Escape!

Part 1

Ulti's Notes:

The third segment of Kirby Adventure begins, and finally, it is one focused on action! After all of the build-up of First Mission leading to an anti-climax and Average Days meandering around, this was not only a pay-off to readers hoping for combat, but also allowed for two important things to occur.

For one thing, combat meant that I could show off all of the characters' Stored Abilities in-comic, rather than just relegating them to supplemental cast page material. Secondly, it let me sneak in something that was actually relevant to any grander story.

The efforts of this blue Kirby, who's name gets revealed by the end of the segment (or by user comments lol) are the first in a larger scheme, and while none of this quite gets picked up on for a bit due to the focus on goofier misadventures in a general sense, overall Escape is arguably the first 'important' segment of the comic.

Original Author's Comment:

12/05/10
Yep, new segment.

Blue Kirby is taking matters into his own hands.

Vezo is walking backwards in the last panel.

Meep is fun to say.

Vezo will destroy him. If you've ever played Squeak Squad you'll see Cutter is way better than fighter.

Jarkes
12/05/10
@locoroco1:
Not really. Besides, Kirby games don't have a matchup thing for abilities, since Kirby's the only one to ever use them. It all really boils down to personal opinion.
(Although I do agree that Fighter is kind of lame in Squeak Squad... But Cutter's not all that great until you get the ability scroll.)
And seriously, WHAT IS THE BLUE KIRBY'S NAME?

Ultimate Yoshi
12/05/10
@Jarkes:
Not tellin'.
And for all those who HAVE commented saying his name, please don't. I wanna keep it a secret, or rather, as much of a secret I can keep it when it's already out on the internet somewhere.

@locoroco1:
This isn't Squeak Squad, it's Kirby Super Star Ultra. Plus, Vezo is a probie and not very adept at fighting. We'll see what happens.

@Ultimate_Yoshi:
How is it already out on the Internet when (presumably) you haven't told ANYONE?

Ultimate Yoshi

Because I made a drawing and included all of their names alongside each character. This blue Kirby was one of those characters.

Cutter is pretty powerful and since it's a projectile it could keep Fighter away from it until Fighter runs off or dies. However not sure if it could win against Fire since that's a projectile and he isn't experienced enough.

Made yet another batch of comic revisions. This page now has an extra gradient and changed up the first panel to work better with blue Kirby's character.

Part 2

Ulti's Notes:

If you click through the original and revised buttons, you'll see that the combat comics of Escape are quite different from my usual affair. I went back at a later date to revise them, like usual, in order to get them in-line visually with my typical standard. While I don't actively dislike the idea of a wilder and more variable panel layout, especially for a chaotic fight scene, my early implementation of it wasn't exactly up to quality standards, and ultimately standarizing it was a better call for this I think. Especially since after this segment, I never did panels like this again, making it quite a visual outlier.

Vezo, being an inexperienced newbie, goes down in a single page of combat, compared to everybody else. I think the interesting thing that I was able to achieve with this whole segment was how even when I was young, I knew that combat for combat's sake wasn't going to cut it or be that interesting. So, instead, I not only perpetuated a mystery of 'who is this dark blue Kirby and what does he even want', but also used the time to subtly establish the main cast just that little bit more.

Whether you realized it or not, the fight scenes did manage to tell you things about the various KAS characters, and that's worthwhile.

Original Author's Comment:

12/06/10
*GASP* WHAT- WHAT COULD THIS POSSIBLY BE???

I think it could possibly be my best fight scene ever.

Tough luck Vezo, but you had no chance of winning anyway.

It's one of your only fight scenes. Well, at least in this comic, anyway.

Also, I just noticed that Blue's (that's what I'm calling him for now, until his name is officially revealed) fighter headband is white. ...Why?

Djoing
12/06/10
Funfact: the red kirby in the games has a white headband when he uses fighter.

doesn't explain this, but it's a fun fact.

