Master of Puppets

Part 1

Ulti's Notes:

Master of Puppets, as a new segment, was conceived as a character-focused adventure, taking extra time to emphasize and expand upon a lot of the characters. In some ways, it was a bit forced, but overall, I think it turned out alright. It utilized a bit of a clichéd premise to good effect, I think.

Original Author's Comment:

03/23/13
And thus begins the new segment. It's very pink so far.

I wonder if there is a evil version of Saia? Now that would be weird.

Gigi19972010
03/26/13
DarkMario1000:

I will make this very clear, then:
- Take a look at TitF. Let's say it at some point starts digging its own grave. Why? Simple, the single fact of another character with author powers appearing out of nowhere destroys the whole logic of the thing. So, you may ask, what does it have to do with this segment? The same thing happened here, however, the thing which caused this was the evil clones thing, such a cliché and cheesy thing, no matter what happens next.
- Nonsense and a weak plot twist. Explaning why it's weak would take time, so I won't unless someone really wants to know it.
- Not to mention how the comic changed its course dratically since the day it started, and that's not a good thing.
The point of pointing flaws is to make sure they won't happen anymore, people pointed flaws in my comics and I won't let them happen again. But I've seen pointed flaws in this comic which happened again. I'm trying to help here... :/

A Different Type of Comic

Ulti's Notes:

This, now THIS, is where everything went to shit. The above Thanksgiving comic was originally a bonus released around Tree to Tree, as something unimportant and silly. It replaces the original comic, viewed if you click 'Original Comic' there.

The Original Comic was the stupidest decision made during the whole Gigi/Kaxo debacle. I took an already contentious situation and made it 5 times worse by deciding that the best way to respond to Gigi's critical comments was through a comic format, where I responded to her using the "guise" of a snarky character to justify being even ruder.

Everything about this original page is stupid and idiotic, and I took some of the criticism way too seriously, but then it got amped up to eleven by the time that the comments rolled around. There was a reason why back in 2017 I purged the page in the archives.

What's nice about the way I'm formatting this particular reupload, though, is that I can keep the original comments as-is rather than separate image links like they originally were, since it's in a separate scrollable box that won't make the page really annoying, and it'll be just as easily glossed-over in this archive as it would be otherwise.

Anyways, while my stance on preservation means that this whole debacle WAS retained, I don't really recommend reading through it unless you enjoy a bunch of dumb teenagers being dumb teenagers, arguing about shit that really isn't important, and things getting heated unreasonably so and people just talking over each other.

I really just want to take all the people involved in these comments and just tell them all to shut up. I dragged a lot of people down to an obnoxious level, and while certainly the majority of the blame is mine for turning this into an issue at all AND responding in this idiotic way in the first place, people didn't need to respond so childishly either, it's just a goddamn mess. You're all kids, none of this really mattered in the end, go shut up and get off the computer and touch some grass, please.

Original Author's Comment:

07/27/17
This entire page has been purged from what it once was, and replaced with an older bonus comic that was linked sometime around Helping Hand but never officially uploaded to the main site before.

The reason for this is due to the sheer lack of flow the giant criticism-addressing page forced. Not only was it ridiculously long and honestly a really stupid way of bringing up criticism, but it forced people to care about something they might not even have wanted to. Thus, now that it's four years later, in order to make a comic reread more appealing, I've replaced it with this, as well as removing all comments.

However, for the sake of posterity, I've backed up both the original page as well as every single comment that still remained on the page (one person's account was banned, so their comment wasn't around anymore).

Part 4

Ulti's Notes:

This is when the idea of "evil clones fighting the main squadmembers" turns a bit iffy and slowly gets derailed. I don't know if it was purposeful or not, but I just kinda eventually stopped writing the clones as being particularly evil or bad, and some of the later ones hardly even displayed any animosity or different traits to the originals.

It didn't ruin the segment by any means, but it is a bit odd considering the entire premise of the segment was 'evil clones', and I didn't stick with it til the end.

It's the effect of my style of writing being pretty in-the-moment, and me still being very inexperienced relatively and not having my writing style down-pat yet. I was still pretty variable about the events and story beats, changing things when I felt I was going in a different direction.

Luigi_96: Why, whats wrong with intelligence? with intelligence, we know that the mathematical equation 5+5=10 is not actually math, just notation of the implied existence of "math" a similar concept with clocks and time. "time" was just a theory made by humans to help people know when and where to be. The world decided that they needed one singular "time" throughout the world, resulting in the creation of time-zones. Watches and clocks were created to accompany this "time". therefore, clocks are just a notation to support the implied existence of a theoretical substance. There is, in reality, no such thing as a "space/time continueum". There is, however, "the fabric of space", the very real substance that "space/time" was derived from. And that's just a little bit of intelligence!

Part 6

Ulti's Notes:

My idea of having a new orb in every Chapter of KA was going on in full force here. Since I neglected to have any new orb show up in the previous 5 segments, this was the last opportunity I had to insert one in, and I felt like this could be a good opportunity to do so.

Thus, I inserted in this new information about the orbs being incapable of being magically reproduced, and gave Not-Caiya a different orb, with the handwaved justification/guess-from-Caiya that when the magic trap couldn't duplicate the Ice Orb, it instead just nabbed whatever other random orb it could find, teleporting in the Spark Orb for Not-Caiya as a result.

Part 8

Ulti's Notes:

Not-Kaxo was the only cloned character who I wound up not writing like they were just another version of the character. While I had Not-Caiya claim that any sense of goodness in her was replaced with evil, it pretty quickly became apparent that that any animosity the clones had would quickly go away, the more they interacted with their main selves.

Not-Kaxo was the exception, since the story justification I went with after the 20 Times Kirby crossover was that he was created in advance of the other clones. He wasn't really written like Kaxo at all, in the end, I just kinda made him this big dick who liked to talk a lot.

In retrospect, it's a bit annoying to me that I didn't write Kaxo's clone as being more Kaxo-like, but alas. I was still a bit frantically trying to metaphorically duct tape together what I wanted Kaxo to be like properly, and so it wasn't the most well-thought-out in the long run.

