Jetting Across the Ice was a segment that, in retrospect, showed me the formula problems I had with this comic, at least in the 'ideal' form I was envisioning taking the comic in. It was the first of a few attempts at recapturing the 'magic' of the To The Tower segment, and it was the first in a line of failures at that.

Of course, part of the problem is that To the Tower wasn't particularly magical to begin with, it had its issues in pacing, progression, and character usage, but what made it more fun was the simpler vibes of the earlier pages. The more I grew out of that early wackiness, the less viable the To the Tower format was in general.

For now, though, the problems aren't exactly obvious, especially seeing as, y'know, the segment just started. I'll address the particular issues as they come up, though.

One other thing worth mentioning is Vaina here. After the gray 'Mail call' text bubbles used in To The Tower, I decided to assign them to an actual character, so I took the Birdon enemy from KSSU and recolored one to match the gray coloration. Thus, Vaina the mail bird was created. She's not a particularly important character, but she does deliver the mail, that's for sure.

Difficulty number one with trying to write this segment: I made myself use the whole cast. Juggling that many characters is often quite difficult, and for some reason, I still insisted on trying to juggle that many regardless. It wouldn't be until much later that I start really trying to split up the cast more.

Jet Striker, as well as the upcoming antagonist cameo, were one of the reasons why I needed to really properly vet the characters I used as cameos, rather than just accepting any and all submissions.

Jet is awkward for many reasons, not the least of which is the design. He's a heavily-edited Kirby sprite, with Sonic character hair tufts, custom shoes, and a facial scar. This meant that his actual sprites were also fairly limited, which prevented me using him for more complex scenarios most of the time. He was a difficult character to use in scenes, and thus he didn't get to do all that much.

On top of that, the character didn't have much going on for him. He was a very "somebody's first OC" vibe, made by a user who never even commented on the comic until this very page (Tekern, the owner, sent me cameo details in private messages). I didn't really have much to work with, from either the awkward character descriptions or the actual user themselves.

Ultimately, at the end of the day, it's a character I just should've blatantly never used, due to limitations, lack of fitting in, and questionable fan presence. I rewarded this guy for existing, and it was to active detriment to my comic in the process. A net negative overall.

"in these here somewhere"?

Frozen Fantasy is a stage from another DS Kirby game, Kirby Canvas Curse. Technically, it is an area that should not actually exist anymore, since the plot of Canvas Curse is that Dream Land has become a painted world via the machinations of evil witch Drawcia, and defeating Drawcia reverted the lands and Kirby back to normal. Frozen Fantasy being one of those areas means it shouldn't be real anymore, but I elected to ignore that instead.

I used this stage because Canvas Curse, unlike Super Star Ultra, had far more background maps available to use, but it also has quite a different visual style to KSSU, so I elected to not use it unless I had to. KSSU didn't have sufficient enough maps for me without trying to take backgrounds myself, especially due to a lack of ice/snow levels in the game, so I chose to use a Canvas Curse map here instead.

The real problem this caused is that Frozen Fantasy is a very basic ice stage, and unlike a place like the Old Tower in KSSU, there's not much variety on display. The entire place is structured the same and looks the same, so it became another difficulty for me in writing this segment, as I quickly ran out of things to actually have the characters explore.

Number one, I'm not making that much of a sprite edit. Simple recolors? Fine. Not too much of a hassle. But hair, bandannas, and metal coatings? Way too much hassle for a cameo. Heck, it's too much hassle for ANY character that I make a sprite sheet for. You'll notice that the only real sprite edit for a character in any way, shape, or form, is Jet, and I didn't make those sprites. Tekern did.

Number two, you're asking for two cameos there. Not allowed under any circumstance. No matter what, only one cameo is permitted per person. Sure, I may use the cameo more than once, but I'm not ever going to allow any user a second cameo.

Number three, you also want to have some sort of 'impenerable' flying fortress, assuming imperenable means impenetrable or something. Unless the place is a given area in KSSU/KCC/possibly another area from a different game, I can't use it. The only flying fortress in the Kirby series is the Battleship Halberd, but that wouldn't make much sense in this comic's context.

And besides, everything you just told me was exactly as you could've PM'd, so yeah. Good for future reference, I guess.

Okay, I admit, I did misread FC's as FC, but the apostrophe may have thrown me off considering it's not needed.

If the fortress IS the Halberd, why didn't you just SAY Halberd and save us the trouble? Even so, my reasons still stand. Having the Halberd in control of anyone other than Meta Knight wouldn't make sense at all. (Unless the person is Yin-Yarn/Dark Nebula)

You said no such thing about not being able to edit sprites. You just asked if you could have cameos.

So, what you're saying is if you knew how to edit sprites, you wouldn't be asking for a cameo? What? How does that even make sense?

And giving a Kirby a bandanna is still editing. For one thing, I'm not even GOOD at that kind of thing. For another, I've already declined the bandanna part.

