Tree to Tree, a segment named after a song from the 2011 DS game Kirby Mass Attack, was yet another attempt of mine to recapture the 'magic' of To the Tower. After Jetting Across the Ice failed, I tried to pinpoint particular reasons why, and what I decided were its initial issues was the location and amount of characters. Honestly, it was good on me to realize that, but unfortunately that wasn't quite enough, either.

Regardless, though, to solve the issue that JAtI had, I decided to send the Squad to a different location from the Great Cave Offensive, the subgame where the Old Tower area came from. Instead of the Tower, I chose the Sub-Tree area to have them explore next.

I think this is the fourth time I've used that 'holding a letter and reading it' type of panel. First two times in To The Tower, third in The Beginning..., and fourth now. Maybe I'm missing a time? Who knows!

When I looked at your avatar, I honestly thought that I was looking at a picture from the anime. Then I realized that I wasn't.

Poor DarkNut255. While their comments often pressured me into updating some of my other comics through incessant begging, they were still a longtime and active fan of the comic, and yet their cameo here, Kiblar the silver Sir Kibble, was severely shafted during this segment.

The character was a cowardly, shy knight who hoped to prove himself. I never really used the character, though, mostly just focusing on the cowardly aspect. The real issue, though, was how the plot of this segment got horribly usurped.

Part of my solution to trying to recapture the 'magic' of To The Tower was... well, you can see it here to start. I retread a lot of ground, including bringing back charaters from it unnecessarily. FP had no business being here at all, and I wound up focusing on him instead of the actual new cameo character who was supposed to be the focus of the segment. FP could be fun, but it was way too attention-grabbing, and hindered the writing a lot.

Hey who threw a gun at my face?

Another problem with the segment was that I didn't really learn my lesson yet about having a proper goal in mind. I was still operating under "have funny shenanigans as they try to get to their goal" writing, while having the goal be too ambiguous and awkward.

Trying to find one single chest in the area was directionless, and thus, the plot couldn't really progress, not unless I incorporated the chest into something else. And while I DO wind up doing that, it's way too little, too late, as you'll wind up seeing.

To my knowledge, Caiya is annoying Kaxo, Kaxo grabs her to do something violent, but accidently pulls her on top of him squishing him. Then instead of getting off, Caiya falls asleep. Then in this comic, Kaxo throws her off him, and Saia looks at Kaxo disapprovingly because he threw her into a wall.

HA!!! FP's as funny as Saito!!!

This is a repeat gag from when Kirby said the same stuff to FP, before entering a dead-end room with a wooden stake. The gag is mostly the dead-end part.

When Kirby enters water in the games, he spontaneously gains a snorkel and goggles. They're simply cosmetics, so him suddenly getting them here is just based on the game mechanics.

Lava in Kirby games is treated like a simple hazard that deals a bit of damage, as opposed to instantly killing a character from touch, or burning them from a close distance like real-life lava. So, Caiya here is fine, just a bit temporarily-singed.

"Mary Sue" is a colloquial term used to describe/define fan characters (or official characters) who: A. Do everything right, B. All the characters love this character, C. Sometimes used as a mouthpiece for the author to express his or her views on anything, D. Have no apparent flaws, and/or E. Exists so that the author can pair herself (it's usually a female author when this happens) with the main character of a series, or another character in the series, and demonize all the other characters who could have potential relationships with that character. This one's an "and/or" because that's not always the case. Perfect example from an official, best selling work: Bella Swan. Keep in mind, these are generalizations, and not all OCs (Original Characters) are Mary Sues or representations of the author. For that matter, not all Mary Sues fit all of these criteria.

Now, regarding your character. The only criteria she really fits are the "Newest Division A recruit" (which is established in-story as being incredibly hard to do) and the fact that the "Personality" bit has no character flaws. That's it, though. I'm NOT accusing you of criteria C and E.

After my 15th birthday, I got a new laptop and it took me a while to get Photoshop on the computer for me to make new comic pages with. This prompted a two month break, which I think gave me a good amount of time away from the comic. It didn't quite help the segment, though, because I think it also threw me off my game on what was already a subtly struggling plot.

When I got a new computer back in 2012, my text settings were changed. It took me a bit to figure out how to get it to look the way it used to, and in the meantime I just put up with different looking text for a few pages. Now, I can go back and fix these pages to have consistent-looking text.

I hope you'll get back to your other comics soon too. BTW.: Losing Photoshop is not an excuse. There's lot of other free gfx software. You can even make comics in paint (given you don't need anything too fancy like rotation). But best graphics software, even better than Photoshop is GIMP which you can download for free @gimp.org. If you don't like windows floating around, you may use GIMP's fork called GIMPshop - all functions of GIMP in photoshop-like ui.