Ulti's Notes:

Both in-comic and in various comments early on, there was a lot of degradation and mockery of the idea of an evil clone sequence. The idea was derided, lampshaded (as seen here), and all-in-all didn't start out too popular.

In retrospect, now that I'm more experienced as a writer, I can't help but be amused by how disliked the idea was, as if a cliché was some sort of dirty word or concept. Anything that's seen as "I know this from someplace" is, like, immediately declared unoriginal and thus not worth one's time. Meanwhile, I'm just sitting here going "yes, good, use a common trope and utilize it to explore your characters, Past Ulti. this is effective and you're starting to get how to write better, finally."

Like, I understand the wariness of a common idea, but clichés are clichés for a reason. Tried-and-true storytelling methods and ideas and premises are effective, and they help the more original parts of a story stand out more. A basic idea like this isn't a detriment when it's being used to explore the cast and how some of them tick, while being an otherwise simple and fun adventure to go on.

Some of the capitulation and degradation seen in my 2013 self, and the various annoyed people in the early parts' comments, is just kinda embarrassing and disappointing to see, nowadays. Don't let the haters get to you, Past Ulti, some of them really had no idea what they wanted out of writing.

Part 13

Ulti's Notes:

Because the background here was already white by default, I had no idea how to handle it cloning Shat'l. Thus, I came up with a dumb idea of a 'dreamscape' for them to fight, where they basically have fallen asleep and are duking it out in a shared dream where they can make anything happen.

I pretty quickly stopped showing these two fighting because I had less than zero ideas of how to actually represent that, and so Shat'l once again becomes a big detriment to the storytelling and one of the less-good aspects of this particular segment.

Jarkes:

Wow, I had no idea you guys wanted the comic to end so soon.

Gigi19972010
04/27/13
Ultimate Yoshi:

...How does wanting to know who a unrevealed villain is automatically makes you wanting the comic to end soon?
And if you are going to hold a mystery for so long, its revelation is going to lose its impact on the readers. Mainly because I know this comic won't end soon, and this villain is just so... How can I say... You don't think of him as important, you forget about him then you go "Hey, he exists." then he isn't revealed and you forget about him again. That's how I see it, at least.

Ultimate Yoshi
04/27/13
Gigi19972010: The villain known colloquially to the fans as "mysterious shadow guy" is, as most people guessed already, the main bad guy of the comic. His reveal is SUPPOSED to be secret, he's not going to be revealed anytime soon, heck, to be honest, I only showed him this early because I needed an explanation for how Talzo's gang escaped in Jetting Across The Ice. The villain is supposed to be a surprise when he does show up, the reason I haven't really brought him up since JATI is BECAUSE he's supposed to only be a presence right now, only influencing certain plot elements, and not being an active character. Obviously he's important, he's the freaking main bad guy. And holding off on the answer to a mystery doesn't make it lose its impact, if anything it gains it. Like, compare it to way back when, when Talzo's name was a mystery. Everybody wanted to figure out his name, and the more I held off on it, the more people wanted it. The same logic would apply to this situation.

Jarkes: There are going to be 10 chapters in all. Currently we're almost at the end of chapter 3.
Also, if you prefer those kinds of stories, suffice it to say that Kirby Adventure is not that kind of story. But hey, you can just pretend Talzo is the main villain for now, its not as if the red-eyes villain is doing all that much right now.

Omega Kirby
04/27/13
How do you post huge comics and fairly decent avatars? Because whenever I try to post something halfway decent, it rejects it because the file size is too big!

Gigi19972010
04/27/13
Ultimate Yoshi:

See, you compared two different situations, the only common thing between them is the fact that both were mysteries. The Talzo name thing was about revealing a name, of a character who as on-screen during all the mystery and during only less than one month. The shadow guy is about revealing the whole identity of the main villain of the comic, who is almost never mentioned and during years and years. See the difference? I just don't see the point of holding a mystery for so long, mainly when the character is at least supposed to be very important. Holding the mystery for too long doesn't help with the suspense, it kinda makes the mystery annoying. Note the "too", since I agree that holding the mystery for some time helps with the suspense positively. However, it must be also continuous, something that the fans are ALWAYS wondering about, and since your intention is to not "overuse" the mysterious villain, even though he is the main villain of the comic, the suspense will become annoying for the fans and also kinda pointless, since he isn't mentioned often when I think he should, isn't he the main villain? So, my point is, suspense is good, indeed, but too much suspense, held for so long and not continuously is bad. That's what I tried to say in my last comment.

Omega Kirby:

Host the image on another website, like imageshack.

Ultimate Yoshi
04/27/13
Gigi19972010: Alright, I think I'm understanding your point here. But the thing is, honestly what I've got planned just probably hasn't had the fan reactions that I was thinking of. The mystery villain was supposed to be introduced early on, people would notice him, but then the mystery villain wouldn't show up for a while and the fans would forget about him, which would make his (obviously planned-in-advance) reveal all the more surprising. I think the solution here would just to give the mystery villain a bit more screen time to remind viewers that he exists, and maybe drop a bit of intrigue to keep the mystery fresh.

Fighter Dee

Gigi19972010
Jarkes

Why do you keep complaining, the comic is his and he seems to already have some parts figured out, revealing the villain would speed it too much, and trust me when a comic goes too fast it end up being boring instead of intriguing, so I recommend, not order, to just enjoy the pages and not think about the MSG right now.

Gigi19972010
04/27/13
Ultimate Yoshi:

Bingo. That's where I was getting at.

Fighter Dee:

Huh, when did I complain? Now criticism means complaining? I'm not like "REVEAL IT ALREADY BECAUSE I WANT AND JUST THAT SINCE I LACK REASONS AND I'M JUST COMPLAINING BECAUSE WHY NOT HEY.". I don't understand your logic.

Luigi_96
04/27/13
Fighter Dee: While it IS his comic, he doesn't make it just so HE can enjoy it. How illogical would that be?
I'm mainly guessing here, but I'm pretty sure he makes it part because he wants to, and part so his fans can enjoy the story. So if the fans dislike something, they have every right to make a suggestion to him.

Ultimate Yoshi
04/27/13

Ulti's Notes:

This is another enemy from Kirby Mass Attack, since it seems I was on a bit hooked on throwing in references to Mass Attack wherever I could afford to. That game really is getting set up in advance, huh.

