Technical Difficulties is the first segment in a long while that I just flat-out still like, no asterisks needed. Finally, after all the years of writing, I figured out a groove to work with.

Case in point, this first segment of Chapter 4 is yet another attempt at the basic formula of "Kirby and friends go out and help someone who needs it" that was promised in The First Mission and only ever worked in To the Tower. After the failures of some of the other segments, most notable Tree to Tree, I had been able to figure out all of what I needed to actually write a good version of this idea.

So, this time around, we have a smaller cast, more client involvement, and an actual plotline to tell and not just random unrelated meandering and exploration. It flows really nicely, has a lot of characterization at play and humor abound, and is overall just a blast. Especially compared to what came beforehand.

Warp Stars don't tend to change color, though there are a few special cases of Warp Stars that are differently colored, such as Kirby Air Ride's orange-tinted Flight Warp Star. The vehicles being color-coded to the driver, though, was me just doing it for the sake of a visual gag with Kaxo, Vezo, and Caiya in the next page.

It's a pretty hilarious visual gag to me, though.

I doubt anyone will read this, but in the first panel Wheelzen said ".... of my my beloved..."

Meta Knight is the leader of his own group known as the Meta-Knights. It's a bit of a confusing name in that regard, but outside of specific characters in the games such as Captain Vul and Sailor Dee (neither of whom show up in this comic), he also has a few more repeatable minions. Repeatable in the sense that they're like Star Wars Stormtroopers, there can be multiple of these guys, and they're known just by their specific monikers and types of warriors.

So, there have been consistently four main types of Meta-Knights: Axe Knights in the skull mask, Trident Knights who look like ninjas, Mace Knights who have the three spikes and sunglasses-visor eyes, and the unseen Javelin Knights that are more robotic and are kind of like floating dreidels.

Jayk is a cameo character and not an actual canon Meta-Knight.

This Gordo is Captain Stitch, another miniboss from Kirby's Dream Land 2. Though, unlike Master Green, Captain Stitch does also reappear in the game's SNES sequel, Kirby's Dream Land 3. Those are Stitch's only appearances though, so like with Green, I had a lot of room to work with for developing Stitch's personality.

Unlike with Green, who was comically pathetic in a sympathetic way, I wound up making Stitch comically pathetic in an amusing way. He wound up being a complete idiot who was a blast to write for.

During their comments, when Kirby reaches the outer hull area and Meta Knight wants his knights to go fend him off, they reply with these quotes about it being cold, too high, and scary. So, it felt like a fitting reference to make here.

Heavy Lobster is a robotic boss found in a few areas of Kirby Super Star, with the primary fights against it being on Meta Knight's Halberd. There's another one on the Planet Mekkai later in the game, creating the idea that they're mass produced robots.

You wouldn't believe how fitting this segment's name is considering all the crap that's been happening. First my recording programs glitch out on me and refuse to cooperate, then the Kirby Adventure website freaks out for no reason and only for specific people on specific browsers, and then my entire computer refuses to open any sort of My Computer-esque folder without freezing the computer solid for 10 minutes. I had to save files on an external hard drive and completely wipe my computer's hard drive, resetting it to factory status, in order to get things back to normal. Except, of course, now I'm missing tons of programs (including recording and editing programs, so here's hoping I can get those back before I run out of pre-edited videos). I also lost Photoshop, but unlike last time, a friend of mine was ready with a link to download a free version of the latest Photoshop: CS6! And MAN is it a freaking upgrade compared to Elements 10.


This comic also would've been out two days ago had my computer wanted to work for me.

I considered having the last panel be a cutaway to Kirby's Dream Adventure, featuring Master Green in Kurie's hospital, but I didn't quite know what to do with that, as I have no idea what Green is doing there as of right now.


I tried fixing up the segment select buttons in the code, but I couldn't get them to work properly at ALL. At least, not in the position that they used to be in. So now, I accidentally got them to the top of the page, where they shall remain unless I decide to experiment again and try and put them where they used to be (and get them to work for everybody.)

If this placement DOESN'T work for your computer/browser, though, definitely let me know. I may end up needing to completely change the site's layout if necessary to get it to work for everyone.

You guys have no idea how much getting that sprite of the ship from Kirby Mass Attack drove me mad. Absolutely NO screenshots of the thing exist at 100% zoom, and only one screenshot of it exists period (and its incredibly blurry). So, I had to go into the rom and get a screencap myself. However, every rom I could find of Mass Attack was broken and wouldn't work. I wanted to put the ship in back in like part 4 or 5, hence why Vezo "can't see any smaller ship". Later, I discovered it was my EMULATOR that was the problem, so I redownloaded it. Then, I popped in the rom, and I was good to go, right? Nope. Daroach doesn't bring that ship into play until somewhat later into the first world (which is really long, like most of the worlds in that game), so I had to suffer through all the tutorial and slow first levels. I decided to take a break from replaying the game, made a save state file so that I could pick it back up whenever necessary. I then didn't really need to use the ship sprite until today's comic, where I really wanted to finally show the freaking thing. So I opened my rom and my emulator and went to load the save state. PROBLEM AROSE AGAIN. My recent wiping of the hard drive and storing files onto an external hard drive somehow broke the save state file, and it was corrupted. So I had to completely replay through Green Grounds JUST TO GET ONE FREAKING SPRITE. Goddamn it, that was painful to even just recite.