UY: Oh...well, actually, Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style plotlines wasn't really what I was shooting for here (although now that I think about it, that DOES sound pretty cool...), I was really talking about a...what's it called...a "filler" plot made by a fan, and then an important plot done afterwards...as for my cameos, I would've wanted the KAS to go up against one of Dreamland's biggest crime lords, and his daughter would be the one to help the KAS stop him (the crime lord being me, and in the plot he targets GiGi, the author of that 20 Kirbies comic...). What do you think of this?
@Jareks: Ah, I see I've sparked some interest in the fans! :) Although, you do have a point, sir...I don't recall Ultimate Yoshi doing that kind of stuff at any point during the comics...maybe it was with another comic we haven't heard aboot before...*shrugs* :/

Err, Trevor, you don't like 20 Times Kirby just because of the suspense? Ok, I respect you hate suspense, but I love it. And like Ulti said, suspense makes people feel anxious for the next comic, and I like that. Most of the histories I like have suspense, not all of them, of course, and I love adding it to my histories too. And honestly, I don't think I've ever put a big suspense on 20TK, all of them were small. But I dunno exactly, cause I know what is gonna happen, but you don't, so it's different. And about what you put next page, I didn't understand what you exactly mean when you said that you didn't like the direction the comic's going... Yeah, I'm talking seriously. And you don't like that Marx and Panee are jerks? Which villian isn't a jerk? I know some aren't, but I prefer the jerk villian than the "if you can't beat them, join them" one, in other words, that villians who after some time losing, give up and decide to go to the good side.
And yeah, Jarkes, I know We Are Not Alone is maybe too big, but I didn't think it'd be, back to end of December 2010, or maybe January, dunno exactly, when its idea was almost done in my mind. Also, there are lots of stuff happening, so it being big kind of makes sense, doesn't it?

One of the strangest aspects of me utilizing Frozen Fantasy is the claim that it's Jet's home. Why would he live in an otherwise-uninhabited, gigantic glacial area? Even ignoring the fact that it's supposed to be made of paint, it's complete nonsense that I never really thought through. He doesn't have a home, he has a territory, and no seeming way to live or involve himself in civilization otherwise.

Oh, didnt see the weird kirby there

Maps in these games, whether they're from Super Star Ultra or Canvas Curse or what have you, are always formatted into a 'background' and 'foreground' layer. The foreground is the land that you walk on and interact with, and the background is usually a separate static visual that scrolls separately from everything else, to add the illusion of depth to a world.

For a "time-saving" measure, I would often combine both a foreground and background image into one static single image, to make copy-and-pasting it into comic panels faster. That way, I only would need to copy it in one time, and then it'd already be pre-made and ready for future panels. This is how I made areas like Green Greens or Whispy Woods and whatnot.

This methodology worked fine for maps that had backgrounds that could scroll and loop properly, but you'll notice here in Frozen Fantasy, it functioned really awkwardly. The background visual here was never meant to loop, so when I copied-and-pasted it all below the foreground layer, and then merged it all into one single layer, the cut-off points between the separate instances of the background image were extremely noticeable. Every single panel here, for example, has an awkward-looking cut-off point, and the visuals of this place NEVER get better. They're probably the most consistently bad visuals of the entire comic.

CONGRADULATIONS! Darkmario if you keep this up you'll make algebra teacher status in no time.

The small, black-colored Kirby following them is the second of the two cameos of Jetting Across the Ice. This one, named Ignus Unis, had a bit of a small saga of involving them that you might've read in earlier SJ Comments sections, but to make a long story short: they asked publicly, and went back and forth with me on whether or not they could be included due to their sprites.

The reason why the character is a smaller Kirby is because his sprite sheet is based on the visual style of the GBA Kirby games, Nightmare in Dream Land and Amazing Mirror (and Squeak Squad on DS, which reused the GBA visual style). These visuals, obviously, were smaller than the style normally used in this comic, Super Star Ultra. Thus, when I was initially given GBA-style sprites, I rejected it.

However, I was planning on this segment and needed an antagonistic role to be filled, so once the character-owner tried and failed to make KSSU-style sprites for Ignis, I relented and just accepted them regardless of the visual discrepancies.

This was once again an example of why I needed better vetting for cameo roles, because the end result is a Kirby character who looks wildly out-of-place compared to everyone else, as well as similar issues of "I don't know who this character is or who the creator is because the only times they've commented have been to try to get a cameo", so in the end the plot of this segment became a mess because I had no idea what to do with either Jet OR Ignis.

But right indeed.

See, here's the thing about the 'To the Tower' style. It's basically plotless, in concept. Similar to the First Mission, the whole vibe is just "have characters wander around until they reach their destination", but the main difference with TTT and JAtI is a lack of known destination. Thus, it just kind of becomes a Nothing plot.

Once I run out of things to have the characters do, it eventually needs to be forced into the plotline, which in To the Tower happened when Wiz just teleported all the characters into Fusion Kirby's lair. There, though, there was at least a whole host of different areas to explore and shenanigans to encounter with the characters.

Jetting Across the Ice's problem, in regards to Frozen Fantasy and the fact that there was one single enemy character that was already stalking Kirby and Jet, was that the glacial area was large and empty. There was nothing TO explore, so I had nothing to do with a majority of the cast during this part of Shenanigans Adventures. It's part of why this segment is so weak. It didn't have good storytelling whatsoever.

My problem with the "Melee is better than Brawl" people is that they think that because they removed "techniques" (which were actually unintentional glitches) such as wavedashing and L-canceling which allowed them to beat those who couldn't utilize those "techniques" properly. When Brawl altered the mechanics to make those "techniques" impossible, those people whined because they could no longer beat anyone.

What? It's true. And actually, I'm pretty sure everyone's HEAVIER in Brawl. Or at least Ganondorf is... God, he sucks in Brawl...