It's a Jellifrizz, and it floats around in either water or space and occasionally zaps with electricity, and when destroyed initially, it splits up into smaller Jellifrizz. It's a neat enemy and I enjoyed using one here to punish the two Saias.

Original Author's Comment:

Seems that Not-Saia didn't know that there would be a punishment for dissent like Not-Raize did.

That last panel has too many things. This deserves a counting.
8 clones
1 boss from another game
17 helpers
3 authors(Unless you count Gigi)
11 cameos
2 contest winners
2 gordos
15 villains
1 food item
15 green characters
7 red characters
10 blue characters
13 orange/yellow characters
15 purple/pink characters
and that's all I want to count now.

Ultizeta
07/27/17
The problem with revamping old pages is that it also requires revamping pages that reuse old pages' assets. I had to re-recolor the KDA cast and fix up the pages that reference Shadik's thoughts in Average Days.

Part 19

Ulti's Notes:

One could, if they desired, split Master of Puppets up into 4 main sections. If the first 18 parts were one section, introducing all of the clones in their own pages, this next section is the clone battles and interactions. I didn't always have the best attention span in terms of showcasing the clones with an equal amount of screentime, but I think some clones just lent themselves better to interactions than others.

Part 21

Ulti's Notes:

"hey let me infodump onto you about stuff you already know about yourself"

My solution to trying to get information about Kaxo into the field was so rushed and awkward, I really didn't have any better ideas than having Kaxo's clone just monologue about Kaxo TO Kaxo. It's kind of embarrassing, really.

Looking back, this would've at least been a better infodump had it been told by Not-Kaxo to the other Squadmembers, thus revealing to them Kaxo's justifications about how and why he picks on people like Vezo. But alas, hindsight truly is 20/20.

The actual justification itself, though, is one that I do like a lot. Kaxo being a dick to others wasn't particularly consistent, so to me it called into question what the difference was, and the answer I came up with was a matter of respect. As a result, I liked the idea that the reason why he bullies others, particularly Vezo, is out of an unspoken hidden desire to see weaklings prove themselves and become more capable. A form of tough love, if you will.

Obviously, that idea was completely incompatible with the Kaxo that Gigi wrote in the crossover, but instead of this dumb clone justification, I should've probably tried to come up with some other way Kaxo wouldn't have liked Raven. Maybe having him think Larry wasn't serious about killing Raven, and also feeling like Raven needed to be pushed into standing up for herself (or maybe I could've just said he really didn't like artists, "they need to get a real job" or something silly like that).

I don't think I was even remotely entertaining that train of thought, so caught up in the idea of "this is wrong" that I just couldn't fathom a way I could justify it, instead of... actually trying to properly justify it. The clone route was the easy way out, and I massively regret not trying harder, and not just because of the debacle it created in the comments and how I upset Gigi.

Original Author's Comment:

05/20/13
If this doesn't clear up why Kaxo had characterization issues in the crossover, then I honestly don't know what ever will.

Part 23

Ulti's Notes:

I watched one mental health video in 10th Grade of school and immediately decided to try to channel some similar real-life emotions into Caiya's fictional personality disorder. Seeing actual people affected by actual illnesses and how they felt about that sort of thing was a pretty powerful moment at the time, unexpectedly so for a boring health class, so it stuck with me.

Having been made to think about Caiya, it had me realize that at no point did I ever have her acknowledge her split personality, and how the sheer difference between the two might make her feel. Thus, it was an interesting result to try to channel that rough emotion into the character and break her down a bit.

Really, the only problem is that it's once again a solo experience, where it doesn't really impact her standing among the other squadmembers. Especially since two of her memories come from fellow squadmembers, it's a bit of a missed opportunity.

While the development is strong in this segment, my critical side just keeps making me think of where I could've improved, and the answer to me here is to have involved more of the characters at the same time such that they can be privy to each others' quirks and hidden depths. Creating stronger bonds as a result of the explained development, y'know?

Original Author's Comment:

05/25/13
We all sit back and laugh at Caiya's antics when she's being silly, but nobody's ever really considered how the smarter Caiya felt about that.

On a lighter note, I've decided that I am indeed going to do that review comic thingamajig. If any of you guys has a comic that they'd want to be reviewed by yours truly, just send me a comment or private message! Part 25

Ulti's Notes:

Raize was a character I enjoyed to write for, since he was a level-headed background-type character who tended to speak up mostly when he needed to. I could write him when relevant, and otherwise accept him being in a scene without worrying about him interacting with much.

This led to a lot of people in the comments having absolutely no clue what he was about, since his traits weren't very clearly spoken. They're absolutely there if you look for them with this understanding in mind, but the key thing is that you have to look for them.

Because of that, I wanted to give Raize this kind of conversation with his clone so that I could have something to point to for those who still didn't understand that Raize had these personality traits. It was a bit on-the-nose, but if I've learned anything from writing over the years, it's that sometimes even when you're as on-the-nose as possible, people will still not remember or understand what you're saying.

I mean, I've had a lesbian dragon in the Leo comics who's stated multiple times that she isn't into guys, and yet people still constantly ask why she doesn't want to fuck any of the boys in the comic. It's embarrassing.

Sapar
06/04/13
I know you're busy (and the dark matter segment is coming along great, by the way), and it's a bit early for Gigi to do another crossover. But like you said, it would connect the three comics nicely.

Ulti's Notes:

I don't actually remember who the original "Master of Puppets" was meant to be. I called them the Puppetmaster in my notes, and maybe they were an entirely original creation at the time, but the end result didn't turn out that way at all, as you'll find out.

Sometimes, plans can change for the better, mid-project. I'm certainly happy with this particular change, since it wound up being pretty fun to write for.

The awkward thing is that I do have pages like these, though, that tease a mystery for the identity of the Master, but it's... such an unguessable idea because of a few particular aspects about the mystery that provide false clues and red herrings. It's annoyingly nonfunctional as a mystery, or at least, a satisfying mystery.

06/07/13
Dark Mind sounds likely. After all, he DOES make clones of others. That's his signature power it seems.
And Mirror Kirby said he was guarding the mirror world in case he came back which means he likely isn't fully dead.