Since there are Heavy Lobsters (or, at least, one of them) on the planet Mekkai, I was subtly hinting at one piece of Vezo's backstory by giving him knowledge of fighting them, as well as his metalworking knowledge seen earlier. Since he also had two Gim friends, the idea was that Vezo originally hailed from off-world, not from Planet Popstar but instead from the technological planet Mekkai.

It didn't really amount to anything in the comic itself, but it was a neat idea and perhaps in another timeline, it could've wound up mattering in some way.

Yeah, Axe Knight's appearances look lazy. As if he were too bored to care. Not being mean, just want to say. Really.

While Kirby normally has his Stored Ability Sword in this comic, I at no point ever specifically said that he couldn't use his more traditional copy abilities if he inhaled the right objects or creatures. I just never really had the opportunity to give him the chance to get a different ability until now.

I kid you not, I have been attempting to put this specific scene of Kirby getting an ability into the comic since freaking To The Tower.
Other places I desired to finally put it in but either didn't have the time or cut the segment short were Jetting Across The Ice, Tree To Tree, and Master Of Puppets.

Luckily, neither of the crossovers went against this new information that Kirby can still use any ability he so desires as long as he inhales an enemy who gives that ability.

I'm going to give my opinions of this comic. This is not a bash, hate, or any sort of thing. I am not basing this review on anything but what is there in the comic.

First off, the panels. They are bland. Bland as bland can be. No resizing, no dynamic panels, no change of shape, nothing. The text boxes and bubbles are also uninteresting.. They aren't special or different in any way, they are just dull. They are the same boring shape in every comic, with the same tail, or hook, same text (which isn't even a good text to start off with), same text size, and type. So yeah, that can be improved. Next, is the facial expressions. Their mouths don't move when they talk (and I know that can be seen as a annoyance more than a bad thing, but if you really think about it, you'll understand my point.) Also, with the ways the comics are structured, it's boring. The same box of panels, with no dynamic or shape differences, it's dull. Off of the comic type and bubbles, on to characters. These characters are just BORING. They are based off of one thing (ex; a emotion, feeling, etc) and have nothing that I can really say with all honesty to make me remember them. They are all one dimensional, and that's bad. Sure they change sometimes, but then they just go back to being what they always are, and that is not what character development is. The plot is okay, nothing really much to say here, it's similar to a lot of Kirby comics, which I have my opinions on, and won't bother to say them here, because it'll just be; good guys, bad guys, doom, anti-heroes, etc, etc, which really isn't all that original, since I've seen it a thousand times over, but yeah. Now, onto the dialogues. The dialogue in this comic is not really that humorous, or exciting when it comes to that point. It isn't suspenseful, or interesting. Sure there may be a few lines that are interesting, but really, to be honest, I haven't found any. I will now proceed with my personal comment to Ultimate Yoshi.

Ultimate Yoshi: If you bothered to read any of this, then I commend you, this was really wall of text-ish. But, these are my solid opinions of this comic, and I really have to say, that It needs work. If you would resize more often, practiced on your effects, added a few mouths or something to show that they were talking, then yes. I would like this comic, but at this point, it's too bland. It's hard for me to read this, without any of, in my opinion, the necessary things in sprite comics. Do not think that this is a hate comment, or a bashing, this is merely constructive criticism and ways for you to improve and hook me, and many other readers, in. If you would look into what I say, you might earn more popularity. That is all from me. Tally ho.