Play Melee again (I think this works better on Kingdom 2) Just jump off and see how fast you fall. If you were heavier in Brawl, how would they pull off the flying section of Pokemon Arena? And there were a few annoying things in Melee like repeat-throwing (Though I did manage to pull it off with Yoshi on a custom level) And some thing that pikachu does where you can't even touch the ground.

Original Comic Revised Comic

Blagh, does this page suck.

Okay, so, first the reference note. Jet Striker, being part-Sonic OC, had a move from Sonic the Hedgehog's arsenal known as the Spin Dash. It is as Jet describes, he spins into a ball really fast and uses it as a tackle attack, essentially. It's very unfitting and out-of-place here, but oh well.

Anyways, this was the beginning of the downfall of Kirby as a character, something that lasts for quite a while after this. After the Beginning gave Kirby a tragic backstory of losing his friend, and then I didn't use him at all in the crossover, I wound up accidentally focusing on that tragic aspect to Kirby and how he might react to it. Ignoring all of the previous 5 segments that came before the Beginning, and Kirby's happy-go-lucky personality, I made the writing mistake of treating Kirby's past like it had just happened, and thus giving him this really aggravated and bitter outlook.

It began here, where it manifested as him heavily focusing on Keeby's death, and being quick to anger and low in patience. It was entirely unintentional, and I eventually realized what I was doing with Kirby and tried to fix it in future segments, but for a while, this is the Kirby of Kirby Adventure: an unfittingly disgruntled warrior.

He's still the same character, technically, cause Kirby did always have a bit of a seriousness to him at times in previous segments, but it was heavily exaggerated with his light-heartedness ignored, so it was just overall a big problem, and I think the first time it became noticable is how he shouts at Ignus here.

Speaking of Ignus, seeing him here, and he's basically "What if FP was a bad guy?" It's kind of annoying how one-note the character is, but I didn't really have many ideas, nor did the owner of the character, so it just... kinda became this non-issue. Part of the problem, though, was also that Ignus was always planned to be a side villain anyway, quickly to be sidelined. Thus, I made the writing mistake of also not bothering to come up with much for him as a result, knowing "oh yeah he's not gonna matter that much." It's not a ton of build-up, but it's still a build-up to an anticlimax, and at this point, hoo boy is THAT getting stale.

Anyway, about the comic. Kirby never seemed to be emotionally charged since the Beginning. Yes, I know what happened with Hali and Talzo, but… it seems like Kirby became a completely different character, a stark contrast to the beginning of the comic (not the chapter, The Beginning, but The First Mission and Average Days chapters, not to mention To The Tower). I dunno, maybe it's just me.

This comic had to be completely reformatted, but I think this is the last time I ever did a page more than three panels wide originally.

I also had to fix the last panel to fit the new size, which kinda made it a bit cramped now, but oh well. I also had to recolor the KDA characters yet again in that last panel.

Finally, panel 6 had horrible text resizing that I've now finally fixed.

This was always the plan for Jetting Across the Ice, to have a fake-out "plot" that would get usurped by the unexpected interruption of Talzo's return. While the idea of that is still a solid one and one of the few concepts of this segment I won't rip to shreds, I do still also think that I didn't do a very good job setting UP a plot to be usurped to begin with. Talzo showing up lacks a little bit of impact as a result, because the lack of much going on makes it a bit obvious that something more is on the table (ignoring the fact that in my own old author comments, I was saying "don't worry, there's a lot more to this segment!!")

I know 99% of the people who read this are REALLY HAPPY now. This was expected for me. Why? The cameo villain lost easily, and why would it not end soon? Another villain is the answer. Well shit...

Talzo getting friends was also something I planned out for a bit, since I wanted a sort of 'rival' group to combat the KAS at times. As I was fleshing out Talzo's story and history, I knew I didn't want to tell it alone, and so his second appearance was the perfect time to introduce more villains.

How Talzo saying he wanted to get revenge on Kirby and his group led to Kirby assuming Talzo wasn't alone here, though, is a bit of a weird leap in logic.

Also my parents would prolly be mad if I bought a Kirby game but yeah.

A Gim is a little robot enemy, with a retractable single hand that comes out of the hole in its face where it's second eye would've been. It gives the Yo-yo ability when eaten, a power that uses Yo-yo tricks as attacks. I quite like both Yo-yo and Gim, so I leapt at the opportunity to include one in the comic.

They normally do not have magical rods that cast mirror-barrier spells, that's not a thing in Kirby at all. It's somewhat based on the Mirror copy ability, that can use mirrors as attacks, mixed with the Beam ability that uses a magic rod for electrical attacks, but overall it's an original creation.

The name 'Kiina' is not original, however. I mentioned early on how a lot of my naming conventions were similar to Bionicle names, especially Vezo's name being one letter chopped off from the Bionicle names of Vezon and Vezok. That was always unintentional inspiration, but by this point, I had made that realization, so I decided to be a bit cheeky and just outright use a Bionicle name for the new character. Thus, Kiina the Gim here is named after the entirely-otherwise-unrelated Kiina the Bionicle.

Wait, something just occurred to me... how can Keito tell that it's a female Gim?