Sapar
06/07/13
When Kirby fought Wiz in "Tree to Tree," he said that he survived the battle in the Old Tower because he was "an entity of the Mirror world, which, after all, is very prone to shattering." The same logic would apply to Dark Mind, since he's from the Mirror World as well. Although, Dark Matter could work, considering that it comes back, like, 14 BILLION TIMES. Plus it can already transform, so making clones isn't too far-fetched.

Coincidentally, my "Bronchitis" is magically gone. Hmmm...

Omega Kirby
06/08/13
I've had a thought, what if the place where they are, is inside each of their minds, and at the same time, they're lying asleep in the floor of headquarters, and the 'clones' are just the evil part of each of them (or as evil as they can get) and whoever wins the fight gets control of their bodies!

Wait. What if where they are is actually the KAS headquarters and Hali is the "master" person.

Sapar
06/08/13
@RedKirby: What makes you say that? Do tell.

guestuser
06/08/13
Sapar
1: The KAS Headquarters location is unknown by everyone EXCEPT Hali.
2: Talzo has a base who's location is also unknown.
3: Talzo's master, who is very likely the same person who behind the creation of the clones, has the eyes of a kirby.
That's pretty much all I can think of right now.

Sapar
06/09/13
Ultimate Yoshi: I have a question that I know will probably get a no, but what the heck. If you don't really know how to make sprites, and take WAAAAY too long on it to finish a sheet, can you draw it out? I could ask you to do the recoloring, and I could attempt the extra stuff on my own.

Why does nobody ever listen when you warn them of incoming danger?

After all, Evil Overlord Rule #178 says: If I have the hero cornered and am about to finish him off and he says "Look out behind you!!" I will not laugh and say "You don't expect me to fall for that old trick, do you?" Instead I will take a step to the side and half turn. That way I can still keep my weapon trained on the hero, I can scan the area behind me, and if anything was heading for me it will now be heading for him.

Part 30

Ulti's Notes:

Raize being good at strategy and being level-headed means that when nobody else is stepping up, he's able to take charge effectively. I've always thought it was interesting, having a strategist and planner like him who would be a very effective leader in terms of ideas and getting things done, but doesn't actively want to lead either.

It's an interesting concept, one that I think I'd want to take further if I could take another crack at it. Perhaps going with low charisma, or someone who's not actually able to put their foot down and lead properly, just come up with the necessary ideas for it, that sort of thing. Really emphasize that preference on being in the background.

This will last two weeks, and during this time I most likely won't be able to update this comic. If you still want some Ultimate Yoshi randomness, however, feel free to stalk my YouTube channel, for I'll still try and keep up daily uploads there. The past few days, I've been editing up a video buffer for these next two weeks so that I can keep up my daily schedule. I'm sure you guys know how to get to my YouTube channel by now, so feel free to check that out while I'm gone.

I may be able to comment, however, so don't be surprised if you see me say anything on Smack Jeeves, even if I haven't updated.

Ulti's Notes:

These are all the various final boss encounters from various Kirby games that I've already annotated previously. If you want a refresher, go check out Jetting Across the Ice, or just google them or something.

Original Author's Comment:

07/21/13
There are a few instances of what Caiya mentions in the last panel:
http://kirbysadventure.smackjeeves.com/comics/1075301/to-the-tower-part-3/
http://kirbysadventure.smackjeeves.com/comics/1269387/from-dream-adventures-part-37/
There are more instances of Keito getting crushed or being stood on in the comic, but these are the only 3 times he's forced the character off of him.

Poor Nightmare, not even the two Kirbies remember his existance. Also, they didn't bring up Yin-Yarn because, while the Epic Yarn storyline happened, they barely came into contact with Yin-Yarn cause Kaxo burned him to death. Therefore, they don't really remember him. Plus, none of this is Yarn based, so the same problem that the suggestion of Drawcia caused is evident here as well.
Also, Mass Attack and Return To Dream Land haven't happened yet.

Part 35

Ulti's Notes:

This is the point where any illusion of the clones being evil is just gone now. While a couple of them, like Caiya and Vezo, kept up being a bit mean and fighting for a while, the others just kinda started cooperating. I do wish that I had been a bit more consistent with these guys, or at least had better justifications for why they switched sides.

Part 37

Ulti's Notes:

And this is why the identity of the Master was nearly unguessable: because this is Master Green, an entirely non-magical fellow, despite one of the few hints for the Master's identity being that they had magic powers. Oops.

Anyways, Master Green is a jellyfish miniboss from exclusively Kirby's Dream Land 2 on the Game Boy, who gives the Spark ability when defeated. He's an extremely minor antagonist enemy with no clear story purpose or charaterization, he just exists as an obstacle in that game and nothing more.

Bringing him in here basically let me turn him into anything I wanted to, so the route I went was a disgruntled ex-minion type of character who really wanted to be above his level and go hard at something he wasn't cut out for. Master Green is essentially above his pay grade here, despite trying his best with a borrowed magical rod, which led to a sympathetically and comedically pathetic villain here.

Original Author's Comment:

07/26/13
I have absolutely no idea what to say about this.
I'll just sit back and watch for any reactions that I receive.

The real question is: how exactly does he use the bathroom?

Also, the KA fan known as Little Leaf is creating an audiobook for Kirby Adventure, and needs some voice actors to play the characters in the comic. If you're interested, she made a forum about it all here: http://www.voiceactingkirbies.proboards.com/

Wow, he fits RedKirby's/my bill almost perfectly. it's original, it's unexpected, and he has kirby-esque eyes, so he could be Talzo's master as well. This, my friends, is da BIG BOSS!

BWT, RedKirby's conditions are on Part 26, originally hypothesizing about Hali being da big boss...

Sapar: I actually don't think he's Talzo's Master. How do explain the glowing red eyes he had? Or the fact that he was able to block out "certain aspects of Gigi's memory" as Shat'l put it. While he may be affiliated with Talzo's Gang I still think we have yet to see who the real Big Boss is.

Sapar

@RedKirby: the glowing eyes could have been an exaggeration, or his eyes could actually glow in the dark:) He also gots his awesome wand to block Shat'l from Gigi's memory.