Ultimate Yoshi
12/06/10
@guestuser:
In this comic, sure. But in Yoshi & Kirby, I've had them battle the Ultimate Shy, Test, Naval Piranha, and King Dedede. This is by far my best presentation.

And why does it matter? Like I said on Y&K, I like minor recolors.

Ultizeta
05/19/17
Major revisions happened with Escape! No longer shall it be the odd-segment-out with it's wacky-paneled fight scenes. I debated keeping them and just making them look nicer, but I felt they'd fit in better with the rest of the comic if I made them look normal. Not to mention, some of the pages' legibility was severely under-prioritized for favor of wacky layouts anyway, so it's not as if they were the easiest and most enjoyable to read to begin with.

The tricky thing, though, is Past Ulti was not a very meticulous record-keeper with these fight scenes as he was for literally everything else. Basically what that means is that almost every one of these pages had to be recreated from scratch. It was an annoying process.

Anyways, you can see the original page and it's funky layout here.

Part 3

Ulti's Notes:

I'm gonna use this page where I don't have much to say to say that if I don't have anything to say going forward on certain pages, I simply won't have an Ulti's Notes section. I'm not gonna bother forcing myself to write new info on 700 pages, that's just unnecessary. If a page speaks for itself, then I'll leave it at that.

Original Author's Comment:

12/07/10
Yep, now he's fighting Keito.

Also, Mr. Darknut255:
STOP SAYING THE BLUE KIRBY'S NAME IN YOUR COMMENTS.
I WOULD THINK THE FACT THAT I KEEP DELETING THEM WOULD TIP YOU OFF THAT I DON'T WANT IT REVEALED. IF YOU KNOW IT ALREADY, THEN WHOOP-DE-DOO FOR YOU. BUT SHUT UP ABOUT IT WHEN YOU'RE ON SMACK JEEVES.

Ultizeta
05/19/17
lol I got so mad at DarkNut

Anyways all that happened here was dialogue revision.

Part 4

Ulti's Notes:

Having Keito and the blue Kirby be evenly matched was another bit of subtle character establishment. Keito is, as mentioned once already, the second-in-command of Kirby's Division of the KAS. I wanted to establish that despite his goofier antics and ambitions, he was still pretty competent and somebody worth respecting. Putting him on an even playing field, at least strength-wise, to this blue Kirby (who will proceed to defeat everybody he comes across) was a way I could sneakily improve Keito's reputation compared to the other Divison A Squadmembers.

Original Author's Comment:

12/08/10

Is the dark purple Kirby in the banner the "Fanhal" mentioned on Kaxo's profile? Also, when is he going to make his debut?

Ultimate Yoshi
12/09/10
@guestuser:
No, Fanhal isn't nearly going to be important enough to get placed on the banner.

guestuser
12/09/10
@Ultimate Yoshi:
Then... who's the dark purple Kirby? And by "not important," does that mean Fanhal's just going to be a minor character, like Wake?

Ultimate Yoshi
12/09/10
@guestuser:
Dark Purple Kirby is an upcoming character that I added so that when it appears, the banner will be up to date with all the important characters and I won't need to change it or something.

guestuser
12/15/10
In KSS, Beam is way better than Fighter.

guestuser
05/01/11
It's the background of Machine Mansion and the other machine-type level of Canvas Curse, if I am right.

TheJGamer

Smash Bros reference?

Ultizeta
05/19/17
Yay, less free paneling!

Lots of new zoom-ins were used here, as well as completely removing the original second panel which was completely useless.

Part 5

Ulti's Notes:

Honestly, the real question here isn't WHY would one use superglue to fix a ceiling, but rather, HOW would superglue even fix a ceiling to begin with?

As part of that aforementioned reputation-building for Keito, while he may be respectable in combat, the real method of defeating him is his hubris and planning. A strategist, he is not. He's a goof, so while not exactly a cloudcuckoolander like Caiya, he's far from the smart commander that he'd need to be to not get taken advantage of like this.

