Pay Day was when all my prior setting up was finally going to come to fruition, and I was going to get the storyline of Kirby Mass Attack to happen. In the process, I decided the best way to go about doing so was to get King Dedede involved again, for the first time in 4 years.

Among a couple of other things, I start mentioning Saia having a birthday coming up soon, because that was originally going to be the point where Kaxo's Tedhaun coin would activate. Kaxo would put a lot of effort into planning for Saia's birthday party, and something would go wrong. I'll get more into it in a bit, but for now, that's why Kaxo will keep bringing it up for a while as something he's working on in the background.

Did anybody notice yet that the Kirbies in this chapter are the exact same ones who shared screentime with these Waddle Dees? The rest of the KAS was never seen with these two. Higher wages!? VACATIONS?! I'm pretty sure this is not Dedede...

Dedede Resort is the third world of Kirby Mass Attack out of five, and is one of the many Popopo Islands that the game takes place on. Since I was involving basically every aspect of Mass Attack's lore and worldbuilding that I could, including the Squeaks and their airship and whatnot, it was only reasonable to involve Dedede as well.

Since I wanted Kirby to go to the Islands so that the story of Mass Attack would remain the same as the games, unchanged, that meant that I had to figure out why he wouldn't take the squadmembers. The opening cutscene of Mass Attack simply shows Kirby lounging around before being ambushed by Necrodeus, the antagonist of the game, so I worked that into Kirby being on a vacation. Subsequently, that led me to bringing back the King's Waddle Dees and using their prior help to reward Kirby with a solo vacation, thus leading into Mass Attack's plot smoothly off-screen.

Man, I LOVE writing these Waddle Dees! They're just so silly. I can see why BattleStarX started his own side-comic just to feature his own Dee characters.

In case you couldn't tell, I'm basically setting up Mass Attack here. In fact, I've been setting up Mass Attack since Tree To Tree. The quote from Banai that I restated here? That was written with Pay Day's concept in mind. Gives you some context in how much I plan ahead sometimes, eh?

SuperScratchkat: When the author of a comic, there is an option to "manage webcomic" from the profile. Select that, and from there, click "comics". There should be a section titled "Chapter," under which is a button with the name "New Chapter." Click that, and BOOM, NEW CHAPTER!

Also, for futures, I recommend private messaging someone as opposed to writing a comment in the comic itself.

Seen in the background of the forest is a Skully, one of Necrodeus's ghostly minions. The idea was that Shadik arriving here caught the notice of the villains, thus alerting Necrodeus to Kirby's upcoming presence while on vacation and helping lead into the plot of Mass Attack.

The Waddle Dees basically were a precursor to a lot of the behavior of Leo the Magician himself, and as such, I've basically treated writing him in a lot of ways like I'm writing a Waddle Dee: highly enthusiastic and somewhat oblivious.

As a result, I actually cribbed from myself once, and reused the gag line from the first panel in a Leo comic. Absolutely nobody ever noticed, because the audience crossover between KA and Leo isn't exactly high.

Quirby64_:D: That's actually far more trouble than it's worth when it comes to kirbies, who, if I remember the sprites right, have one dot where there mouth is. And the small size of their bodies along with its spherical nature also make it much more of a pain than, say, an SNES Mega Man mouth.

Now DeDeDe's is quite possible, considering its size, but made more complicated by its fairly odd shape.

When working with sprites, sometimes you need to make concessions.

It would kinda help in my opinion.

Since I wanted Kirby to go on a vacation where he'd wind up in a life-or-death situation against an evil skeleton magician that nearly killed him canonically, I had one more hurdle to explain how he wound up going there: Shat'l.

Shat'l being a psychic meant that, for all intents and purposes, he should be fully aware of what Kirby will be about to go through, and realistically he should protest (or at least warn Kirby about it). Instead of trying to ignore the issue or nerf Shat'l by having him not be aware, I tried going in the opposite direction, and made him entirely aware of it.

Instead, I went with the angle that Shat'l had to send Kirby on the vacation unaware, because any amount of preparedness or not-going-there-ness would result in disastrous consequences, so Shat'l had to knowingly go with the lesser of two evils and lie to Kirby.

As far as uses for Shat'l and his psychic powers are concerned, this was probably the one time I'm happy with how it turned out. Turning it into a personal character drama where he's literally burdened with knowledge and can't change the timeline was a lot more interesting than him simply being questionably-omniscient or confusingly not-omniscient.

All of the scenes shown in Shat'l's mind bubbles are cutscenes from Kirby Mass Attack, mainly the opening cutscene where Necrodeus ambushes Kirby, and the ending cutscenes where Kirby destroys Necrodeus.

Shat'l mentions looking into an alternate timeline where Necrodeus and his Skull Gang weren't stopped here and now, and finds it absolutely terrifying and unseen. This was partially just a justification for Kirby being left unaware, but it originally held another purpose.

Kaxo's Tedhaun coin was going to originally create an alternate timeline from Kaxo making a wish in the heat of the moment that Shadik never existed, after Shadik accidentally messed up the decorations or something that Kaxo worked so hard to prepare for Saia's birthday.

After wishing Shadik didn't exist, Kaxo would find himself in a timeline where that was the case, and it would be a massively horrible timeline as a result. Since Shadik never existed, he never saved the vast majority of the cast when Galacta Knight unleashed his ultimate attack, so a lot of the main cast was just dead in this universe. This led Kirby to being massively depressed and isolated, instead of a leader of a Squad.