Part 38

Ulti's Notes:

This was one of the few times in the entire history of my writing any comic, at all, where I actively scripted out the entire page in advance of making the page. I feel like it's a bit noticeable considering how many text bubbles I had to shrink the dialogue of in order to get them to fit within the panel: I didn't write any of the lines with panel consideration in mind.

Original Author's Comment:

07/30/13
This comic was a pain to make. It's probably my longest non-milestone comic.

The reason why it's so long is because there was a lot of talking that needed to be done before the upcoming battle (which I'm pretty certain you all knew was coming) and I didn't want to drag on with a bunch of comics with them talking even more, I've already got like three in a row earlier.

Plus, now you need to scroll down a bit before you get to see Not-Shat'l struck in the face with MG's magic blast, making it more of a shock.

Ulti's Notes:

And now, the third of the four ways you can sorta consider splitting up this segment. We got through the introduction, and through the clone battles, so now we're at the fight with Master Green, and he's evened the odds with some mind control.

I developed this idea immediately after the previous comic with this group, but wanted to cut away to the other group of fighters before returning to this one to do the joke. I admittedly got a little antsy waiting even a little bit to do it, cause I liked the joke so much.

Both the fan art page and the links page have been updated recently! The fan art page has two new pictures, one by PurpleChickenPineapple and the other by Luigi_96! Speaking of the fan art page, DarkNut255, some of your submissions' links are no longer working, so if you could give me new links to those pictures, I would appreciate it.

As far as the Links page goes, I've updated a lot of the descriptions of the comics there, as well as re-adding Kirby: The Dee Army and removing My Game: Play and Kirby Blast, for those two comics no longer update. I also changed the order around a bit, for no real reason.

Ulti's Notes:

Since the clones existed, one of my goals with the fight sequence was to have them get erased from existence, since I didn't want a permanent addition of several character copies to the cast. Not-Shat'l's destruction was the instigator behind this fight scene, and now Not-Shadik has gone the same way.

Original Author's Comment:

Master Green's kind of a non-threatening villain, if you ask me.

Ulti's Notes:

Everyone was concerned about Master Green being stuck in a void, but nobody batted an eye about the Jellifrizz horde.

This was a page that I wasn't originally going to do, but then I had an idea and sent out a private message to a certain BattleStarX a few pages earlier. Since he was pretty flexible, I had the thought of giving Green a second chance, and letting him escape the void into the dimension of Kirby's Dream Adventure.

Only, of course, if BSX accepted him, but BSX welcomed the idea with open arms and happily took on the new character. So, while this was the last time I used Master Green, the character's story didn't end here and he got sent to the comic of KDA for a second chance on life and redemption arc.

I don't have any of those pages, though, because Green got pretty integrated into the world of KDA. As a result, it was less of a crossover and more just... a new character, so sharing what happened with Green would've just basically been posting KDA pages as one might normally expect.

BSX also admittedly somewhat unceremoniously introduced Green into his comic, without much focus or attention. A lot of Greens' story took place amidst other events, so there was never one single chapter I could consider "the Master Green arc" that would be postable anyway.

So yeah, unfortunately it's a bit of a shame to not have the exact specifics of what happened with Master Green anymore, but at least leaving it ambiguous is still somewhat satisfying in its own way. It didn't end in a confusing note for him here, it's just left up to interpretation what happened next for him now.

Ulti's Notes:

One of the things that rubs me the wrong way about how I handled Caiya is that even when I tried to focus on her smarter personality, and make her feel like a bit more of a single-package character than one single solitary character... she's still a bit sided towards the intelligent personality.

It gets considered the 'main' personality, and her dumber side is treated more as an obstacle and comic relief than anything pleasant. At least when written by me, it was never quite fleshed out properly, and I don't think pages like this were enough.

Really, it's just that her dumb personality was a mistake to begin with, being too one-note and too little of a character.

Writing the dialogue for this one was hard because it was hard to give Kirby lines that didn't make him sound like a jerk to Caiya's sillier personality.

Ulti's Notes:

I don't think I ever fully revealed the letter that Kaxo wrote to Raven, but I did write it out in full, and sent it to Gigi. This whole idea was concepted by me, but I did actually ask Gigi first before putting any of it into the comic, and she accepted the idea of Raven getting an interdimensional apology letter from Kaxo.

I wrote out the whole thing with the thought that Gigi would actually have Raven receive the letter on-screen and react to it that way, but Gigi elected to instead have Raven get it off-screen. Raven did eventually bring up the letter during a scene reprimanding Larry, giving him a speech about how much he sucked and comparing him to Kaxo, whom she received an apology from when technically he didn't even do anything to her because of the clone thing.

So while Raven did react to the letter a bit, and quoted a couple smaller parts of it, I don't think the actual full letter ever got shown off. BUT I checked my logs, and guess what, I still have the whole letter saved! So as newly revealed bonus content, here it is:

"To Raven –

Alright, before this begins, I just want to say that I have no real idea what I’m trying to say with this letter. Now that that’s been said… you probably don’t even remember me, at least if this time difference thing is true. I know for a fact that I’ve never even met you. Well, technically, I have. It’s complicated.

However long ago for you that it may be, you might remember that there were some dimensional travelers who accidentally ended up inside your home due to some sort of machine thing. I think that’s what happened. I’m sure you remember this because one of them helped tie you up and cover you in paint, dangling you upside-down with a taped mouth. The one I’m referring to was red-colored with darker red shoes, and was constantly grumpy and liked causing pain. Am I correct in this summary? Well, that Kirby was me.

Before you stop reading out of anger or whatever, you need the full story. See, technically, that Kirby was me. Only technically, though. The part of the story that you don’t know is that before that dimensional excursion, I was ambushed and captured by some random evil guy from Kirby’s past. I was cloned and that clone replaced me for a brief span of time. Said clone was much more brutal and cruel than I am. He’s been taken care of and locked up by now, but during the time that he was replacing me, he got sent to your dimension along with the others.