The creature behind Saia that Caiya is mistaking for a donut is a tree-based enemy known as a Jungle Bomb. I think they're based on pineapples, which calls to mind grenades, thus: bombs. They come from the Sub-Tree area in Kirby Super Star.

Even though Kirby Adventure began in 2010, and the timeline of the comic was still based on it being around the same time as the latest Kirby game at that point, 2008's Kirby Super Star Ultra, that didn't stop me from aiming to include new things where I could. Thus, here we see a Beanbon from 2011's Kirby Mass Attack, a game that had released only a couple months prior to these pages.

Mass Attack is a game set on the Popopo Islands, an archipelago on the southern side of Planet Popstar. It's much more tropical (at least, some of the islands are), and instead of Waddle Dees being the most common enemy creature encountered, instead the Beanbon was. It's basically a plant-like replacement for the Waddle Dee.

Despite me using Mass Attack content here, I still wanted to establish the timeline I was consistently using. Thus, this still took place before Kirby Mass Attack, and thus, Kirby was unaware of anything that game actively introduced to the Kirby series. So this is (in this canon) his first introduction to Beanbons.

It's kind of annoying that I can't just erase the text, but instead I have to remake all the text bubbles too. Apparently I didn't bold the non-pixelated Tahoma font when using it, which makes all the proper-looking bolded pixelated Tahoma font not fit into the old text bubbles.

Xyxxa is a name that was basically a borderline parody of my own naming conventions and love of hard uncommon consonants. I pronounced it "zicks-uh", but regardless, she didn't show up enough for it to really be an issue anyway.

Xyxxa is a Helmee, another Kirby Mass Attack enemy. They're ghosts possessing knight helmets, and can wield either spears or lanterns. I picked one to be Banai's partner here because I just simply liked the design a lot.

For what it's worth, I also intended these two to be lesbians, which was why I put emphasis on both characters being girls. But it didn't amount to even an in-comic mention, so my LGBT representation was unaffected by this. Don't worry, though, nowadays basically all of the characters and their reimaginations are openly queer.

Nope, they're my fifth LP that took place after I finished Nightmare In Dream Land. They're a series of games my friend on Skype made, he asked me if I could LP one, so I decided to LP them all. I feel like Hasbro shouldn't have made the edits to Derpy, cause that was just plain unnecessary, and I hate how Hasbro seems to not really be appreciating the fanbase in terms of how much of a demographic we are. Covering up Derpy in The Last Roundup was essentially saying how a disability is bad and that those with them shouldn't participate in everyday society.

Then again, I don't want to make a big deal out of it, considering how lucky we were to even have Derpy for a moment in any given episode be named and have lines. Besides, it was just for The Last Roundup, anyway.

And we still have the unedited version of the episode on the Friendship Express DVD, and the unedited version of the episode is also probably still up on YouTube, so we can always watch it in one of those places.

On an unrelated note, do you think Nintendo should remake Kirby 64 for the 3DS? I mean, it already has enemies attacking you from the background, so it actually would make perfect sense... but then again, it would be better if it were just a brand new Kirby game, since the remakes of Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and Rayman 2 were probably enough as far as N64 remakes go. Well, okay, Rayman 3D was actually ported from the Dreamcast version, but you get what I'm saying.

The last panel made me chuckle. Kirby the thief. I'd like to see him as a Ninja-thief.

I say Thief A stole something successfully. Thief A got careless because of his success, so Thief B was able to snatch it without breaking sweat while Thief A celebrated. Thief B was so thrilled about stealing from a stealer, but he did not give credit to his girlfriend who actually told him about item he wanted to smuggle. He was planning to take all the money and not share a penny. That's when the girlfriend—knowing her boyfriend's strengths and weaknesses—was able to dress in disguise—as Thief C—and snatch it from Thief B without leaving a trace. Thief B did not win, nor did Thief A ever see his item again. The End. =p

So, to answer your question: I call it deception, immoral…and pokémon luck.

Hey, I need some advice. I don't have Mass Attack OR Return to Dream Land yet (I know, shocker, right?). For a number of reasons, I can't buy them both at once. Which one should I get first? I'm leaning towards Mass Attack, mainly because for Return to Dream Land, I'd be playing solo most of the time (seriously, why doesn't the game have Wi-fi in case you don't have time to invite three of your friends over?). What do you think?

