Ulti's Notes:
Izzy the Plasma Wisp returns here, but his girlfriend Jazzy never shows up again after To the Tower. Her absence wasn't particularly intentional or anything, but after a certain point of realizing that I had continued using Izzy but not Jazzy, I did come up with a dumb reason for why that was the case.
It never got addressed in-comic, but between To the Tower and Helping Hand, I wound up making Izzy a bit goofier and hyper compared to the more chill personality he seemed to have in his few TTT pages. So, my dumb thought for why his personality changed, and where Jazzy went, was that the two of them tried to kiss, and merged into one single plasma being that acted like a mix of both Wisps.
It's honestly not a bad idea, all things considered.

So here's the thing about HAND: It was intended to be a sort of... like, alternative adventuring group alongside the four KAS divisions. A bunch of non-Kirby characters to explore missions with on occasion. Since they would have a greater variety of designs, it was in my head only opening up potential opportunity for me to tell different stories.
The problem was, HAND had zero relevancy in any capacity. The group was a clone of the KAS, except with having non-Kirby members. Ultimately, there was nothing that HAND could achieve that the KAS couldn't also do, and unlike the other 3 Divisions of the KAS, there wasn't really room to include the characters in minor recurring roles around the KAS base with HAND, since HAND was unaffiliated with the KAS.
Essentially, this just meant that this entire segment was dedicated to introducing a group of characters who pretty much never show up again after this, which is why it's so largely irrelevant and awkward.
Anyways, as far as annotations go: I purposefully misspelled Dream Landers as a single word (which is a common misspelling) in order to get the acronym HAND to work. The acronym came before the fleshed out name, so I tried to figure out how to get words to fit the letters of H, A, N, and D after the fact.
The term 'Helper' refers to certain enemies from Kirby Super Star and Ultra who are representatives of their Copy Ability they provide. Kirby in the games can use his ability to summon a second character, either CPU controlled or 2nd Player controlled, and the creature summoned depends on whichever ability Kirby had at the time. Since I was using HAND as an excuse to throw together a team of non-Kirby characters, I tried to pull together as many pre-existing characters I had already used before. This is why the Izzy and Jarkes cameos showed up here, and why I elected to include Tazmi the Gordo and Rocky, both seen in brief appearances during The Beginning segment.
Pretty much none of the characters really had much personality to them. Even Tazmi was more of a role than a character, in the grand scheme of things. Izzy and Jarkes were the only ones who managed to have any sort of identity in the long run, and everyone else was basically just forgettable and useless.
And if you were curious: No, I have no idea what Rocky's "real name" is supposed to be.

This was all entirely based on Jarkes the guest's comments back during To the Tower. Due to the somewhat rushed aspect of that segment, especially in its conclusion, Jarkes wasn't able to get all of his cameo-related ideas into the comic proper.
I had all of his ideas still on my brain, especially since it was still within a year of that segment being written, so when I decided to bring Jarkes back, I elected to throw Jarkes the guest a bone and write the character's inclusion around some of the thoughts the guest had tried to pitch me beforehand.

When I make background sheets, I copy and paste the backgrounds underneath the foregrounds, save it all as one big image, and so I typically don't have to spend extra time getting individual sheets of background and foreground. Sometimes, though, problems arise with foregrounds that aren't meant to be vertically scrolling, such as this one. When that happens, I typically just try to ignore it. I actually did try and do something different for this background, and vertically flip the background image for one row, then flip it back to normal for the next row, but it seems I forgot to do it on the lowest row.
I'm also surprised that you didn't notice this earlier. I've been doing it this way since The First Mission. It was most noticable in Jetting Across The Ice, in the Navo fight/Zkyan fight room.

Ulti's Notes:
When scouring through older characters I could bring into HAND, the Blade and Sword Knight pair of Lyze and Lil from the end of To the Tower were two characters who stood out to me. Since that segment's conclusion was rushed, I never wrote in what actually happened to the pair.
Unlike Wiz, who was shattered into pieces, Fusion Kirby who got jailed, and all of the minibosses who got frozen into statues, Lyze and Lil just stopped existing after Shadik broke everybody out of their cage. Thus, their current predicament was open-ended.
While logically, they would've been captured alongside FK and the others, I decided to write that they had somehow escaped imprisonment and fled the Tower. Whatever happened to Lil the Sword Knight is entirely unknown, she never reappeared or was mentioned again. Lyze, however, I gave a new coat of paint and threw him into HAND.
Was he trying to turn over a new leaf? Was he simply there to hide? Was he trustworthy, was he a traitor? In the end, these were ideas that I was leaving myself open to writing, if I ever did anything further with the HAND cast. And guess what I never did? Anything further with the HAND cast.
So Lyze and his "Iltei" disguise were basically just yet another example of this segment introducing stuff that was largely irrelevant.