Because Jet and Ignus were both cameo characters, there was a bit of a forced obligation to keep using them, even though they weren't interesting characters nor did they have any more relevancy now that their minimal plotline got usurped. If I didn't have that obligation, they probably would've been entirely ignored from here on out, but instead I had them team up for no good reason lmao

Ahahahahahaha

The introduction of Zykan here is so innocuous, if you were new you wouldn't really think anything of him comparatively if I wasn't laughing suspiciously right now.

Zykan is a Sir Kibble, an armored enemy normally colored gold or silver. They're the enemy representative of the Cutter copy ability that Vezo wields, so they're knights who attack with boomerang blades. What's beneath their armor is unknown normally, but in Zykan's case, I actively made him a possessed suit of armor rather than an actual creature inside of it. Hence, him being a knight of shadows.

The attack that Kaxo is sidestepping in panels 2 and 3 is one of the Cutter ability's moves. An attack known as Final Cutter in the games will end with Kirby/Sir Kibble slashing themselves up into the air, and then landing back down and creating a sort of energy shockwave that travels forward along the ground for a bit.

Just because something drags on (which, at this point, this arc has NOT), doesn't mean it will end anti-climatically... Though I do have to admit that some arcs in this comic, such as the crossover (not that it was bad) and The Beginning (awfully long for a flashback) dragged on a little too long.

EDIT: Oh, god, I just realized... you're complaining about 20 Times Kirby again, aren't you? Well... okay, in that particular regard, you do have a point. 50 parts is way too long for a single arc, and it did end very anti-climatically. But that doesn't necessarily mean this will... I had come up with a bit of secret backstory for Vezo for a while now, and decided that Kiina would be a good opportunity to show it off. I don't actually remember if Vezo's backstory came first and Kiina spawned naturally from that, or if Kiina came first and I inserted her into Vezo's backstory, but regardless, it became canon history for the pair of them that they knew each other, and Kiina's active (but not subconscious) memory of Vezo is currently missing. How mysterious.

You're taking this whole "my old friend must've been brainwashed" thing really well Vezo...

The names Kirby lists off here are all of the major villains of canon Kirby games. In order:

Nightmare is a living nightmare who tried to invade Dream Land through the Fountain of Dreams in the NES game Kirby's Adventure (and its GBA remake, Nightmare in Dream Land). He was defeated by Kirby repairing the Star Rod and vanquishing Nightmare with it.

Dark Matter was previously elaborated on in a different annotation, an evil possession eyeball that was the main villain of Kirby's Dream Land 2 on the Game Boy. Zero, however, is the boss of Dark Matter. It's also a big eyeball, but white instead of black. It commands Dark Matter from the Hyper Zone in Kirby's Dream Land 3 on the SNES, and after its defeated in that game, it came back as an undead form known as 02 in the game's sequel, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Both times, Kirby destroyed Zero, hence the "(twice)".

Marx is the main villain of Kirby Super Star, or at least its Milky Way Wishes subgame, since the game is split into subgames with different plotlines. Marx is a trickster jester with a demonic winged form that wanted to take over Planet Popstar, but Kirby defeated him. In Super Star Ultra, Marx gained an undead form known as Marx Soul that came back for revenge, but that never actually happened in Kirby Adventure's canon, so Kirby doesn't mention Marx Soul here or that they fought twice.

Dark Mind is the villain of Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, and is the creator of Shadow Kirby (and thus, the Shadow Kirby race in Kirby Adventure). He also made an evil clone of Meta Knight known as Dark Meta Knight. Dark Mind is considered the Mirror World parallel to both Nightmare and Dark Matter, since Dark Mind has similar designs to both characters. Regardless, Kirby defeated him too, with Shadow Kirby's assistance and Meta Knight's borrowed sword.

Drawcia is the villain of Kirby Canvas Curse, a pseudo-spin-off game. She was an evil witch who was a living painting come to life, and turned Kirby's world into paint herself. Kirby teamed up with the Power Paintbrush in order to defeat her and her soul form, destroying the painting that birthed her and restoring Dream Land to normal.

Dark Nebula is the twist villain of Kirby Squeak Squad. While the main antagonists of that game are the thieving Squeaks and their leader, Daroach, when Daroach opens a particular treasure chest, he accidentally unleashed Dark Nebula from it, who possessed Daroach and fled for the stars. Nebula is vaguely related to Dark Matter, since they again have similar designs, but Nebula has elemental powers and is star-shaped. He was the particularly-easy boss that I mentioned in the Beginning as, in this canon, giving Kirby an overconfidence problem.

I don't need to explain who Galacta Knight is, you should remember him from the Beginning.

Kaxo yelling at Caiya to stop standing around was a direct callback to the last Talzo-related segment, Escape. That time, Caiya was in her dumb personality, and just elected not to fight until provoked by Kaxo. Here, though, she was prepping the returning Ice Orb she got from To The Tower.

Vashta Nerada, if I remember correctly are tiny invisible things that live in forests and hide in shadows. If you step into one of the shadows they live in, they will kill you, usually eating you.

Original Comic Revised Comic

I suppose one bright side to having the obligation to include Jet and Ignus in more of the segment meant that I felt the need to include a fourth member of Talzo's Gang in order to combat them. NAVO here, unlike Kiina and Zykan, was entirely unplanned and a bit rushed, but while I disliked him in this segment, he went on to become a quick fan and personal favorite later down the line.