There's also the fact that I really want to increase the amount of 3DS games I have. I'm planning to buy a new game sometime this week, but, given that I'm in college and have a pretty big workload, I can only really buy one new game every so often. I'm debating between Mario Kart 7, Star Fox 64 3D, and Tales of the Abyss, and there's also the fact that, again, I don't have KMA or KRtDL yet. I'm having serious indecision issues here.

Who fed you that ficiticious information? Extra Mode is just as easy as Normal, especially since you remember where all the Gears are and can collect them on your first playthrough.
The diminished healthbar and harder bosses make up for that, though, but it's still not much harder than Normal.

I have less 3DS games than you, and I'm still good. I haven't even beaten OoT 3D yet.
Well, not all the way. I *think* I 100%'ed Normal, but I'm stuck on the Spirit Temple in MQ.

I'd advise getting RtD.

I ended up getting RtDL. It's pretty good so far. I've already beaten the entire first world, Energy Spheres included.

...BUT, in order to get it, I had to ignore the fact that my local GameStop actually had a used copy of the Wii Metroid Prime Trilogy compilation, and had it for a much lower price than I'd find it elsewhere. But I had already made up my mind. But don't worry, I'm not blaming you or anything. Sometimes you just gotta choose.

...By the way, which is harder? The KSSU True Arena, or the RtDL True Arena?

The RtD True Arena is about half as hard as the KSSU True Arena, at least judging by the number of times I died before beating it.

Hey, I have a question. In order to get 100% on RtDL Normal Mode, do I have to get Gold Medals in the Copy Ability Challenges and beat the three levels of both sub-games, as well as the Arena?

For 100%, for one thing, The Arena is a separate entity, not part of the save file. Neither are the sub-games, I don't think, but I already had them beaten when I got 100% so I wouldn't know. But I know for a fact that you need to at least have gotten a Bronze medal for every Ability Challenge.

Okay, then. By the way, why did no one warn me that Egg Engines was a MASSIVE difficulty spike? Seriously, in the second level, in order to get the second Energy Sphere, you have to bring a Stone ability from one room into another, which is filled with water and these HUGE spiked wheels which are GUARANTEED to knock the ability out of you (and since you're in water, you can't suck it back up), and you have to take it ALL THE WAY THROUGH THIS ROOM, and jump up in a tiny area where you're supposed to go into stone form and slam into otherwise unbreakable blocks and get the Energy Sphere. Seriously, why did no one warn me about this?

Egg Engines was certainly harder than Nutty Noon, but it wasn't a severe difficulty spike. If anything, the difficulty spike comes along when you fight Landia the dragon. And there have always been puzzles in Kirby games like that. You think THAT'S bad? Have you even TOUCHED Kirby's Dream Land 2 before?

Okay, it was a SMALL difficulty spike, mainly because of the sharp increase of giant cannons that either shoot fire or electricty (including one Energy Sphere where you have to put yourself in the line of fire of two cannons in order to get). And no, I haven't played Dream Land 2. I HAVE, however, played Dream Land 3, and some of the Heart Stars in that can be pretty brutal. I was stuck at level 5 of Cloudy Park (the one where you have to take Rick to the end of the level in order to get the Heart Star) for MONTHS before I got past it. And IIRC, I'm currently at the second level of Iceberg, not because that level's particularly difficult (in fact, I haven't even attempted the level yet), but because I just... haven't played the game in a while (I intend to get back to it at some point, probably when I'm finished with Return to Dream Land). I'm also currently at the beginning of Neo Star on Kirby 64. I actually have both of these games on the Virtual Console.

Huh... I thought Egg Engines was bad... turns out, Dangerous Dinner is SO much worse... but, about one hour ago, I managed to get the last Energy Sphere, AND get a Silver Medal in the Item Challenge! Now all I have left (in the Normal mode, anyway) is the Landia, Lor Starcutter, and Magolor boss fights. ...And that's where you said the REAL difficulty spike was... Joy.

Do I have to do all of those boss fights in one go, or does the game save in between each one?

Hello? That's why there is a bomb box!!

This was about the point where FP, a typically-silly and goofy character, started to become utterly flanderized and ridiculous. While most commenters seemed to enjoy it, it wasn't a transition I'm particularly proud of, since it grounds the character less and makes him feel even more out-of-place.

You can also see how I was struggling a bit with writing the plot. Since I hadn't made my realization about the whole 'destination/goals' thing yet, I was still just having characters wander around and doing unimportant stuff, and it was wreaking havoc on my pacing.