Original Author's Comment:

12/09/10
Really like how this turned out, especially the first three panels giving the illusion of a 'normal' comic, then the chaotic placement begins again.

Keito is down for the count, as he is stuck to the ceiling. Who knows who would've won if not for the superglue?

Well, I do, but still.

Before you say 'but why was there an explosion? And fire, for that matter?' in the comments, here is your answer:
WHY WOULDN'T THERE BE? :D Also, holy crap, I have 69 fans? How the heck is this that popular? (Also, no immature comments about that specific number. MATURE comments, on the other hand... *slapped*)

Ultimate Yoshi
12/10/10
@guestuser:
Wake has no SHOWN member file because he is an unimportant character. He is still part of the agency, however.

Silverlilly
12/11/10
@Ultimate Yoshi:
Wood is something that comes from trees when you cut them down. A nail is a sharp bit of metal.

Ultimate Yoshi
12/11/10
@Silverlilly:
And do you know what sarcasm is?

guestuser
12/12/10
Wood and nails are old news. Duct tape is where it's at.

Silence is golden. Duct tape is silver. And Keito is bronze.

(the user apoligizes for the immature reference.)

guestuser
01/10/11
Excuse me for being pathetic for not noticing this till now, but why is the room reversed from the last scene?

Ultimate Yoshi
01/10/11
@guestuser:
Originally, I was going to have one of the panels of this fight in Wake's viewpoint. However, this proved to be impossible concerning the background and everything. Since Wake is in a reversed perspective, the room was reversed as well. As I was making this I forgot to change it back to normal perspective, but I don't think it matters too much.

guestuser
07/06/11
Does anyone else notice that Keito moved from the right side of the room to the left?

Ultizeta
05/19/17
There's a reason for the random explosion now: comedic effect. I also cut out a panel of Keito getting kicked in the face, so that it doesn't happen two times in a row for no reason.

Part 6

Ulti's Notes:

What I like about this page is that it implies Kirby painted it very recently, as opposed to the longer while that the flashback in Average Days might've implied beforehand. And yet he still wanted to paint the other corridor.

Ultizeta
05/19/17
I rewrote the last two panels to be more in-character for blue Kirby, and had Saia visually react this time around. I also changed the gradient sidebars to add more contrast to the insanely painted corridor.

Part 7

Ulti's Notes:

Remember what I was saying about being able to use the fight scenes to help establish characters a bit more in subtle ways? Remember how I was also saying that I was struggling with figuring out how to depict Saia? Yeah, this isn't exactly the most accurate portrayal of her. Ulti's Notes:

Kaxo and Caiya randomly showed up here for no reason in the original comic. While they still sorta do so now, thanks to the bonus page I made for the end of Average Days, Shat'l now gives Kaxo a reason to at least be with Caiya while confronting the blue Kirby here. Just a little way I was able to retroactively add a bit more narrative cohesion to these early pages.

Ultizeta
05/19/17
Fixed the paneling yet again. All these effects were a PAIN to recreate. Past Ulti, why did you have to not save anything for these panels. Past Ulti, why.

Part 11

Ulti's Notes:

Unlike when I called Saia "Caia" and had to revise it, T calling Caiya "Saia" here was an intentional bit. It's a sort of joke on how the two names are basically identical (not one of my smarter moves), while also showing that T doesn't actually know them. Raize and Kaxo both mentioned both Saia and Caiya mid-fight, so T is just misremembering which one was which. Like many readers probably might.

Using the fight scenes to help build the characters of the main cast was useful, but that shouldn't ignore the subtle ways in which I also used it to establish the character of the blue Kirby here too. T is clever, highly aware and attuned to detail, and with some of my revisions, a crafty planner and highly-focused individual. He's snarky, confident, and a bit indulgent. It all comes together to make for an interesting antagonist character, I think.