One of Kirby's powers is the Jet ability, which gives him a mechanical headset that functions like a rocketpack, letting him jet across the sky like a mini-plane. Capsule J is the enemy associated with the Jet ability in Kirby Super Star, but notably he isn't the Jet enemy in Super Star Ultra. Capsule J's design was noticeably similar to that of the character TwinBee, a Konami-owned arcade shoot-em-up game series, so there are rumors that there were behind-the-scenes issues after Kirby Super Star released with the Capsule J design.

Thus, when the game got remade into KSSU, Capsule J was replaced with Capsule J2, an enemy with a very similar design, but with a new face/head in order to make it distinct from TwinBee. The next time the Jet ability appeared in Kirby Planet Robobot on 3DS in 2016, the developers actually continued the trend and made a Capsule J3 with a slightly tweaked design from J2, too, even though that game wasn't a remake of anything.

All this to say, the Capsule J sprites here that NAVO is a recolor of are still SNES-styled Super Star sprites, rather than Super Star Ultra sprites. There's a bit of a stylistic difference here, but compared to some other visual differences like Ignus Unis or even the Canvas Curse background, it's not as noticeable.

Since my original plan with these orbs was to introduce a new one in each chapter, I used Zykan here to set them up as something a bit more than just a random one-off thing Caiya found one time. Why Zykan actually has an orb in his possession at all, that's a mystery I never answered, but I do eventually answer how he knows about them.

The creature spawned from the Metal Orb is known as a Metalun, or a Metalum, depending on the translation. It's from Kirby Squeak Squad, and provides Kirby the Metal ability when swallowed. Metal Kirby is invincible but extremely slow and can hardly walk or fly, so it's not much of a useful power in that game.

I think this may be the beginning of me making Raize a proper planner and strategist. You can notice him being the one to make the realization of the loophole that allowed Shadik to get through the mirrors.

So while this segment was rough for some characters, especially Kirby, it was at least a boon for others like Raize, I'll give it that.

Wow. These comics, they are just... ...AMAZING! I read all of them in one day (Not including this one because it wasn't there yesterday), and I'm amazed. I liked this comic so much, I recolored a Kirby of my own. And I feel like I could make my own Kirby Comics (though, I don't know if I will). And, I really love these comics!

The Metalun spawned by the Metal Orb got caught up in Caiya's ice blast. It's in the third panel, but hardly visible beneath the (poorly-implemented) laser effect.

Thinking about it, I'm not really sure how the Metal Orb allows Zykan to hover in the air.

I chose 7 different orbs because I was very Paper Mario-pilled, and still often am. The idea of 7 collectible macguffins that lead to an 8th final chapter/confrontation is a quite nice set-up and format, and initially I think I planned on trying to have 7 or 8 total chapters in Kirby Adventure. I only wound up having 5 in the end, though.

For THIS art contest, the challenge is to draw your favorite SCENE. It can be just some random joke, it can be something that happened over the course of some comics, it can be something that is based on a scene that happened (example: http://ultimateyoshi.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d45h8n1 ), heck, it could even be like the chapter buttons I've got and can be a compilation of stuff that happened within an entire segment! And the winner gets their character in the comic, same as last time. Only now, the winner gets their character in as another friend of Talzo!

Hmm. I swear that it was different.

Shadik using his teleportation powers to teleport into the air and crash land into somebody, Thwomp-style, is one of my few gags from this segment that I still enjoy.

The quick defeats of all of these gang-members, though, is a bit underwhelming in the grand scheme of things. Zykan, Kiina, and NAVO all went down in fairly quick succession, and none of the three really got a chance to shine. Zykan added a tiny bit of mystery with the orbs, Kiina added a tiny bit of mystery with the minor backstory teases, and NAVO... existed, but in terms of threat, none of them added anything.

It's another reason why this segment is a bit of a let-down, it hypes up the danger of these new characters, but the Squad is competent enough that they achieve victory so easily that it doesn't really convey any sense of tension or danger in the long run. It's a mistake that I try to rectify after this, that's for sure.

Before you consider Kiina weak, consider this: her strategy was to trap the KAS, not fight them. Her strengths are her knowledge and creativity, the latter an oddity in a robot, but regardless. She wasn't built to really fight much, so since Shadik is the awesome Shadow Kirby that he is, Kiina never stood a chance in a one-on-one fight.

...I think I just proved that Kiina IS weak.

Just a small typo fix in this page.

I'm not really sure why I was doing, like, a mini-argument between Kaxo and Caiya about rushing in and using brute force vs careful planning, especially when Caiya was absolutely not doing any careful planning at all. There's a semblance of an idea there, with one character being headstrong and another being careful and both taking it to extremes to the point where they get into trouble both, and need to compromise to get out of their problems and then they learn their lesson and get to have a bit of a moral at the end, yada yada yada, like, that's an idea that works and could fit right in with like a cartoon show or something.

But none of it is set up or executed well here, so it kinda just comes out of nowhere, is largely irrelevant, and has nothing to do with anything. Yet another failure of this segment.

Original Comic Revised Comic

Unlike the last major adventure segment in To the Tower, this time I at least get to try to wrap things up with a mini-epilogue. Not that it really helps the plot much.

This segment largely wound up being about a third useless unrelated meandering, and then 2/3rds setting-up of Talzo having colleagues and the Squad briefly fighting them and quickly winning. As far as plots go, nothing much interesting happens. As far as action goes, it's a bit underwhelming and even Escape was significantly more interesting. And as far as set-up goes... it's serviceable, but could've had a lot more interesting things going on around it.