Yeah. From memory, here's its moveset:
1- Spear Stab
1+1- Rapid Spear Stab
1+1+1- Rapid Spear Stab into a finishing stab
Up+1- Up Stab (works in midair too)
Hold 1- Heli-Spear
Down+1 in midair- Spear slam downward (like Meta's Down+B in Meta Knightmare)
Dash Attack- Spear Throw
Dash+Hold 1- Spear Throw x3 (throws three spears at once)
It plays a lot like Sword, but without the spinning slash. It's also a lot more offensive, and has a projectile which isn't limited to working at full health.

Some people assumed that because Lyze thought "I am so lucky" in proximity to Shat'l, it meant that he either was disingenuous about being a good guy now, or that Shat'l would notice and call him out on it.
In actuality, I intended it to be a situation of Lyze thinking "Oh, I was about to get horribly beat up, I'm so lucky one of them stood up for me", rather than "Oh, I am so lucky, I actually am Evil but he's arguing in my defense anyway". Shat'l did hear Lyze's thought, but also interpreted it as the former and not the latter.
Point being, Lyze's allegiance was still up-in-the-air, to be determined by a future Ulti that never wound up existing. This was not a confirmation of anything, one way or the other, just relief at not getting beaten to a pulp.

Ulti's Notes:
I hid my Ultimate Kirby sona in the background of Panel 5 because this was the 250th page of Kirby Adventure. It otherwise has no bearing on anything else.
Navo J2 being a separate entity from NAVO J1 was me trying to add a bit of intrigue into the character I created last segment who I didn't care for. This did wind up helping me out with NAVO J1, in the long run, because it gave me an important way to expand his characterization. For now, though, I won't say much more on it, aside from the fact that Navo J2 is arguably the most worthwhile character to have resulted out of this Helping Hand segment, even if I still didn't actively use Navo J2 much.

A recolored Kirby sprites is considered acceptable by basically everyone, whereas a recolored Sonic sprite rarely is. I think it's because Kirby sprites are used so much less than Sonic sprites that Kirby fans learn to accept what they get :P

Actually, I'd say recolors in the Kirby sprite industry are accepted because the GAMES themselves use recolors up the wazoo. Kirbies, Enemies, heck, I swear some of the backgrounds and fields are nothing but recolors themselves. Unlike in, say, Sonic Games, where most things are one color, and that's that.
And that's why we don't get the nasty messages about our recolors.

Ulti's Notes:
Vezo's backstory was developing further in my head, and so I decided that Yiel would be another good inclusion to the comic. The annoying thing here, though, is that I think in retrospect, Kiina already added enough mystery to Vezo. Yiel didn't really add much on his own, and since I didn't utilize Yiel much, there wasn't really much merit to his inclusion.
Outside of the cameos, Yiel was still probably the most utilized HAND character, but it was more out of necessity than active worth.

And see, like, this actively sucks here, because this is such a non-story. Because my intent was just to introduce HAND in this segment, at the barest minimum, that was all I set out to achieve.
A proper story would've at least, like, tried to have some sort of mission for the group to go on with some HAND members, tell a fun little shenanigan that actually let the HAND characters exist and gain a personality and show things off. But instead, once the characters are seen once, I called that "good enough" and abruptly ended the segment. It was... frankly awful.
It's reasons like this that make this the dark age of Kirby Adventure writing. I don't think I quite realized how I was struggling at the time, ultimately I think I was so focused on ideas for future segments that I was letting myself stagnate and not trying as hard as I should have for the current segments.
In a sense, Kirby's annoyance and snark and sense of frustration that he was developing during these segments was also, in a way, a representation of my own inner frustrations. Trying to figure out how to write comics and forcing myself to upkeep KA, while not actually understanding that I needed a break or time to work things out. Ah, the things you don't realize when you're young.
A proper story would've at least, like, tried to have some sort of mission for the group to go on with some HAND members, tell a fun little shenanigan that actually let the HAND characters exist and gain a personality and show things off. For some reason, I think that Talzo will not be involved in this segment. Probably because Talzo already appeared in the last segment, do you really think he'll appear so soon again? Besides, Ulti said that Mr. Red-Eyes (that's what I'm going to call him) won't appear for a while. Since Talzo is associated with Mr. Red-Eyes, I doubt he will return this soon.