I point it out here because this page is particularly interesting for T's character. He's being chased down, and while his goal is to find Hali, or potentially just get out of the base entirely, he doesn't run from this fight despite the exit being right behind him. Instead, he works out how to beat it, and never once considers leaving or hiding. It's just another way of character establishment that I bet a lot of people never really thought about.

Hah, see, I told you guys the funky paneling was hard to read. I actually forgot I had to remake the original version of this page because my layout was so unreadable you couldn't understand the flow of the panels. I don't think I have that version saved anywhere, but I do have the second version that the current version replaced.

Anyways, this is the last page I revised for this batch. I don't think I'm gonna be doing many more batches like this, though. After this point, most pages start to get to a certain degree of quality that I think I can leave alone. I'll be fixing up individual moments and issues that need to be reworked, but no more entire segments, I don't think.

guestuser
07/13/17
@Ultizeta:
Wouldn't the original panel be in pumpkin experience?

Part 13

Ulti's Notes:

While a good portion of the moves and attacks that all of the characters have been doing in this story segment are real moves (or variations of existing moves) from the Kirby series and the respective powers of each copy ability, the Fighter ability that T uses has no move like this white beam at all normally. Think of it as a sort of T special, I suppose.

The four Kirbies at the top, including Wake and Aika, are the 4 KAS members of Division C. They're not particularly important for a while, but this is noteworthy that they're included here. It's funny to me that I didn't make the second most important Division in the comic to be Division B, but instead C. There are 4 total divisions, going from A to D, and B barely gets any mention whatsoever.

This is one of the times when the comic revisions only wind up being for a dark-colored character's text. Every time Aika speaks in the comic will come with a revision, because as you can see from the original page, her text is nearly unreadable originally, and I was quite stubbornly not interested in fixing it for half a decade.

A new batch of updates, but these ones are more spread out. It's at this point in Kirby Adventure that I felt things started to get a bit more bearable, so I'm focusing more on important issues rather than tediously fixing effect fonts and slightly blurry border lines. No, all that's going to change from here on out are more glaring issues. This page's update was to fix Aika (purple)'s text bubble color so that it was more readable.

Part 14

Ulti's Notes:

As of this page, I no longer kept updating older pages, as this was the point where I felt like the quality of the original pages reached a consistent enough "good enough" qualtiy to them. They're still not exactly always the best (like that white beam in the previous page, not exactly an SFX masterpiece), but they're much more in-line with expectations of "my early work" while still not being absolute trash or completely out-of-character.

Part 15

Ulti's Notes:

Speaking of being absolute trash or completely out-of-character, don't ask what I was thinking with the fourth wall break in the original version of the page here. I think I was trying to channel the way Order of the Stick does stuff like that, with its self-aware meta humor, but it's so difficult to get that sort of thing right without breaking tone or immersion that I would tell any self-respecting author to avoid this sort of style of humor at all costs, before at least a good like decade of experience first.

And even then, with that experience, I feel like one is likely to just realize that it's not a great idea to just randomly throw in, lol

Original Author's Comment:

12/19/10

Mach Tornado is a powerful move used by the skilled swordsman Meta Knight, another well-known character from the Kirby series. Panel 5: "T"' derp face!

Part 20

Ulti's Notes:

T's remarks on how he is "THE Kirby" who has "beaten everyone" is mostly a comment related to my aforementioned, personal timeline for Kirby Adventure where the many Kirby games prior to Kirby Super Star Ultra all occured before Kirby Adventure. King Dedede and Meta Knight have been shown or mentioned before in annotations, and are well-known and formidable opponents in their own right.

Dark Matter, meanwhile, is a recurring evil villain in various early Kirby titles, most notably Kirby's Dream Land 2 for the Game Boy and Kirby's Dream Land 3 for the SNES. He's typically depicted as a black orb with an eyeball, and orange dots. He seeks to destroy positive emotion, and often possesses heroic characters (especially King Dedede). Kirby defeated him with the power of good feelings and helping people, via a Rainbow Sword and a magic cane known as the Love-Love Stick.