I’m not asking for your forgiveness or anything, heck, I don’t even know if any of this is really my fault. Even so, I feel like I needed to at least let you know about this, and let you know that I do apologize. While what that clone did wasn’t really my fault, I guess I kinda feel like it was anyway. He had tried to kill you (at least from what I heard) in what I must imagine was an incredibly uncomfortable and unfortunate manner, though my clone probably wasn’t your biggest concern considering according to the story I’ve been told, the one who had the idea to do that to you in the first place was a friend of yours. Whatever. Not even sure what I’m trying to say at this point. Here I am attempting to be all formal and stuff. That’s not really me. But the one you met who claimed to be me, that’s not really me either.

I don’t know if we ever will legitimately meet, though it certainly is possible if you still have that machine or if in my dimension we get our psychic to construct a portal there. If we do ever meet, though, at least I’ll be able to apologize to your face rather than through this.

- Kaxo"

Part 60

Ulti's Notes:

Chapter 3 is concluded now, and so too is what I've been calling the Dark Age of Kirby Adventure writing. From here on, it gets much better, which is a huge relief to me.

And as if to hammer it home that a new era is dawning, Kirby finally didn't end a segment with a grumpy quip. Instead, he can just relax and look forward to the future with optimism. And as he should, because the next segment to open Chapter 4 is one of my favorites from my memory.

Original Author's Comment:

09/09/13
And with that, the longest segment of KA history that spanned a total of just under six months is now completed! I've got a lot to talk about here, so prepare yourselves for a long author comment.

The idea for Master of Puppets, at its most basic, was conceptualized somewhere between Helping Hand and Tear In The Fabric. The basic idea was that the nine main characters of Kirby Adventure would face off against themselves, and each one would individually defeat the other by exploiting their weaknesses and using that as an advantage. It was conceived as a character-building segment, since the characters would need to learn more about themselves in order to defeat their mirror-image and escape insert-location-here. This was not really what happened in the final product.

Master of Puppets was originally planned to happen after Division Addition, but Gigi's insistence caused Such An Odd Eight to be wedged in between. This actually provided me with an opportunity to tie the two segments together, as originally, there wasn't even going to be a clone who started the whole scenario, the Squad would just suddenly wake up in the realm area thing. With Kaxo's characterization mishaps in the crossover, though, plus the fact that I needed to have something to do after I sent the 20TK characters back, I decided to introduce one of the clones early and have the two segments tie in together.

Not-Kaxo's introduction wasn't exactly executed perfectly, though. As some of you pointed out, the plot twist that Kaxo wasn't actually Kaxo was somewhat rushed and didn't have any build-up. The reason for that is because, well, it WAS kind of rushed. I shoved it in near the end because I needed something to fill up 4 comics at the end of Such An Odd Eight, and Kaxo already had some characterization issues when Gigi used him. That's why in the beginning of Such An Odd Eight, Kaxo pretty much acts normally. I hadn't developed the idea of Not-Kaxo until very late into Such An Odd Eight.

Creating the realms was interesting, because I really had no idea what they were going to look like. Basically, I just made an incredibly blocky undetailed black-gray-and-white area in Photoshop, and added filter unto filter unto filter until I achieved the result that was seen in the comic. In the end, I think the realms worked out okay, though I really wish that I had a better name to call them than simply 'realms' or 'areas'. Heck, their Photoshop names were called 'Puppetmaster Realms', so they really don't have much of a name.

When the time came to actually use the clones idea, though, the original plan of each Kirby fighting against their own clone and utilizing a weakness, that's when that original idea began to falter. While Not-Kirby started off a bit evil-ish, and Not-Caiya sort of followed suit, everyone else after Not-Kaxo's reappearance was hard to get the way I originally intended. The reason being was that trying to make some of them evil, especially Raize or Saia, just would not have worked and kept them in character as well. The clones couldn't act the same way of the original plan because they wouldn't be acting like the character they're a clone of. Thus, I began to change my plans a bit.

Raize and Saia's encounters were where I began to really change things, since the two groups didn't fight (well, technically Raize did, but in a game). Vezo's and Keito's encounters were done alright, but Shat'l's was probably the weirdest.

When it came to using Shat'l, the first thing I needed to do was establish why he didn't forsee Not-Kaxo showing up: his future sight was being blocked, and couldn't see anything with it at the moment. However, since I've previously established that Shat'l is physically weak, I didn't know what to do with him. I gave him that little dreamscape off-screen fight because, for one thing, it would allow him to fight with his clone, but for another, I couldn't really do a color change of the realm like I did with the other encounters. However, the dreamscape provided a new problem: lack of creativity. It was a dreamscape, where literally anything could be possible, but due to struggles to balance out all the other encounters, and a limitation because of sprites, I barely even showed anything in that, so that was a bit of a disappointment.

The original plan for Master of Puppets was always a character-development segment, and while parts of the original idea didn't come through well, the characterization definitely did. Four characters who I feel got some new depth to them were Kaxo (by far), Caiya, Raize, and Kirby. So, let's talk about that, starting from reverse order just because.

Kirby's the one main character I've always had a problem with. Ever since writing The Beginning... back in mid-2011, I started to remove the silly-side from his personality and replace it with a more angry, serious side to him. This was especially evident in Jetting Across The Ice and Tree To Tree, to me. However, as good friend Torkirby pointed out to me, that's not really what any Kirby personality should act like. It's hard to really conceive a completely serious Kirby, so I knew then that I needed to work on him a bit. This was where, unlike with Kaxo's case, the crossover definitely helped his character. The way Gigi wrote my Kirby was honestly a better job than the way I had been writing him in segments prior. While I couldn't exactly have him completely be unserious now that I had given him that character trait, I definitely could tone it down more. Thus, his thinking of Gigi's Kirby at the end of Master of Puppets was used an excuse to get Kirby to act more like, well, how Kirby should act. Originally, I was going to use the excuse that Master Green acted serious but nobody took him seriously, so Kirby had the idea that since he was acting so serious too, he should tone it down before nobody takes him seriously. I'm glad I didn't use it though because it just sounded stupid writing that out.

With Raize, I honestly didn't feel like I did anything new with him, however I had been receiving complaints (looking at you, Jarkers. "Ulti has trouble working with Raize as well, and Raize is his character" indeed.) about how Raize had been used in the comic. Apparently I hadn't been making his personality clear enough, so I tried to do it better during the Battleship scene. Hopefully it worked.

