kirby mangas and novels. However, there was an incorrect idea being thrown around that in the original Japanese manual for Kirby Squeak Squad, Spinni was referred to with female pronouns.

For me, I quite liked the idea of Spinni being a girl, so I considered her a girl in Kirby Adventure's canon. Officially, though, Spinni is a boy. I suppose in a way, you could consider her trans in this comic, if you wanted to read it like that?

Part of the Mirror ability's toolkit is using reflective magic to attack with. I took it a bit of a step beyond that, and gave Gigi the ability to create electrifying bubble shields and barriers in places. It's not a thing Mirror can do in-games, but it made sense to me back then to give to the Mirror ability, and it still feels appropriate nowadays too.

Anyways, yes, Spinni is a girl in this comic. Spinni's gender was never stated in the original Squeak Squad, but in Japan she was female. What was the previous comic?

The 'cake fiasco' refers to all of the events from Kirby Squeak Squad, as detailed before in previous annotations. To sum, the Squeaks stole Kirby's cake, and he went on a rampage throughout Dream Land and both unleashed and destroyed a sealed eldritch demon in order to get his cake back from the Squeaks.

It was, indeed, a fiasco.

Spinni mentions the Popopo Islands here, which if you remember from the Tree to Tree annotations, is the setting of Kirby Mass Attack. Since Kirby's Epic Yarn just occured in Kirby Adventure canon due to Tear in the Fabric, I wanted to keep setting up Kirby Mass Attack's plot as an upcoming event as well.

The Squeaks, after their appearance in Kirby Squeak Squad, didn't reappear in Kirby again until Kirby Mass Attack. So, since I wanted to be setting up Mass Attack, I needed to get the Squeaks to said Popopo Islands so that they could participate in that game's plot properly.

Normally, it wouldn't be a question at all, but since I was using Spinni here to begin with, I deemed it necessary to mention so that I could gain that bit of set-up advantage since I already had Spinni here at all.

One of the stranger things I did with Division D in this comic was never have any character already actively present in the Division, outside of Satomi the leader. Ryka got added to it, and now Gigi got added to it, but before Ryka and Gigi, the entire Division was completely empty. It's a bit of a plot hole that I never addressed.

Hi guys! I've got lots to talk about!

1. One more comic left to go for Division Addition, then we're on to a new segment! This one will probably be popular amongst you guys!

2. Sorry about how little I've been updating recently. Trying to keep daily updates for Paper Mario 2 and Skyward Sword on my YouTube channel has been time consuming, pair that up with school and family time, I haven't had as much time to worry about my comics recently. Hopefully that will change considering how close PM2 and LoZ:SS are to finishing.

3. However, I know for sure that I will be getting on a regular schedule for this next segment. If not, you can always rely on Gigi again to get me comic-making.

4. Don't bug me about comic updates, guys. I have a life, you know. Getting comments about how I fail and that I absolutely have to make new comics are extremely annoying and they make me LOSE motivation to make new comics. The patient-er you are, the more likely you'll be to get new comics when I'm not uploading for a little bit.

5. Next up, I'm doing a shorter, pre-recorded, pre-edited Let's Play of the first 3 Mega Man games on my YouTube channel, which has daily updates. 6. Last thing to talk about: How many of you actually enjoy my YouTube videos? Whichever way you guys prefer, I'll be fine with. Hi I'm Guest!

Things were getting a bit ridiculous for Kirby at this point. Do you see what I mean when I said Kirby was becoming this incessant grump?

There have been four segments in Chapter 3 so far, and literally every single one ended with Kirby saying something angrily and walking off, mad about someone or something. It's practically a meme by now.

This one also came a bit out of nowhere, too. I think at the time I had justification for why Kirby would say this to Hali, but if I can't really see the justification for it while rereading all of these segments one-by-one to prepare this site, then I don't think it was a particularly impactful or involved justification. It just reads as being a complete non-sequitur, which makes the anger even more awkward.

Ah well. It's a small blemish on what's otherwise a surprisingly decent and enjoyable segment. There's a bit of a downward trend still after this, but we're definitely through the worst by now, and on the road to recovery from this rough patch. Only a couple more segments til we've steered clear of the Dark Era of Kirby Adventure Writing entirely.

I don't know what to say here. Division Addition is over now, but...

This segment was a near disaster, and not because of the plot, really. The characters worked fine, the story was decent, and there was a fair amount of humor in this.

But on the other hand, this segment took me SIX MONTHS to complete. SIX FREAKING MONTHS. Jetting Across The Ice didn't take nearly that long, and its like 20 pages longer than this. Why did this take so long?