If you couldn't tell, I'm not particularly a fan of how I wrote this segment, and that's a trend that's gonna continue for quite a few more segments, unfortunately. We're in the Dark Era of Kirby Adventure writing, that's for sure. Though if you enjoy any of this, by all means, feel free and valid, my own personal cringe at this doesn't necessitate others feeling the same way.

And now I removed the use of the word 'dama' in this update page. Sorry, past Ulti. It was a dumb idea.

The idea for the teleportation was that this mysterious 'Him' would bring back the gang members to this strange dark lair area, either once they failed and were rendered unconscious, or when specifically asked (hence Talzo's line of 'take me away' right before he teleported). I'm not sure if I ever really made that particularly clear in-comic, though.

Gigi is the last member of Talzo's gang to meet, and she was added as a sort of stay-at-home secretarial-type character, a semi-newbie. The role was conceived mid-segment, and I used a second art contest to get a fan-submitted character to fill the role. The winner was Gigi19972010, a user who will become particularly prominent soon enough, that's for sure.

Gigi was a particularly serendipitous character, because she is a Kirby with the Mirror ability, a power I've mentioned in these annotations a few times by now. Since Kiina used a mirror rod in order to trap the Kirbies, having a Mirror Kirby in the trenches like this made it more conceivable how Kiina acquired such a rod to begin with.

I wanted to go back to this comic. I feel like these two characters are used and developed WAY too much. I know kirby was recently worked on, character wise (which was sucessful) but the other 6 members of the KAS get little to no character development AT ALL. This comic was a perfect example of these exact two characters developing way more than the other members. You even used Saia in that long speech with Kexas in the third crossover. I suggest working more on Shat'l, Raize, and ESPECIALLY Keito, his personally could have SO MUCH potential, but he always seems to be "in background", but he doesn't even want to, unlike Raize. I hope this could help you out, no hard feelings!

Original Comic Revised Comic

The idea of having an off-screen machine that constantly rebuilds NAVO from scratch, memory intact, is a bit of an odd one. I think I got the idea from someplace else, but can't quite remember where. It's a bit similar to a Doctor Who Series 6 idea, but I don't think that's where I got it from, so... hm.

Either way, I used the idea to justify NAVO's insanity and recklessness a bit more. If he doesn't have to worry about death, he'd be the perfect bait/sacrificial material for the villains, and be a much harder cockroach to squash in the long run. Not a bad concept, but a bit strange that I applied it to a character I self-admitted to hating back in 2011.

I hated NAVO for the main reason that, even for my own standards of "start with a simple character concept and expand it later on" for writing characters, NAVO was painfully simplistic at first. His insanity was very one-note, as were his repetitive lines, hence me using Gigi to take out a bit of anger towards him here. What I forgot in the moment was that I would be able to expand on the character later, and doing so was what saved NAVO from the garbage heap and turned him into a beloved character to write for. It's all a matter of perspective and effort, sometimes.

A small update here, but panel 5 originally was missing a text bubble tail for Gigi.

Look at me, setting up things that never get used in the long run, haha. I already stated that the Fire Orb never gets shown off, so for those of you who are new readers, place your bets now! Two of the other orbs Shat'l lists out also never get shown, but which two I won't say. You'll just have to read to find out which orbs actually do get encountered.

Y'know, because I did have to cut down the orb story arc and trim it, it's in a sense a bit of a trope subversion of the typical Chekov's Gun idea, where something gets brought up early on so there's a vibe that it MUST get used later on, because otherwise why bother bringing it up? It's a common and useful storytelling device, but by changing the plans, I accidentally wind up subverting the trope, which is interesting to say the least.

The real question is, how does Keito manage to take one single gold coin and turn it into multiple smaller copper coins? The answer is that its using RPG change logic. If 50 gold pieces are worth 500 silver pieces, then you basically get to have 500 silver pieces regardless. It's like Legend of Zelda rupees.

More retconning away the "dama" concept.

Introducing a head honcho controlling Talzo's gang was an idea I wanted to establish after fleshing out Talzo's story in my head more. His identity doesn't get revealed for a good long while, so until that point, I'll refer to him by the title Mysterious Shadowy Guy, or MSG, which is what fans colloquially called him before the eventual reveal.

I personally envisioned that the MSG knew Talzo would fail here, but wanted Talzo's ego to take a hit rather than simply first going through with the idea to target the Squadmembers rather than Kirby himself. That's the trick to manipulating minions, you gotta get them to agree with your plans through ulterior methods. If MSG had forbade Talzo from trying to fight Kirby before this, you can definitely envision Talzo insisting he'll be better prepared and able to take on Kirby this time, right? Right.

To clarify, "Hijacked by Ganon" is a trope that describes a moment where a new villain of a comic, video game, move, etc., that's been menacing the heroes for a while is suddenly upstaged by a previous villain (usually a villain who's been part of the series for a long time). Named for Ganondorf, and his ridiculous tendency to do that (most notably in Twilight Princess).

...Does anyone here besides me actually GO to TvTropes? ...And haven't I asked that before?

1: Galacta Knight was stabbed in the back, ultimately killing him.
2: Marx was killed TWICE. I doubt that Marx would want to fare against Kirby again, especially with a whole bunch more.