Caiya's little breakdown scene was actually the one good thing I can say that came out of my 10th grade Health class. During one period of Health the day before that comic, the class watched a video about people with multiple personalities, and how some of their lives were. After one scene where a woman had a mental breakdown, all I could think about was Caiya and her split personality disorder thing (I still haven't really settled on what disorder it actually is, since I've said its three different things over the course of Kirby Adventure.) Thus, that comic was born, where Caiya is shown to have an extreme sensitivity to those kinds of condescending comments about her in her dumb side. She felt very vulnerable to me while writing that, and I knew that afterwards I needed to have the reconciliation scenes in the epilogue where Kirby (originally Keito) would reassure her that he doesn't think of her as an spastic idiot just because of an admittedly rather hyperactive personality of hers. Overall, I think that all worked very well.

And now, the doozy. The big one. It's time to talk about Kaxo.
I wish I could say the development I gave to Kaxo during this segment was planned from the very beginning, but in all honesty, it wasn't. I don't exactly remember when I came up with the idea, but it must have been around Jetting Across The Ice or so. The reason I say that is because, in all honesty, Kaxo's characterization in the Kirby's Dream Adventure crossover is almost equally as bad as his characterization in 20 Times Kirby, and yet I never had any qualms about Kaxo back when BSX was writing him, as is evident in my comments back then.

The reason I developed Kaxo's personality with the whole "trying to get them to prove themselves" thing was because I needed Kaxo to not simply be a single-minded bully character. He needed development, otherwise he would simply continue to be a complete jerk and only escalate from there.

The problem with the new personality development, though, was that I couldn't ever find a good place to fit it into. Tree to Tree wouldn't have made sense, since Kaxo was adventuring with Shadik and also hated acknowledging FP, Jetting Across The Ice had him fight against Zykan, Tear In The Fabric had him say 'bwop' and that's about it, and Division Addition didn't feature him. Thus, when the crossover happened, Gigi had no way of knowing Kaxo's underlying development which I had been unable to insert into the comic pages yet.

When Gigi wrote Kaxo as focusing only on bullying, I really only have myself to blame. Yes, the characterization was off, but Gigi really couldn't help that fact. But now that you can see WHY Kaxo does his pushing around of weaker Kirbies, I really hope you can realize why exactly Kaxo wouldn't help Larry tie up Raven as a pinata, cover her with paint, tape her mouth shut, and have the intent of beating her to death with a baseball bat. That line about being upset that Raven wasn't killed was really the nail in the coffin, though. That was clearly not anything Kaxo would do. If that line hadn't been said, I suppose I could've just wrote it off as Kaxo being stressed out or something, but Kaxo would NEVER want to kill another Kirby. Yes, he killed Mirror Kirby's pet in the other crossover, but we have no idea what it looks like. It could've been (and probably was) a giant, evil-looking, monstrous creature that Kaxo perceived as an enemy or a challenge. Raven, though, there's no excuse I could have ever pulled. Thus, that inspired Kaxo's line about how he doesn't kill Kirbies, not even wanting to do so with Talzo.

Working with the background and development was actually really convenient, in a way. A LOT of early stuff such as Kaxo hating Fanhal, Fanhal going to Hali about Kaxo's bullying and getting his promotion, Kaxo and Saia meeting in The True Arena, all of this was entirely coincidental that it worked out so well. I was able to establish that Saia is closer to Kaxo than any of the other Squad members, and gave Kaxo a real reason for hating Fanhal.

Kaxo writing the letter to Raven was an idea that I had mid-Master of Puppets, because it felt like it would be something that Kaxo would do. You can expect to see the arrival of that letter sometime after these crazy time travel shenanigans are done in 20 Times Kirby.

I suppose all that's left to talk about is Master Green, and how that idea came to be.

Originally, the Master of Puppets was some weird OC character called Puppetmaster (hence the title of the segment as well as the earlier sprite sheet name I mentioned, 'Puppetmaster Realms'). The Puppetmaster would basically look a lot like Wiz only slightly thinner and with a feathered cap. At some point, sometime after I used the Jellicents in Saia's encounter, I somehow had Master Green pop into my head. I might have been thinking if any Kirby characters already had 'Master' in their name, and Green showed up first. I tried inserting him in the role, and if I gave him some form of magical control, I honestly saw it working well. The Jellicents would be related to him since they're both jellyfish-like creatures with electrical powers, and Master Green would be a hopeful surprise to the readers. Originally, he would just be dressed in the thin cloak and feathered hat that the original Puppetmaster idea had, but I ended up completely doing away with that idea and just using Master Green in general.

One thing I have to say about the climax of the story, where Not-Kaxo prevents Master Green from escaping, is this: The whole set-up was intended to really showcase the difference between Not-Kaxo and Kaxo. Most likely due to Not-Kaxo's prolonged contact with Master Green, what with him being first and all, Not-Kaxo was a lot more cruel than actual Kaxo was. In my head, I was writing Not-Kaxo the way a lot of readers considered Kaxo: a cruel jerk who only cares about himself. I've seen a lot of comments over time about Kaxo's personality, such as in Tree To Tree ("Wait, KAXO is advocating coordination and teamwork?") and A Different Type Of Comic ("Kaxo wasn't any more violent than ever before. He acted normally, as a matter of a fact, he acted NICER than usual!"). Even in Master of Puppets I got some comments like that ("The more people he kills, the less people left to pick on."). So, I took some of those examples and basically took away from what makes Kaxo act the way he actually does: I took away any sense of compassion or empathy from his clone. This made Not-Kaxo act like a complete jerk, even to Master Green, the one who created him. Thus, the climax I wrote was used to emphasize the difference between what readers thought of Kaxo beforehand (Not-Kaxo) and what Kaxo was actually like (Kaxo). Kaxo does the morally right thing and warns Not-Kaxo and Master Green about the closing portal and the fading world while they're distracted, whereas Not-Kaxo decides to do whatever he wants and prevent Master Green from escaping too. I feel like when I made Kaxo hesitate before warning the pair, he was contemplating doing exactly what Not-Kaxo did (intentionally preventing them from escaping by not saying anything) or doing the right thing. Obviously, he chose the right thing, but the idea was still there. Not-Kaxo simply acted on it, and in the end, he crossed too many lines and is now in prison.