While more jokes during this segment aged better than I remembered, it's still ultimately meaningless in too many ways. Characterization doesn't evolve (and for some, it degrades), plot goes nowhere, and large swathes of the segment winds up being largely irrelevant. It's not well-written, plain and simple.

You can see how Kiblar was really getting the short end of the stick around here. Within his own segment, not only FP stole away the spotlight with his extroverted goofiness, but then I usurped his chest-search with Banai and Xyxxa for no real reason.

It was extra annoying because the pair of thieves basically gave Kirby a quest of "find our stolen thing", which... already was the plot of the segment?? So I just duplicated the plot for no reason, and then threw in this unrelated teleportation thing for good measure, because I had no idea what I was really writing and was floundering behind-the-scenes.

I BEAT DREAM LAND 3 TODAY! I actually managed to do the entire second phase of the Zero battle (where it rips out its iris... very freaky) with literally one hitpoint remaining. Of course, I've still got the Minigame rush, the jumping minigame, and the Boss Butch before I have 100%... but you know what? I'm gonna take a break from that. Now, onward to finishing Kirby 64!

Kirby's slowly becoming more Caiya-ish.

Nova was a large, clockwork star who granted wishes. He is from Kirby Super Star's Milky Way Wishes subgame, in which the evil Marx tricks Kirby into summoning the wishing star in order to steal Kirby's wish for himself. Marx usurps Kirby's wish once Nova is summoned, and wishes to control Planet Popstar. Kirby is having none of that in-game, though, and proceeds to enter the gigantic clockwork star and destroy Nova from the inside-out, before then taking the fight directly to Marx (and winning).

The background utilized here is indeed taken from the boss fight against Nova's inner workings, known in the games as either Heart of Nova or Galactic NOVA Nucleus. Normally, there are pillars to attack that represent Nova's life-force, but here, it's just the background layer being shown off.

Surprisingly, my previous comment is still somehow relevant.

And Kirby, did you really have to say that? It's so cliché.

This was, blatantly, me running entirely out of ideas and trying to desperately cobble things together.

Wiz returning from To the Tower had no bearing on anything, and was intended to be a cool "whoa!" moment, but even then, nobody in the comments was particularly impressed. Even in the moment, this was something that failed, and I think that hit me hard at the time, because the segment just takes a very swift nosedive immediately following this.

What? Ugh...he's really not the, um, "guy," I was hoping for.

This is something that I believe I mentioned earlier in To the Tower's annotations, but to reiterate: I completely made this up about Wiz for absolutely no reason. This is not an attribute Wiz ever has in the one game appearance he got.

He also teleported between sentences in Panel 3 when Kirby tried to slash him, but funnily enough, despite being a magician, he also never has the ability to teleport in the games either. I just loved making things up about Wiz, apparently.

Any tips on how to get past stage 4 of Shiver Star in Kirby 64? Freaking descending ceiling keeps killing me because I can't tell what spots are safe to stand on... Not to mention, there's still a couple sections of that level AFTER that section... fun... I've already acquired the first two shards, but I can't GET to the third shard because of that freaking descending ceiling section.

Yes, I plan on eventually 100%ing every single Kirby game in the main series. I may also do a few side games, like Kirby's Avalanche or Kirby Air Ride.

Edit: My friend Torkirby says to keep trying and you'll learn which areas are safe. He says that section is trial and error. I'll take his word for it!

Okay, cool. Also, don't you find it weird that Dream Land 2 retains your lives when you turn off the game and go back to it, but Dream Land 3 and 64 (directed by the same person as 2) don't? Actually, I think DL2 might be the only Kirby game that retains your accumulated lives.

Also, I only have one part left of your DL2 LP. I just finished watching the Bonus Chance Rush video. Have you ever noticed that LP's are funnier when the LPer is failing?

Also, I'm a little confused as to how often you use savestates, and how often you just skip all the way back to the part where you had just messed up.

EDIT: Okay, apparently you uploaded an extra video to the playlist while I was in the middle of watching that one. Huh.

I also noticed that, in your Kirby's Nightmare In Dream Land LP, not only could I barely hear the game audio, but the audio was out of sync with the visuals.

My Let's Plays before Kirby's Dream Land 2 all have some quirk, oddity, or deformity. Mega Man 2 had no voice commentary, Yoshi's Island had the game audio really high and I was really quiet, Kirby's Dream Land had audio desync and non-widescreen when it shouldve been widescreen, Nightmare In Dream Land had some desycn as well, as well as some non-widescreen-ness, and some badly exported videos in Butter Building and Grape Garden, Tiger Paw Studios was me testing a new microphone, so it sounded a bit odd, and Super Mario Star Road really was the only LP of mine before KDL2 where nothing in editing really went wrong at all.