I must say that it's a rare thing to find someone so logical and methodic about something they dislike on the internet. For that, I commend you. However, many of the reasons you listed for disliking the comic are the very reason I like it so much. For example: a resized panel tends to struggle with pixelation (unless the comic is hand drawn, but that's not the case here), which can make the pages difficult to comprehend well. The plain-jane, colored text bubbles leave the pages uncluttered and the dialogue organized. Oftentimes decorated text bubbles become difficult to read or force the dialogue to be at least a bit disorderly. When mouth movements are employed in sprite comics, the effect tends to be very limited and in my opinion, the mouth is usually better off left in a closed position than forced into a shape that looks unnatural or unbecoming of a character. Kirbies especially have a really sensitive mouth design. Additionally, the fact that each character is based on his (or her) own respective personality trait with the exception of Caiya is actually a draw to me. It keeps the characterization of each member of the Squad nice and solid, and it actually may help to serve as a self-protection barrier for Ulti, so as to prevent him from making someone act extremely out of character without reason. While I'm at it, I'll mention that Ulti started this comic when he was about twelve, and has diligently worked to not break the canon. To improve a comic so much without suddenly changing everything is a challenge in and of itself. When all is said and done, it looks like the comic you're looking for is rich in story with vivid character design and spectacular, original environments, whereas Kirby Adventure Squad is designed more or less one joke per page, sung loosely to the tune of plot; a method which is suiting to a video game-oriented comic without beating (much) of the actual game series' canon into a pulp. I hope I didn't come off as rude or as trying to prove all your points wrong, because that wasn't the intent at all and, admittedly, some of the recent chapters could have been handled better. I'm not sure how I would have handled it myself because for the most part each of said chapters was based around a cameo of another character with a pre-tailored story. When one tries to fit two stories together, it doesn't always look very graceful, beautiful, or exciting, but at least he gave it his all. This web comic, working alongside what I personally consider its sister comics (20 Times Kirby and Kirby's Dream Adventure), is among the best Kirby comics on SmackJeeves to date even if sometimes the characters get a little far out there (Xyxxa, anyone?). Once again, keep up that civil attitude and you'll go far, at least in the internet world. This is Centropyge, signing out.

While I personally do prefer comics like the ones you're describing, this comic just wouldn't be Kirby Adventure if it had all the bells and whistles. Furthermore, that isn't Ulti's style. His style is to keep it simple, and it works very well for him IMO.

Super Crash Kirby: Thanks!

After Caiya's breakdown in Master of Puppets, I wanted to try to at least give the dumb mode of Caiya a bit more attention in some fashion. A moment that would make her not be just pure asininity. While I'm not happy with the dumb Caiya overall, this was admittedly probably her best use in the entire comic (and also, iirc, one of her last ever uses. I mostly veered towards intelligent Caiya after this point.)

That's supposed to be the Wheelzonia, but I'm not that good at making very detailed sprites. I tried to edit a Kabula sprite into looking like the Mass Attack ship, but I don't think it worked to well. It's still better than simply resizing the original sprite, though.

Original Comic Revised Comic

This is Daroach, leader of the Squeaks. He's a professional thief, though in this comic I made him a bit scatterbrained.

The Wheelzonia, as asked by the cameo-owner Drawkey, was mostly just a macguffin for Wheelzen to chase after in Drawkey's notes. Since I've been busy setting up a lot of stuff for Kirby Mass Attack, though, I saw myself an opportunity to capitalize on.

Since in Mass Attack, the Squeaks have a previously-unseen airship piloted by Daroach, I decided to depict the acquisition of such an airship in Kirby Adventure. By turning the airship into Wheelzen's Wheelzonia, I not only tied the segment more into Kirby lore than it would've otherwise, but also got to include even more canon characters for a change.

With Meta Knight, Daroach, Captain Stitch, the Meta-Knights, and Heavy Lobster all included, this was perhaps the most "Kirby" segment of Kirby Adventure I ever wound up making.

I tended to have a theme of abruptly teleporting characters in these adventurous segments, huh? At the very least this time, it's related to the plot in some fashion, and the characters get to actually react to it all.

This page reveals that the imposter Meta-Knights are actually TACs. TACs are enemies that can copy the appearance and abilities of any Kirby creature, hence why they're able to disguise themselves here and use magical abilities like a real Simirror.

A lot of lategame Kirby bosses, especially final bosses, have the ability to teleport around the arena. Daroach is a bit of a fake-out final boss, since he gets usurped by being possessed by Dark Nebula in Kirby Squeak Squad, but regardless he also has the ability to teleport around in the games when you're fighting him.

Since he's a thief, I figured I could reasonably repurpose the sprites of Daroach teleporting into ones where he's also turning invisible, for maximum sneak effectiveness. It's not something he's normally capable of, but I feel like it makes sense for him regardless.

Hey look, Meta Knight actually had decently long lines of dialogue. That's a new one.


Some of you may have noticed that the banner for Kirby Adventure changed a bit! The old banner I've been using since mid-2011 I felt was getting a bit outdated, so I upgraded it a bit. The logo now uses my preferred font of Grilled Cheese, and I've replaced Aika with Ryka because Ryka is a much more relevant and prominent character.

Not only has the banner been updated, but the cast page has well! I've spent the past three days working on new buttons and profiles to completely remodel the characters page with new information and characters! The one downside is that photobucket is slightly screwing up and not linking directly to the images sometimes, but you can still click and read every single one of the new profiles. I'll work on fixing that soon, I'm a bit sick of cast pages at the moment though.