So, yeah. That's Master of Puppets. Funnily enough, despite making a few changes mid-way through, the segment lasted exactly how long I estimated: 60 parts. Right from its very conceptualization, I intended for it to have around 60 parts, and I ended up with exactly that. Go figure.

The big question is, what now? Master of Puppets is done, thus finally completing Chapter 3 of Kirby Adventure. There's a few things that are gonna change now. First off, once the next segment and chapter begin, the archive will be updated to group by Chapter rather than by segment. This will affect the drop-down menu as well, but the segment select buttons on the normal comic pages will still be around to select specific segments. This will simply make Chapter beginning and end more clear for readers, since I've gotten quite a few questions about it, and now that there are going to be 4 chapters to choose from, I feel like that's a good number to make the switch.

As for updates: you may have noticed that I've been updating daily for about a week. However, today was my first day of school, and so I'm going to be a bit too busy with schoolwork and upcoming Let's Plays, so daily updates aren't going to be a thing for now.

However, Kirby Adventure as a whole will be updating less from now on. Instead of around three comics a week that has been going on ever since adopting Gigi's schedule for the crossover, you're gonna get around 1 to 2 comics a week. Why? Well, I'm sure there's gonna be a lot of rejoicing for the reason.

I'm gonna be going back to Yoshi & Kirby again.

I hope to have 2 updates for both Y&K and KA a week, starting this week, and was planning on doing as soon as Master of Puppets, and subsequently Chapter 3, were completed. I'll be continuing Yoshi & Kirby right off from where it's been on technical hiatus since October 2012, and Kirby Adventure will have a bit of a relaxed, calmer segment following, to start off Chapter 4. Hopefully this gets some of you guys to shut up about Y&K updates.

However, if I start to slack off on Yoshi & Kirby now, for once I'll actually encourage those kinds of "you need to update" comments. I don't intend on slacking off, but unless I provide a schoolwork-related reason, then feel free to (politely) make sure to tell me that I should update the comic. This is only after at least one week has passed without an update, though, got it?

Anyways... now that that's all said and done... see you guys next time for the next Kirby Adventure segment.

Actually, one last thing. What did you guys think of this segment? Considering all the flak it got when it first started, I'd like to see overall opinions now that it's finished.

It was a good segment. Also, I can't wait until chapter 4 starts.

Very, very good character development, UY, that's what I thought of this. And since Sprite Comics lack a lot in the artistic end (if you listen to some,) character development is what it needs to fuel the comic.

And it showed me how I did things wrong with certain characters while I was holding on to them for the KDA/KA crossover. And when I make it up to them for their remakes, they are changes I intend to fix now.

Not to mention I also have a certain *something* now for the end of my current dual-segment.

Very well done, UY, very well done indeed.

I mean a WHOLE lot. When I was surfing the web one day, I found this comic. Master of Puppets part 1, to be exact. I read through the archives in a day, and hung around to see the updates. Eventually, I worked up the courage to make an account and actually post something here.

You see what I'm getting at? This comic, this SEGMENT, is the whole reason I'm on SmackJeeves in the first place. Obviously that means something is good about this segment, and your writing in general, or I would have lost interest halfway through Chapter 1 and passed up a chance to get in on all of this shebang.

So yeah, I think this was a great segment. In fact, I think this was an amazing segment, definitely worth waiting six months for the end. Keep it up, Ulti.

And congrats for finally finding time for Yoshi & Kirby. Trust me, you won't regret it.

" I'm gonna be going back to Yoshi & Kirby again."

And with those words, there was dancing in the streets. YESSSSS! :D

As for the segment, I liked it, but I'm not the type to notice flaws in anything except my own stuff and stuff that's really bad.

I personally enjoyed this segment, and all the development.

Kirby did feel like a too serious stick in the mud at times, especially in Tree to Tree (although I probably noticed it more than Jetting Across the Ice since Kiblar was my cameo), and it's good that he's changing.

Raize didn't get too many lines, so I never really knew his personality much, and I do really like it.

Caiya might be my favorite, mostly because she rarely acknowleged the personality thing.

Kaxo worked well, yet I never really noticed his jerkiness in 20 Times Kirby, mostly because I was shocked that Larry would be that harsh.

Green was a character I never expected (mostly because I never played Kirby's Dream Land 2, I dunno why, I have Dream Collection, and it's on there), but I enjoyed it, and his character.

I definitely saw Not-Kaxo as being far more of a jerk than Not-Not-Kaxo (or just Kaxo), and again, I liked that.

Overall, this might be my favorite segment, even better than Escape! or Meet the KAS.

Oh, and I'm REALLY exited for Yoshi & Kirby. REALLY REALLY exited.

Jarkes: Actually, I technically HAVEN'T been around that long. I didn't actually make my existence known until the 21st comic or so.

Jarkes: That line was moreso to semi-explain the oddity of that incident and how it sort of fits into his character now. But I was thinking of you when I put it in, as evidence by my author comment on that page.

...you still need to update the Mokees.

Also, I began to notice Kirby's grouchiness during the Ignus fight (and that he did not apologize after Talzo and his crew retreated.)

I've been reading this comic since somewhere around A Tear in the Fabric, and I have to say that this is my favorite part yet. the character development in Caiya and Kaxo was very well done, and it's nice to see Raize get some more personality to him. I never really understood Caiya's serious side that well, or how she felt about her other personality. I might be wrong, but it doesn't seem like her intelligent side has appeared much. I hope it shows up more often. Though I still won't be able to take her childish side seriously. It was interesting to see Kaxo's true personality, and hear his reasons for being like he is. I never really saw him as a jerk as much as a powerful fighter who sometimes got a little carried away. That would explain why the kirbies he's defeated are still alive.
As for you restarting Yoshi & Kirby, I'll have to check it out soon, as I never really read it.
And as a random note, I can't believe no one mentioned the song "Brother my Brother" during this segment. It fits the whole thing so well! Well, kind of.

Too bad I'm not going to make such a long one.
But at least it explains more how Master of Puppets and its pages came to be.
I enjoyed this last segment of this chapter though…to at least answer the question. =p