I hate to admit it, but I feel like my motivation is shifting from Kirby Adventure to another outlet entirely. See, let's rewind for a bit. Let's take a look at 2009 and 2010. These two years were when I started comic-making, and the introduction of Yoshi & Kirby (the original comic). I got about 150 comics during that time period. Mid-way through 2010, I also began Kirby Adventure, and late 2010 was the start of my YouTube channel. So, 2010 was primarily focused on Yoshi & Kirby. Then, in 2011, it's impossible to deny that Kirby Adventure WASN'T the main focus. Six long, very good, segments occured from January to December, and there were tons of daily updates and very rarely did I miss a week or two. But, then, now, in 2012, Kirby Adventure suffered.

First, there was the whole 'new computer, no photoshop' deal that cut Tree To Tree in half. Second, school has been more difficult and caused me to update less due to being busier.
Third, I didn't enjoy a lot of these segments. Tree To Tree and Helping Hand were both a bore, then Tear In The Fabric had the chance to make that up. Nope, too many people disliked it so I sacrificed and cut it short. Now, I was looking forward to Division Addition, but because of how long this dragged on, I can't bring myself to say that I enjoyed this segment.

But still, I haven't said why my motivation is slipping. See, the big change that occured between 2011 and 2012 was one game: Super Mario Star Road. The Romhack made by Skelux of Super Mario 64, and my sixth Let's Play.
While I was unable to make comics between Tree To Tree, I decided to take up Let's Playing to bide my time. Super Mario Star Road was one of my biggest hits in my opinion, and it got me in the real Let's Playing mood now. My previous 5 LPs were almost pathetic in comparison, and now that I knew the formula to making a good LP, I was hooked. Kirby's Dream Land 2, Yoshi's Island, then the behemoths that were Paper Mario 2 and Skyward Sword. I loved doing these LPs, but at what cost? The cost was my comic-making motivation.
Now that I had videos to record, edit, render, and upload, and so many games to play, that took up the majority of my free time. Kirby Adventure was placed on the sidelines, and Yoshi & Kirby's restart was barely paid attention to.
In addition, I may have been a bit more motivated, but then the comments started to turn me away. A lot of you were complaining about the quality dropping a bit, which helped in draining a lot more motivation, which in turn caused the quality and rate of production to decrease even more. I'm just about ready to ban guests from commenting due to some of the comments I've received recently. I'm not saying any of you are to blame, but still, comments asking about updates or complaints about jokes never help.

While I'm not giving up on Kirby Adventure (or Yoshi & Kirby, for that matter), it's still second priority compared to Let's Plays now. They're just a lot more fun for me to do, and that's what really matters. These various internet activities I've been doing haven't truly been about entertaining others, that was just an intended side-effect. What really mattered to me was that I was having fun doing it and entertaining myself.

Problem is, I'm just not having as much fun with this anymore.

I personally have seen no drop in quality. You're a great comic artist. Don't deny it. But, I understand completely. I just hope you get some of your motivation back. Best of luck to you, Ulti.

I understand this completely... remember my "disappearences?" They were due to the same thing happening. (Albeit, with different things distracting me... ) point is, I think everyone experiences loss of motivation at some point. It's just shifting interests. Heck, I'm starting to lose it with K:TDA. And I'm not even sure why.

However, having fun with it is the most important part of anything. (That's the problem with sports... nobody gets that.) While I'm sure nobody wants to see this comic end any time soon, (you included, maybe) it would be better for it to end than to suddenly start being boring to read, as these recent pages have been. (In my opinion, anyway...)

So whatever you decide to do will be completely ok with me! Good luck!

I enjoy your LPs at times, and yes, I haven't updated much recently either. (However, I was mostly lazy.)

I understand the fun being taken out of something, and how ideas can't be made due to reception and/or real like getting in the way. I still love both Kirby Adventure and ESPECIALLY Yoshi and Kirby, but I know that other things can get in the way.

Whether it's an LP or a comic, your work, in my opinion, is great.

Gosh, you are being the exactly oppositive of me. While I understand the lack of motivation (*coughKatMMcough*), this is something I can't imagine happening with 20TK. But don't worry, I hope it's not forever, and I'm pretty sure it's not. We just sometimes need do change what we do because we want, because of our interests. Trust me, this has already happened to me two times, but I did the wrong thing to abandon it completely. And now I miss doing those things, but it's too late to come back. So, no matter how you feel, no matter what happens, keep going. Maybe slowly, but keep going. We won't care (or at least we should not care) if you start updating slowly. And not just that, your new segment is about to start, and I'll be there to help you, when you always need. :3

Ultimate Yoshi: We all like a lot your comics and LPs, I just ask you to take your time and not let these comics die, and also make your LPs, (I just didn't watch the PM:TTYD and TLoZ:SS because I want to play them first), just take your time and don't forget about the comics. You're the best author of all comics I read.