That's a lot of comments

The fun fact about this page is that the only reason it exists is because my science class at school just had a mention of solar flares at the time, so I came up with the idea that it'd make for a good conclusion to the segment. Admiring natural beauties is certainly a nice idea on paper, in terms of calming down and enjoying life.

It's not quite super effective here, though, since it kinda comes out of nowhere and it doesn't quite address Kirby's actual problems. It's more of a short-term distraction if anything, but oh well. The intention was solid, at least.

Also highly amusing is my heavily-Windows focused upbringing here, because to my neverending personal amusement nowadays, Past Ulti wanted to cheat their way out of drawing a night-sky aurora and decided to just pull up an image from Google Images. And since I had never used a Mac computer before, I unintentionally used a default Mac background and put it on full display. It'd be like if I unironically displayed the Windows XP green hills background on a drawing, and had no idea it was anything special.

Anyways, that's Jetting Across the Ice wrapped up. It's got a few more positives than I remembered, but ultimately, it doesn't really leave a lasting impression outside of the idea that it introduced a few new antagonists to watch out for later. The other parts to JAtI that make it unique are really unimpressive, though, and like I alluded to earlier, this was the start of a particularly rough patch of Kirby Adventure writing. The worst of it is yet to come, though, that all takes place in the next chapter, unfortunately.

Alright, so, much like with The Beginning..., it's time for ridiculously long author comment time! Feel free to ignore all of this! Woo!


So, here we go! The end of what I consider chapter 2 of Kirby Adventure. A grand total of 37 more comics than the first chapter (First Mission through To The Tower). And as with The Beginning..., I've got a lot to talk about!

Firstly, there's the fact that this may be the best segment in Kirby Adventure history. I was able to tie in so much stuff that had happened in the previous seven segments. Most were just passing comments (Part 3, Kirby: "What is up with absolutely nobody knowing who we are? First those Waddle Dees, now you..." -Referencing The First Mission. Part 16, Talzo: "I distinctly recall you saying I'd be back, and you'd be ready." -Referencing Escape! Part 32, Caiya: "Remember our missions in the Old Tower?" -Referencing To The Tower. Part 1, Caiya: "Oh good, looks like a normal mission after that multi-dimensional stuff." -Referencing From Dream Adventures.), some references needed to be examined firsthand (Keito being likely to unevenly split up money and having his secret storage bin, referencing Average Days For Unaverage Puffs, Saia, Keito, Raize, and Shadik not knowing Kiina, referencing Meet The KAS (because Vezo doesn't really like talking about his past, so they don't know anything about her until it's absolutely necessary for Vezo to explain), Kirby remembering Keeby and Galacta Knight during his speech towards Ignus, referencing The Beginning...). Overall, it was just a really great segment, how it just worked.

Starting all the way at the beginning, we get introduced to the character Vaina, a gray Birdon mailcarrier. I guess you could see her as a slight reference to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic character Derpy Hooves, being gray and being a mailcarrier, but this was completely unintentional. Mostly, it was creating a character out of that one line she had back in To The Tower, it's first and ninth part: Mail call! She says it again here, and is the exact same color as the TTT speech bubble, but not a single person reached the conclusion that they are, in fact, the same character. Oh well.

Tekern's character, Jet Striker, was a hard cameo to work with. The personality just didn't really go along with what I really had in mind, and I had absolutely no idea what tekern was like so I could sort of base Jet off of him. A distinct lack of many sprites, such as running, jumping, etc. was also evident. His character ended up being very passive, tending to stay in the background because, quite frankly, and to no offense, I didn't really like working with him once Ignus appeared.

The Frozen Fantasy thing wasn't tekern's idea, however. Tekern's idea was exactly what Jet requested. I wanted something awesome to come out of this segment, however, so shifted the scene to Frozen Fantasy. I didn't have a vast majority of places to choose from, however, so Frozen Fantasy probably wouldn't have been the final choice if there were more backgrounds on The Spriters' Resource.

Pairing Caiya with Kaxo when Kirby split the team up was a definite necessity. I loved how the two personalities simply bounced off of one another while the pair adventured. It created some great character tension in-comic, and also made for quite a bit of laughs.

I didn't go with torturing Vezo some more by pairing him with Kaxo, cause I wanted to give him a break. Some break he ended up with, eh? Still, Saia and Vezo were also a nice pairing to work with.

While Caiya was adventuring, I unintentionally wrote her dialogue as if she was David Tennant's Doctor from Doctor Who, if anybody watches that. That's what I get for going on marathon before writing that specific comic. However, it DID create a brilliant idea that can appear later on, if I'm lucky. Allons-y!

The one thing I've got to say about Vezo falling off the cliff is that he was looking back the other way, towards where Saia was, before he fell off. It wasn't as if he could see in front of him to actually NOTICE the cliff.

The 200th comic special was a big thing for me. Instead of ending the segment right then and there, as I did in To The Tower, I opted for making a huge comic involving the fight between Kirby and Ignus. I think the fight scene worked out really well, as well as Kirby's speech towards Ignus. It also showed how different a character Kirby has evolved into in these recent segments. Writing The Beginning... segment really changed the guy.

Ignus Unis himself is the only cameo I'm ever going to accept in an Advanced Kirby style. Really, the only reason I did accept the cameo from The White Darkness (previously Blast The Hunter) was because I needed this kind of minor cameo villain before Talzo showed up to crash the party. He was, however, more fun to write for than Jet. The random silliness and love for candy made me have lots of fun writing his overly stupid dialogue. He, too, also had a distinct lack of sprites, though I made up for it by creating his 'Fire Up' move, where the flames on his hands appeared. For that, I was able to recolor the Burning sprite sheet from Nightmare In Dream Land so I could give Kirby a decent battle with some good sprite use.