Since Kirby would be depressed in this timeline, he wouldn't have been adventuring, and thus wouldn't go on this vacation to the Popopo Islands, and thus Necrodeus would wind up having free reign in this alternate timeline. The result was going to be some pseudo-mind control, pseudo-zombie invasion sort of deal, I didn't quite nail the details down.

Either way, the point was that there was a plan to have Kaxo wind up in this very alternate timeline that freaks Shat'l out so much here, so Shat'l mentioning it in his thoughts here wasn't originally just a throwaway line but actual set-up and a teaser for a future segment. It never came to pass, though, so instead you'll just have to be like me and live with the knowledge of what could've been.

LOGIC! It is a sign of weakness unless it is Ultimate Yoshi.

In Kirby Mass Attack, King Dedede gets possessed by the Skull Gang and fights against Kirby while riding this balloon. It's a bit of an odd Dedede fight in the grand scheme of things, but it made for effective transportation.

Wait a minute... isn't that the balloon from the Dedede Resort boss stage?

I mentioned in an earlier annotation that there were some minor thoughts of mine to connect Yoshi & Kirby with Kirby Adventure in subtle ways, with Yoshi & Kirby eventually being revealed as a surprise prequel to Kirby Adventure that never came to pass.

The use of Simirror here was meant to actually be one of those subtle crossover moments, since in Yoshi & Kirby's original run, I gave King Dedede a Simirror as his main advisor. While I never reached that point in the revised version of Yoshi & Kirby before it got cancelled, I did plan on keeping Simirror around as Dedede's advisor there eventually.

Thus, I elected to throw Simirror in here too, just as a little wink wink nod nod that would make more sense in hindsight. But the benefit is that it's also natural enough that even without the actual crossover prequel element at play, it's not like it doesn't make sense, either. A Simirror being Kirby's tour guide is certainly still viable and reasonable, so, it all worked out regardless.

I've been wondering this in all of the Kirby comics (just kidding that's never an important thing blah blah blah etc. etc. But still.).

@StS: Probably just an Alternate Universe deal. There are a few comics where Kirby can't talk (or, talks but somewhat limited - I mean, he DOES canonically say "Hi" occasionally).

If the context didn't make it obvious, that's Necrodeus in the bony flesh. Between segments now, off-screen, Kirby will wind up going to the Popopo Islands and the events of Kirby Mass Attack will occur unchanged:

Kirby will be lounging around, before getting surprise-blasted by Necrodeus's magic rod. It will split Kirby into 10, and 9 of the Kirbies will be destroyed, but the one remaining Kirby will survive and follow the soul of the complete Kirby, represented by a star (and the player's stylus, since it's a touch-controlled Nintendo DS game).

The star-soul of Kirby will guide the remaining Kirby across the islands, bringing him back up to 10 through food consumption (it's a Kirby game), and eventually rescuing the residents of the Popopo Islands from the Skull Gang's possession and control. He'd take the fight to Necro Nebula, the Skull Gang's hideout, and destroy Necrodeus for good.

Afterwards, Kirby would use Necrodeus's rod to restore himself to normal, and the one single fully-restored Kirby would ride a Warp Star back home, safe and sound, and all traces of the Skull Gang wiped out for good.

So, with only the second appearance of a major Kirby villain in the series, as well as the second appearance of text-that-isn't-Tahoma since Etam, AND the second appearance of a text bubble with white borders and text since the first appearance of Shadik, Pay Day comes to a close. That was a long sentence.


Pay Day was interesting for me to write, because right from the very get-go, I knew it's only purpose was to send Kirby to the Popopo Islands and have Mass Attack happen. However, I actually really enjoyed writing the segment.

Not only were Bandy and Fettuccine incredibly enjoyable to write, but I also had fun with Saia, Raize, and Shadik, as well as the lesser appearances of Dedede, Kaxo, Keito, and Vezo. For a set-up segment, I think this one was finally one worth reading, as opposed to Helping Hand or Meet The KAS.

I did drag it along, a bit, though. I intentionally made short pages simply so that I could extend the length to 17 parts. Why? Simple. Take a look at the comic number. Then, note what date is coming up in less than a week. Yeah.

So, you've got that to look forward to.

Oh hi. I just wanted to say something, since it kind of bugs me. You should consider putting up an update schedule on the description of the comic, since me and probably some other people have trouble actually knowing when another page will come out and kinda get frustrated due to the fact that we wanna see more. I'm just suggesting this, Ulti, you don't have to do it.

Finally, this is the last of the various bonus pages. These are pretty much always non-canon, for the record.

So, the big 500. Halfway to a thousand, and in only 4 whole years. It's interesting that despite this year of Kirby Adventure having the most consistent updates, it was actually the year with the least amount of comics uploaded, clocking in at an even 100.

I'm excited about the future of Kirby Adventure, though, and I've got lots of more stuff planned. The next segment is going to be a good one, that much I know. Though, admittedly you're gonna have to wait a bit on that one. School's really rough for me right now, so for now I'm going on short comic hiatus until my APs are done mid-May. This also includes Yoshi & Kirby, as well as my Let's Plays (though I'm in-between those anyway, since Superstar Saga and Red Rescue Team finished a few weeks ago).

I know the fan number is one less than it actually is in the picture, but that's not the important part here. Provided I don't lose a big number of fans anytime soon, Kirby Adventure has officially beaten out the long-abandoned Kirby Battle for the 2nd-most-popular Kirby comic on Smack Jeeves! What great timing. The next and final hurdle is overcoming A Kirby Komic's fan count. Let's see how long that takes, if at all.


Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go see if I can get myself a copy of Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