"Everyone else" is just to avoid listing out the final boss of every other Kirby game in one text bubble.

Part 21

Ulti's Notes:

Wake shouts the word "NEON!" when T ambushes the group because that was the name of the sprite sheet I created for the neon-pink Kirby character. The neon-pink and brown Kirbies in Division C didn't yet have names, and in my whim brilliance, I decided that Neon itself could simply be the name of the neon Kirby. I would later amend her name to being Neona, Neon for short, but this may be, like, the only time that nickname of Neon got used.

Stars are a common iconography in the Kirby series, and in the games where Kirby has Copy Abilities, if he drops an ability, it bounces around in the form of a yellow star for a bit before vanishing. If that star gets re-inhaled, Kirby can reclaim the dropped ability. If Kirby takes a large hit of damage while having an ability, the ability star can also get dropped unintentionally, as if the enemy knocked the power out of them.

That's what happened with T's Fighter power in the fourth and fifth panels. Aika flung T across the room, and all of the damage he had taken thus far led to it being enough that his Fighter ability was knocked out of him. Thus, an ability star was left behind, and it promptly vanished by the sixth panel.

Original Author's Comment:

All that happened here was fixing Aika's text colors again.

Part 22

Ulti's Notes:

I've talked about before how Shat'l's future sight and near-omnipotence hinders a lot of the plot, since if he can see anything, and with the friends at his disposal and their own personal powers (like world-renowned heroism, teleportation, elemental abilities, etc) nothing bad should ever happen with his omnipotence.

While meta-textually, this doesn't happen because it'd be a bad story, and Shat'l's powers are really only as omnipotent as I make them out to be (or I remember to make them), in-universe it is actually a bit funny to think about the other alternative: that Shat'l had foreseen that, somehow, someway, the world would be worse-off if he DIDN'T let himself get trampled by T running out the door here.

Second panel is the best. xD

Wouldn't be a proper escape if you stopped and worried about every poor soul in your way, whether they are your target or not.

Hehehe, ya think if Shat'l is a psychic that he'd see that coming... guess they can't see everything.. XD

Anyways, good comic!

I like the comic, the only thing I would suggest is a character page.

There's way too many names to remember.

Edit; I'm blind. There IS a character page. Sorry about the misconception.

It's hard to remember the names, divisions and organizations.

Part 23

Ulti's Notes:

Fanhal will come up again eventually, so I'll talk about him at a later point. For now, the reveal of Talzo's full name and background marks the conclusion of Escape! It essentially is just a glorified set-up segment, but it's a fun enough one looking back. It adds to some of the main cast's characterizations and reputation, it does a great job at presenting a main antagonist (especially after Average Days almost accidentally neutered his engagement), and for a sprite comic, the combat isn't half bad.

Original Author's Comment:

12/27/10
TALZO!!!
THAT'S HIS NAME, YOU HAPPY NOW????

Well, Talzo's escaped, so logically, the Escape! segment is over now that he's actually explained.

Fun fact: I actually didn't want to make a new Kirby sprite sheet recolor for Fanhal, so that's actually Neon from two comics ago. Hey, sometimes grayscaled flashbacks can be helpful!

WE CAN USE HIS NAME NOW! EXUBERANCE!
...wait, if Talzo got himself kicked out, why does he want to revenge himself on the Squad? Did he feel his expulsion was wrong? Why was Fanhal picked to assist in getting rid of him? Why is Shadik just standing there? Why am I asking you all these questions? Find out next time on-*shot*

WHERE do you get these names?

Talzo = 'T' = That dark blue Kirby who can beat up everyone.

BattleStarX

Half the difficulty of having so many kirbies is coming up with the names. There's only so many names you can make before your brain goes *POP*.

Talzo... I agree with 96. Where do you come up with these names?

Talzo doesn't even feel a bit guilty? :O