I've started watching your Super Mario Star Road LP... were there ever any moments where you wanted to say, "Screw it! I'm checking a guide!" and then do so?

Also, is Bomberman 64 on the Virtual Console? I know Bomberman Hero is, but I'm not sure if that's related to Bomberman 64 and Bomberman 64: The Second Attack (is that what it's called?) besides all of them being on the N64. And if I recall correctly, all of them are brutally hard.

Nosedive, part 1: Instead of a dramatic confrontation continuing between Wiz and Kirby, or even a fight at all, instead, FP just randomly showed up, because... well, the drama failed entirely, so I fell back on lolhumor since I had no other fallbacks.

Now, normally, you guys would be stuck with zero updates for the next few days. Normally, I'd say I'm on vacation, and you'd just have to suffer without updates for a few days or a week.

But you know what? Screw it, I've got a laptop now. The Kirby Adventure Squad waits for no vacation!

Three words for FP, WHAT THE MOUSTACHE?

Nosedive, part 2: "Oh no, bringing back Wiz failed to garner positive attention, and I don't know what to do with him anymore!! Let's just end it immediately with Caiya."

Like, it's just so... unconfident. I didn't hold my ground, I didn't try to at least do something worthwhile with this stuff. The moment my rough ideas were met with resistance under any level, I just folded and gave up. It wasn't a great idea to begin with, but at least previous segments tried to follow through on their rough ideas. First with Helping Hand and now here in Tree to Tree, I just lacked the willpower and energy to upkeep these things, and it really shows.

I almost laughed in the middle of homeroom. "DONUUUUUT!" HAHAHAHAHAHA

Wiz being an illusionist, for the record, is also completely made up for the comic. But I guess giving him extra magic abilities like illusions and teleportation isn't completely out-of-nowhere, given it's magical in nature. I'm only really bringing these up for annotation purposes, not for criticism purposes.

Believe me, I'll criticize things where it's worth doing so, you've already been seeing it.

You kill me FP

Aaaand nosedive, the third and final: This was me just giving up entirely. I wrote the segment off as a failure, gave up, and just abruptly concluded it after an equally-abrupt interruption from Wiz, who was entirely unrelated to anything else going on here.

Kiblar never got to do anything, Banai and Xyxxa never got to do anything, Wiz had nothing to do with anything, the only character who got to do much was FP and even then he just devolved into speaking nonsense and deriving humor out of that. It was... so rough.

It's a shame, because in theory, there's something truly salvagable within here. Have Kiblar's treasure held hostage by Banai and Xyxxa, work out the trade of this random gemstone with the chest and the crew going to find that, and give the gemstone to Wiz (maybe powering his magic or something?) Now there's a plot, a reason for Wiz to be involved, and a clear goal for the Squad to unite behind, and everybody gets to be involved in some fashion.

It's not an unworkable segment, and I think that's why it's, in my opinion, still the worst segment of Kirby Adventure. On its own, it may not be the worst idea, but compared to what it could've been, it's the least living up to its potential even for the time of writing it.

Oh well, at least it's over, and I don't have to annotate it anymore. I can leave it in the past for good now. Next up, though... hah, god, it's like a neverending punch of rough times. Tear in the Fabric was the next segment, and boy was that a unique kind of doozy.

I need which-game-should-I-get advice again. Should I get Kirby Mass Attack, one of the 3DS games I mentioned last time (Star Fox 64 3D or Tales of the Abyss; I've decided that I really don't want Mario Kart 7 at all), or Kid Icarus Uprising (which has replaced Mario Kart 7 on my "most-wanted 3DS games" list)? I'm leaning towards Mass Attack, and then asking for one or more of the 3DS ones for my birthday (which is in June), but I'm not sure. Even then, I'm not going to be buying one of these games until early May, once finals are all said and done with (yes, in college (or at least my college), finals are done in EARLY May).

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Is it true that it's extremely hard to get 100% in Mass Attack? I heard that it has an Achievement system of sorts, and one of the "Achievements" is to play through every single level without getting hit once. Not necessarily never getting hit in the entire game, just playing through each level over and over until you can get through it without getting hit. At least, that's what I think it was...

So, in this particular case, the "Achievements" actually DO count towards the percentage? From what I understand, on most Xbox 360 and PS3 games (I just have a Wii and 3DS), the Achievements, while nice, don't count towards a game's already existing completion percentage (if the game tracks it, that is).