HOLY SMOKES THE BANNER WAS CHANGED. Looks good, so I'm not complaining. Also Aika hasn't appeared in so long I almost forget who she is. Almost.

MetaKnight's black text doesn't really look that good with a blue background. May I recommend making the black text white or light blue? That might make it more readable.

Oh right, teleportation. The KAS is gonna have loads of fun with that, huh?

Kirby's had to deal with a lot of baddies over the years who don't really have completely thought-out plans. Take King Dedede, for instance. WHY exactly would he steal all the food in Dream Land? What purpose does this serve? Even the more bad baddies, like Dark Matter, all that they're gonna achieve in the long run is possessing everything. What then? That's about it.

There were 2 times where Dedede was good. The first is in Kirby's Adventure, where he broke the Star Rod to keep Nightmare from destroying Dream Land. The second was in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, where was a playable character.

Because kirby stepped

If you recall me briefly mentioning Tedhaun during the Such an Odd Eight annotations, when Panee was shown as a ghost: This is Tedhaun, in coin form.

Tedhaun is a miniboss who gets unlocked in the late-game of Kirby Squeak Squad. He replaces some other minibosses in the game after he's unlocked, and grants the Ghost ability when defeated. He doesn't do anything else particularly special, other than being unlocked by collecting pieces of a coin from various treasure chests across the game.

In Kirby Adventure, I had very big plans for this Tedhaun coin. Spooky, important ones, no less. Because of motivation issues and plan changes, though, this coin wound up being a lot of set-up for nowhere near the intended pay-off, though, so keep that in mind when seeing Kaxo pick it up here.

The way the coin worked was that, instead of just being something that'd summon a ghost, my idea was that the spirit of Tedhaun was constantly within the coin, and he was functioning akin to a sort of genie. He'd hear any wishes nearby and grant them, and the idea was that there was going to be a quite devastating and unintended wish made later down the line.

So, a bit of a foregone conclusion when the Wheelzonia was revealed as Daroach's ship from Mass Attack, but Daroach got teleported back to the airship by the Tedhaun coin, and so used the opportunity to hightail it out of there. Mission unsuccessful for the KAS, but hey, it was a fun time at least!

Kaxo, the answer to question is fairly obvious: Entertainment purposes, of course!


Technical Difficulties has now ended, and boy, this sure was an interesting segment for me. I feel like it's started Chapter Four on a very good note. A highly enjoyable segment to write, filled with both adventuring and jokes, I snuck in some set-up, got some good characterization in, and finally used two cameos I'd had for a few years. Yeah, this was a good segment for me.

The title still makes no sense, though. (Unless you factor in the fact that while this segment has gone on, I had several technical difficulties in regards to keeping the site active AND recording my Let's Plays, but that's neither here nor there.)

I don't have too much to say about this segment, but one thing I definitely want to mention is that I love the characterization I put into this. Kaxo, Vezo and Caiya were nice, subtle additions, but the one I especially loved was Kirby. For the first time in a segment since The Beginning..., I've actually enjoyed writing Kirby in a segment.

He's actually the reason for the month-long time gap between Master of Puppets and Technical Difficulties. He needed to change as a character for the better, but having it be overnight would be completely unrealistic development. As we can see a month later, he's not lost his serious side entirely (he's pretty serious when the Halberd begins firing, for example), but he's also not afraid to let loose and act silly (Air Kirby, calling Vezo out on not seeing the Wheelzonia, etc.) This is a great step in Kirby's character. Plus, there was the scene with Axe Knight, where Kirby is getting mad while interrogating. When Saia calls him out on his, he says that he didn't notice and lets her try. He's actually trying to change, and that scene proves it. He couldn't just get better overnight, or even in a month, but by showing these scenes, it's clearly evident that he's TRYING to follow Caiya's advice from the last segment. I just... really like what I'm doing with him. He's finally a character I can look forward to writing again.

It was a bit of a surprise to me to see that this segment took me six whole months to complete. It really didn't feel like it was that long, and at first it seems like this SHOULDN'T have taken that long. But, once you factor in all of the consistent Yoshi & Kirby updates, then it makes a lot more sense. Rather than 40 parts, this was the equivalent of an 80 part segment, in a way. Which means that I made great time with this segment, considering that the 60-part Master of Puppets also took six months and DIDN'T have Yoshi & Kirby updating. I'm on a roll, it seems.


As for the next KA segment, really, don't expect much out of it. It's gonna be a short, little set-up segment, similar to Helping Hand. Won't take too long, then you'll have another (hopefully) entertaining segment to follow.

For now, though, I'm signing out.

This was a very cool segment. I agree with Jarkes in that it is closer to the comic as it was in the begginning, but this is a lot cooler because of character development. So yeah, GO ULTI!!!