*CUE THE SPAZZING*
Saying that Talzo's return was a long-awaited plot development is an understatement like you wouldn't believe. If not for the need to explain the background of the Kirby Adventure Squad and my wish to not keep BattleStarX waiting for that crossover, he definitely would have returned sooner. However, the long wait also made his reappearance that much sweeter.

It had actually been quite a while since I had worked with Talzo, so I was a little rusty with writing his dialogue. I think I had him in character, though.

Now my screen's turning orange. AAAH.

Okay... um, ignoring that, next up was Talzo's buddies. Friends? Acquaintances? I really don't know what you would call the four of them, but they certainly wouldn't be working together if not for some overall goal they all wish to achieve.

First up is Kiina. I had always liked Gims, and the Yo-Yo ability was really fun, shame it wasn't in Return To Dream Land. Kiina's character is still sorta underdeveloped, but none of these guys are out of play for much long anymore.

Kiina's background with Vezo was made up literally on the spot, but it just WORKED. Expect to see more about that mysterious backstory later. Other than that, not much else to say.

Kiina's name was also a complete joke on my part that 100% of you didn't get! See, I had noticed that a vast majority of my character names sound a lot like a name that a Lego Bionicle would have (Vezo especially). Upon noticing this, I immediately, for fun, decided to give the next character an actual Bionicle's name. Obviously, that would be Kiina! Go google it, I'm not kidding.

Zykan, knight of shadows, showed up second, but was thought up first. Again, I don't actually have much to say about him, other than I kinda like how he's all noble and knightly while still being evil. But believe me, Zykan's backstory certainly is a doozy.

The return of To The Tower's Ice Orb was mostly to create the elemental orb subplot that will be showing up randomly in future segments. I had originally intended to show the scene with Shat'l explaining to Caiya what they were, but in the end, it got scrapped because I fastforwarded at the end of To The Tower.

Third in the list of new evil villains, my absolute least favorite character I have ever created: Navo. He's just pretty much insane. Writing him was pretty much the same thing over and over again: Surprise, random words, Navo will never die, and insane laughter. Like I had said in an earlier author comment, his laughter was best imagined like Doctor Who's Dalek Caan character from the new season 4 finale, The Stolen Earth. Navo's name is always capitalized in the comic itself, but it's not an acronym at all. It's capitalized just to be capitalized. Navo himself also has a really weird backstory. We've already seen that he truly can't die; he got blown up by Kaxo and returns perfectly fi... er, normal for Navo at the end of this segment.

Navo's repetition of the word Surprise also comes from a My Little Pony fanfiction, if anybody cares. The specific one is called Substitute Harmony for those bronies out there.

Raize and Shadik's using of the mirror loophole was sorta hard to understand, but Shadik isn't technically a Kirby. He's a Shadow Kirby, a very similar copy race created by Dark Mind back in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror.

When Caiya and Zykan used the Ice and Metal Orbs, respectively, some of you asked where the Metalum went. In actuality, he was supposed to be vaporized by the beams, but I derped and screwed up the layering on the panel, so he didn't show up.

Gigi was, quite obviously, Gigi19972010's character from winning the second Kirby Adventure fan art contest. This position was the first one thought up, actually. Not the personality or details, just the role the character played: the one minion that stayed behind to look after the base. Essentially, the rookie. Her personality hasn't really shown up much, much like the rest of Talzo's gang, though, again, like the rest of the gang, she shall certainly be appearing in the future.

Having these few parts near the end of Jetting Across The Ice, where it alternates between the two main groups in the aftermath of their confrontation, was a really good move on my part. On Talzo's end, it showed how the team works, relatively. They sort of half respect Talzo, but still satirize his leadership skills and such. Gigi's hatred of Navo is also clearly evident here.

On the Squad's end of things, we get to see Vezo being comforted by Saia after being emotionally hurt by Kiina's seeming betrayal, Keito being silly as usual, and Caiya and Shat'l making preparations for collecting the elemental orbs. Overall, these were the kinds of scenes that really make up Kirby Adventure as a whole. Sometimes, it can be funny. Sometimes, it can be plot-related. And sometimes, it can be sad and/or cute.

No, you won't get to find out who the red eyes villain is. Not for a very long time. But rest assured, it. Is. Going. To. Be. EPIC.

The final scene to this segment was one that I had planned at the very start of this segment. To The Tower was the end of chapter 1 of Kirby Adventure, and the only special thing that happened was the 100th comic special. This time, at the end of chapter 2, we needed some closure. In essence, we needed some ultra special splash page of some sort. That's where the aurora scene showed up. And that's what really made this scene great.

Poor little Caiya also overworked herself. As a last thing to talk about, really, another good point about Jetting Across The Ice was how much I was able to work with the smarter personality of Caiya, the one I actually prefer to work with. While the ever-silly DONUTS personality is superbly popular, smart Caiya is the more defined character in my opinion, and that's why I love working with her. This entire segment actually became a great way to star Caiya in a segment, which was something I really appreciated.

So, with that, tomorrow begins a new segment! FINALLYYYYYYYY!
